Build Your Website For the User, Not For Search Engines

The conclusion is to build your site for the user, not for search engines. Search engines were created with the user experience in mind – to provide the most relevant search results for any given search query. So if you follow this rule of thumb, you'll be well on the right track!

How does a Search Engine Work?

Search engines perform several activities in order to deliver search results.

Crawling - Process of fetching all the web pages linked to a website. This task is performed by a software called a crawler or a spider (or Googlebot, in case of Google).

Indexing - Process of creating index for all the fetched web pages and keeping them into a giant database from where it can later be retrieved. Essentially, the process of indexing is identifying the words and expressions that best describe the page and assigning the page to particular keywords.

Processing - When a search request comes, the search engine processes it, i.e., it compares the search string in the search request with the indexed pages in the database.

Retrieving Results - The last step in search engine activities is retrieving the best matched results. Basically, it is nothing more than simply displaying them in the browser.

An SEO tactic is considered as White Hat if it has the following features:

It conforms to the search engine's guidelines.

It ensures good quality of the web pages. It ensures availability of useful content on the web pages

White-hat Vs. Black-hat SEO

Black Hat or SpamdexingAn SEO tactic is considered as Black Hat or Spamdexing if it has the following features:

Attempting ranking improvements that are disapproved by the search engines and/or involve deception.

Redirecting users from a page that is built for search engines to one that is more human friendly.

Redirecting users to a page that was different from the page the search engine ranked.

Serving one version of a page to search engine spiders/bots and another version to human visitors. This is called Cloaking SEO tactic.

Using hidden or invisible text or with the page background color, using a tiny font size or hiding them within the HTML code such as "no frame" sections.

Repeating keywords in the metatags, and using keywords that are unrelated to the website content. This is called metatag stuffing.

White-hat Vs. Black-hat SEO

Calculated placement of keywords within a page to raise the keyword count, variety, and density of the page. This is called keyword stuffing.

Creating low-quality web pages that contain very little content but are instead stuffed with very similar keywords and phrases. These pages are called Doorway or Gateway Pages.

Mirror websites by hosting multiple websites – all with conceptually similar content but using different URLs.

Creating a rogue copy of a popular website which shows contents similar to the original to a web crawler, but redirects web surfers to unrelated or malicious websites. This is called page hijacking.

Always stay away from any of the above Black Hat tactics to improve the rank of your site. Search engines are smart enough to identify all the above properties of your site and ultimately you are not going to get anything.

What Is Google Algorithm Updates?

Each year, Google changes its search algorithm around 500–600 times. While most of these changes are minor, Google occasionally rolls out a "major" algorithmic update (such as Google Panda, Google Penguin) that affects search results in significant ways.

What Is The Google Panda Update?Google’s Panda Update is a search filter introduced in February 2011 meant to stop sites with poor quality content from working their way into Google’s top search results. Panda is updated from time-to-time. When this happens, sites previously hit may escape, if they’ve made the right changes. Panda may also catch sites that escaped before.

What Is The Google Penguin Update?Google launched the Penguin Update in April 2012 Google tracks down sites that use ‘Black Hat’ SEO techniques or are just plain Spammy. The kind of things it looks at are paid links, keyword stuffing and anything that contravenes the Google Webmaster Guidelines. In previous updates Google has added any tricks it missed the previous times.

What Is The Hummingbird Update?

Google launched a new “Hummingbird” algorithm in Spt. 2013, claiming that a Google Search can interact with a user in a more “human way” and provide a more direct answer. It name comes from being “precise & fast”

Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query - the whole sentence or the meaning – is taken into account, rather than particular words. The goal is to provide pages matching with the meaning of the search rather than the pages that contain just a few words

Voice search has also been enabled as part of their Chrome browser which allows web surfers to use their computer’s microphone to speak the search query rather than having to type it out.

What Is The Google Mobilegeddon Update?On 21st April 2015, Google released a significant new mobile-friendly ranking algorithm that’s designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results

It’s a page-level change. For instance, if ten of your site’s pages are mobile-friendly, but the rest of your pages aren’t, only the ten mobile-friendly pages can be positively impacted.

This update:

• Affects only search rankings on mobile devices

• Affects search results in all languages globally

• Applies to individual pages, not entire websites

On-Page SEO – Part 1

Your page titles are one of the most important SEO factors on your site. Each of your pages & posts should have its own unique title, which includes the main keywords for that page.

The page title should follow these guidelines:

Be under 70 characters with no more than two long-tail keywords per page title

The primary keyword should appear first

Each keyword phrase should be separated by pipes (|)

Each page title on your website should be unique

Except for your homepage and contact us page, each page title should NOT include your business name

On-Page SEO – Part 2

The meta description appears on a Google search results page under the Page Title. The meta description helps people decide whether to click on your result, or a result above or below you. Think of it as a call to action.

