Welcome to the 2019/20 Composites UK MembershipDirectory. 2019 has been another excellent year forComposites UK. We commemorated our 30th birthdayback in June with a celebratory dinner, bringing togetherour current members with those who founded theAssociation in 1989. It was great to see the history ofComposites UK in one room discussing what futureopportunities the industry has and where it will excel.

We introduced new topics to our events schedule, which weresuccessfully received. These included ‘Composites 4.0 -Automation and Digitisation of Composites Manufacturing’ and anew biennial event titled ‘Confidence in Composites’ which aimsto increase the trust in using composite materials througheffective monitoring and repair.

Behind the scenes, we have been involved in the creation ofseveral studies and roadmaps. We facilitated the creation of twonew Good Practice Guides for composites on the topics of Fireand Joining, both of which will be released in the next few months.

With an ever-increasing interest in sustainability, we developed a‘Vision and Roadmap for Sustainable Composites’ and from theresults are developing an action plan. We are working globally tosupport knowledge sharing and collaboration in recycling and lifecycle assessment.

Published in September, we have also put together a roadmapfor the use of composites in construction applications. Theopportunities in this sector are huge, but there are some criticalblockers to overcome. Throughout the year, we havestrengthened our relationships with other organisations, continuing to work with the Health and Safety Executive and

other trade bodies to improve health and safety practices acrossthe manufacturing sector.

Additionally, we are working closely with the British StandardsInstitute (BSI) on key areas such as ensuring appropriatecomposite representation is included on BS technicalcommittees, and identifying gaps in standards that prevent theuptake of composite materials across a variety of sectors toenable BSI to develop a strategic approach to current standardsrevision and new standards development.

During 2019 four new directors were elected to the board and withcurrent opportunities for members and the Association, the strategyfor Composites UK is to be reviewed and updated in-line with theprospects, growth and industry needs. For 2020, we plan to growthe Association to represent a higher proportion of the UKcomposites industry and in the last few months, our operations teamhas increased by 50% to six members of staff, and this will enable usto work more closely with individual member companies to assesstheir requirements and provide improved support and guidance.

We are keen to see the benefits of composites grow into newsectors and applications, and support the UK industry to beworld-leading. For example, we are working with the UK SpaceAgency to develop the UK’s excellent aerospace compositecapability for the growing space sector. We are also in theprocess of reviewing all data on the Hub, updating whereneeded, and mapping the sectors, organisations and activities inthe industry. This will give us an improved picture of the actualsize of the UK composites market, where it currently suppliesinto and where the future opportunities for development lie.

Micro-Measurements®, a Vishay

Precision Group, Inc. (VPG) brand are industry experts in

the design, development, and manufacture of resistive-

foil sensors for high-precision strain and high-stress

measurements.

Strain gauge technology, a key internal component of finished

sensor designs, is a long-recognized industry standard. Strain

gauges change electrical resistance caused by changes of

strain occurring in response to an applied force. In addition to

their reliability, strain gauges are compact and low cost. This

has facilitated their widespread adoption into many of today’s

force, load, position, pressure, tension, weight, strain sensor

designs, experimental stress analysis and materials testing.

Further design

improvements over

traditional strain gauge

types include smaller and

tighter grid-resistance

tolerances, improved

gauge-to-gauge

repeatability, and

enhanced measurement

stability. All enhancements

are implemented via a fully

optimized fabrication

process, incorporating the

very latest in tooling,

methods, and equipment. As a result, the prototype design and

manufacturing of anywhere from a single strain gauge piece up to

OEM volumes may be easily accommodated, with uniform high

quality and competitive lead times.

The Micro-Measurements Advanced Sensors Technology product

portfolio includes linear, shear and circular gauges, arranged as

individual, half-bridge and full-bridge configurations, in ranges from

350Ω to 20kΩ, with added flexibility in mounting options.

CEA-Series strain gauges are used extensively to perform

standard tension and compression tests on polymer matrix

composite for Aerospace, Motorsport, Wind Turbine and many

other applications. The new sensor patterns feature a unique

configuration that is ideal for any strain measurement requiring

close proximity to one-sided features, such as weld joints,

structural discontinuities or stress risers like holes and cracks.

StrainSmart® Data Acquisition Systems can accept signals from

strain gauges or strain-gauge-based transducers, thermocouples

high-level voltage sensors or piezoelectric sensors such as

accelerometers. Strain gauge channels support full-, half-, or

quarter-bridge configurations, and offer built-in precision

completion for 120Ω, 350Ω, and 1000Ω bridges.

System 8000 is intended for

static and dynamic test and

measurement applications. 8-

channel scanners may operate

independently, or up to 16

scanners can be used

concurrently for a maximum of

128 channels. Each channel’s

data is processed in a modern

24-bit digital signal processor,

and filtering is performed using

finite impulse response (FIR),

multi-stage filters. This provides

excellent noise rejection, stability,

and unsurpassed measurement

accuracy. Sampling rates are

1000, 500, 200, 100, and 10

samples/second/channel.

The scanner communicates with

a host PC running over an IEEE-

802.3u 100Base-TX or an IEEE-

802.3 10Base-T Ethernet

network, allowing multiple

scanners to be distributed around large test articles.

2019 sees EXPO-NET celebrate 60 years in manufacturing.