Many people forget to include meta descriptions for their pages. These descriptions are an important place to include relevant keywords for your content, as these are used within the search results when your page is listed.

So How to Write Great Meta Descriptions

Use action-oriented language.

Keep it under 155 characters.

Don’t deceive searchers.

Make it specific and relevant.

Incorporate the primary keyword and at least one secondary keyword

Provide a valuable, compelling reason for why someone should visit the page

On-Page SEO – Part 3

URL StructureIncluding search engine friendly URLs for each of your pages is highly recommended, as these bring better crawling. Shorter URLs seem to perform better in search engine results, however that is not the only factor.

URLs that include targeted keywords, also perform better. The location of these keywords can also be a major influence.

Body Tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, etc.)H1 tags are reserved for your main page title, with subsequent headings (just like the ones I have used throughout this post) beingissued H2, H3, etc. Search engines use these to determine what is important within your content. Wrap Your Title in an H1 Tag

Make sure you write keyword rich headings in the order of priority in H1, H2 and H3 title tags. They are used by many crawlers to differentiate important content.

Keyword DensityIncluding relevant keywords throughout your content is very important, as it helps search engines work out what your content is about. However, try not to excessively repeat and overuse keywords just for search engine robots. This can lead to your site being banned from search engines. To avoid this, try to keep your keyword density to roughly 2-5%.

Anchor LinksWhile linking out to your own pages, you should use keyword rich anchor text as that will help the linking page perform better on Google and other search engines for their targeted anchor texts.

XML SitemapMake sure the site has an XML sitemap created. The easiest way to check for this is to type in www.site.com/sitemap.xml.

This type of sitemap is recommended by all the major search engines (Yahoo and Bing, too) and helps search bots know how many pages your site has.

Optimized MetaTags – Part 1

There are two important metatags:

Meta description tags

Meta keyword tags

Some search engines may display the meta description as a part of the search results, but the meta keyword tags should not appear in search results.

The general consensus among SEO experts is that metatags are dead. Even so, many of these same experts continue to use metatags in their own sites.

For Google, adding the description metatag does not result in a boost in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), but the description might be used for the description for your SERP listings in Google.

Yahoo! says, they use the Keyword Meta Tag when it ranks a page. Hence it makes sense to add one for Yahoo! and any other minor search engines that still use.

There are many different ways to find keywords for your website. Some good keyword ideas are:

The potential words people would use to find your product or service.

The problems that your prospective customers may try to solve with your product or service.

Keyword tags on competitor’s websites.

Visible page copy on competitor’s websites.

Related search suggestions on top search engines.

Using an online tool such as Google Keyword Tool.

By analysing your website carefully and finding out proper keywords. This task can be done by expert SEO copywriters.

Pay attention to stemming for your keywords - particularly to what the root word is and what Google considers to be a match for that word, when optimizing pages over time. You can do brainstorming to identify correct keywords for your site.

What is Word Stemming?

Google uses a feature called word stemming that allows all forms of the word - singular, plural, verb form as well as similar words to be returned for a given search query.

So if someone types in "house plans", not only the pages that are optimized for that phrase but the pages that contain all variations of that phrase are returned. For example, "house plan", "house planning", "house planner".

Planning Your Keywords

Relevancy

Relevance is one of the most important andheavyweight factors that Google uses to determinewhich position a particular page should show on thesearch results for a given keyword search query.

It is also important to put yourself in the minds of yourpotential consumers and anticipate what they mighttype in to search for something on Google.

Use Google Keyword Planner

Let’s go back to our cake decorating tutorial example.If you are a cake decorating tutorial website and planto write an article promoting a cake decorating class,frst do some keyword research using Google’s Keyword Planner to see what search queriespeople are typing into Google.

Key in a short keyphrase to start off i.e. “decorate acake”.

Tip:

If you are just starting out, a good strategy would be to aim to rank for long-tail keywords(3 or more words in a search query) frst. There are two reasons for this:

1. Long-tail keywords are usually more targeted and specifc search queries resulting inhigher conversion rates. i.e. (Buy a cake online).

2. It is more often easier to compete in the SRPs rankings with longer tail keywords.COMPUFIELD

Planning Your Keywords

Google Keyword Planner Data

As we can see, Google’s Keyword Planner gives you acouple of keyword ideas that are related to youroriginal search term and even provides you with themonthly average number of searches for each relatedkeyphrase.

Notice how users type in search queries such as “Howto decorate a cake”?

Build a List of Keywords

The next step is to list these keywords downsomewhere and insert them into your contentwherever appropriate, preferably in the title tags ifyou want to rank for a specifc keyphrase.

Repeat this step as many times as you need untilyou’ve gathered a sizable list of keywords that yourpage can potentially rank for.

Relevancy is Key

Remember, the key here is relevance.

If your article title is “How to Decorate a Cake”, yourcontent should be talking about cake decorating andgiving tips on how to decorate a cake. You want it tosound as natural as possible.

The key is to let it fow naturally as you write, notworrying about when or where to insert the keywords.Then once you’ve fnished writing the article, go backand insert the keywords wherever appropriate.

Tip:You also want make sure that you diversify your target keywords, and you do that by lookingout for synonyms of your targeted keywords. For example, a synonym of “Cake baking classes”can be mentioned as “Cake baking courses“.

Robots.txt

What is a Robots.txt?

Search engines use bots or spiders to crawl the web,and if there are certain pages on your site that you donot want these bots to crawl through, you may use arobots.txt fle to instruct search engines not to crawl aparticular page.

However, only some bots obey the robots.txt fle (i.e.Google Bot and other major search engines), so theremay be spam bots that could still crawl your content.

For this reason, we recommend privatizing orpassword-protecting content that you want to keepconfdential.

How to Create a Robots.txt

To generate a robots.txt, you may create it manually ,or use a robots.txt tool generator. Once yourrobots.txt fle is generated, upload it to your domain’sroot server via cPanel or ftp. If you are unsure, contactyour web hosting provider.

Index and Noindex

Index or Noindex?

When search engines like Google crawl your pages,they will look to see whether you want your pages tobe indexed in their search results or not.

If for some reason you do not want any page in yoursite to show up on the search results, you may add arobots meta tag to an individual page to preventsearch engines from indexing it on the SRPs.

How do You Noindex a Page?

You can add a robots meta tag on any page to tellGoogle not to index any particular page.

Example of a robots meta tag in your page’s <head>section to tell search engines not to index your page:

If you're using Wordpress, you can skip the technicalprocess and easily select noindex from the page editorof any particular page.

However you frst need to install the Wordpress SEO plugin by Yoast.

Rel=”Nofollow”

What is Rel=”Nofollow” Tag Used For?

Whenever you link to another website with an anchortext, you are passing some PageRank to the page youjust linked to.

PageRank will be further explained in the ExternalSEO section of this course.

Basically the more links a webpage gets, the higher thePageRank (measured on a scale of 1 to 100) of thewebpage.

Now there are some instances when you do not wantto pass PageRank to a particular source you link to. Forexample your blog comments section. Blogs are alwaysa target for web spammers trying to put links intocomments.

Google has link policies about linking to unrelated,spammy websites and if you are found linkingextensively to spammy websites, you could getpenalized by Google.

To prevent any link juice from passing on to a spammywebsite, the rel=”nofollow” tag is used.

How to Use the Rel=“Nofollow” Tag?

There are two ways to use the Rel=”Nofollow” attribute.

1. To block all links on a page from passing page rank, the following code is place the in the <head> section:

2. To block a specifc link from passing page rank, the following code is used when creating an anchor text:

What is Canonicalization?

What is canonicalization? “Canonicalization is settingthe preferred version of a set of pages with highlysimilar content.” – as defned by Google.

When you create a site, you have to option to set apreferred domain either:

If you are using WordPress, you can navigate to theSettings => General and set your preferred domain.

You can also setup a Google Webmaster Tools accountand tell Google which is your preferred domain.

Why is Canonicalization Important?

When Google crawls your site and fnds several pageswith similar content, it may only index one version todisplay on the search results.

Extended Site Links On SRPs

Extended Sitelinks on Search Results

If your site navigation is very well structured, searchengines like Google may add sitelinks to your searchresults pages.

Having sitelinks can have a positive effect on the Click-Through Rate (CTR) of your site’s pages, generatingmore visits to your site.

How Do I Get Extended Site Links?

Sitelinks are automatically generated. There are somefactors that Google uses to determine whether asitelink should show or not.

One of the factors is the popularity of the page (howmany visits on a particular page).

If you’d like to remove a sitelink from the searchresults, Google Webmaster Tools allows you to submita request to “demote” the sitelink.

Creating unique, short but descriptive page titlesincrease your chances of any of your pages ranking onthe 1st page of the SRPs.

How to Create a Sitemap

Submit Your Sitemap to Search Engines

To submit your sitemap to Google, create a Google Webmaster Tools account and submit yoursitemap through the admin panel.