During this time, the business has grown, moved and

evolved. The business originally based in Copenhagen

moved to Jutland in the early seventies. It now employs over

90 people and operates more than 30 extrusion lines; the

business is unrecognizable from our humble beginnings.

The extrusion lines, tertiary equipment and automated

warehousing techniques employ 21st century technology, but the

biggest change is in our motivators and relationships. No longer

do we produce a range of products to supply a range of markets.

Now our influencers are all external. Our customers are the reason

we have evolved into the dynamic, lean organisation we are today.

Our customers need futuristic products offering cost effective,

efficient, environmentally friendly solutions.

Each of our customers has their own objectives, but we all have

the same goals – to develop, to exceed expectations, to

continuously improve and to lead the markets we service. Never

loosing site of the need to protect the environment, working with

integrity and shared values.

So in December the whole organisation will celebrate together and

we will toast the people who have made our business what it is

today – our customers. n

The replacement of metal parts by composite materials in theareas of automotive engineering and aerospace allows for theconstruction of lightweight, energy efficient vehicles, offeringhigh fatigue and corrosion resistance. With growing demandsand increasing part sizes, manufacturers seek to reduce costs, minimize scrap rates and improve their overall productionprocesses while reducing environmental impact and supportingcompliance with VOC regulations.

Chemlease® solutions for high-volumeproduction in the automotive sectorLightweight design is becoming more of a focus in automotiveconstruction; as a result, composites and carbon fiberreinforced plastics (CFRP) have been more commonly used inhigh performance cars in recent years. Specialists that offer acomplete portfolio of dedicated products for the respectiveproduction process can give automotive componentsmanufacturers a boost. As an industry leader, Chem-Trendoffers both solvent- and water-based complete release agentsystems for RTM and press moulding processes, comprised ofmould primers, sealers, internal and external release agents, and ancillary products like mould cleaners. Performanceproducts such as these enable high-volume automotivecomposite manufacturers to keep their moulds in production, generating high-quality parts critical to the long runs needed tomeet demand.

Zyvax® release systems for compositematerials for structural components andinterior trim for aerospace industryChem-Trend supplies release systems for composite materialsthat are used to manufacture components for interior trims aswell as structural components such as vertical fins. Becausethe number of manufactured components made fromcomposite materials is constantly increasing, efficientproduction is becoming more and more important in aircraftconstruction. Zyvax® mould release systems from Chem-Trendare developed specifically to address the molding needs ofpremium aerospace composites materials.

Zyvax® TakeOff™ is a newly developed water-based, semi-permanent release agent (IPS 12-02-002-03) specificallyformulated for aerospace manufacturers and is especiallyeffective for vacuum bagged and autoclave molding of epoxycarbon fiber prepreg. This water-based release agent does notrequire a sealer in most cases when used on high-quality moldsurfaces in aerospace and other epoxy prepreg applications.

A distinct advantage of TakeOff™ is its ability to be applied tomoulds at varying temperatures, thus reducing the requireddowntime to allow the mold to cool, as is sometimes needed

when using solvent-based release agents. TakeOff™ needsonly a minimal number of coats to become effective, with shortdry times between applications. It also provides multiple releasecapability, potentially contributing to improved productivity inthe manufacturing process.

Zyvax® TakeOff™ is ideal for aircraft application because it isspecifically formulated to work on extremely large epoxymoulded parts and uses an environmentally conscious water-based carrier. Additionally, there is very low transfer of therelease agent to the moulded part. That can significantly reduceany cleaning process that might be required prior to a post-molding procedure, such as painting and gluing. This savesmaterial, time and money for manufacturers.

TakeOff™ is virtually solvent-free, exceeds the mostdemanding environmental requirements and providesemployees a more pleasant plant environment.

Chem-Trend continues to gather momentum with aerospace certificateIn 2018, Chem-Trend has been certified by the DQS (GermanCertification Company for Management Systems) inaccordance with EN 9100:2016. In doing so, the company hasfulfilled the strict quality requirements for aeronautics suppliers.

Complying with the highest quality standards has alwaysbeen obligatory in the aeronautical industry. And as aninnovative provider of release systems for composite materials, the company wants to aim high, together with their customers. The certification by DQS confirms that Chem-Trend is fullycompliant with even stricter requirements.

For the EN 9100:2016 certification, the companydemonstrated management processes that adhere to stringentrequirements, such as strengthened process orientation andcomprehensive documentation. The new certificationsupersedes Chem-Trend's previous ISO 9001:2008 certificationand replaces it with the new ISO 9001:2015 certification.

In the development and manufacture of new compositecomponents, consulting with an industry specialist like Chem-Trend for processing aids can help increase productionefficiency, reduce scrap and lower overall costs.n

MSP specialise in world-class part manufacturingsolutions and have over 17 years experience within thecomposite manufacturing industry. Their systems are usedacross the sector to aid the manufacture of various partsincluding Formula 1 chassis, nose cones and front wings, aerospace blades, wings, skins and interior components.

MSP’s products are key for the finishing of composite parts onCNC machine tools. They compensate for distortion, eliminatethe need for complex fixturing, assess a part’s condition ofsupply and perform iterative alignments for optimum accuracy.

MSP’s products have been key for reducing lengthy setup timesfor a leading Formula 1 team. First, NC-Checker analysed themovement of the probe tip to ensure it was correctly calibratedand confirmed in three or five-axis. Errors at this stage could haveaffected how accurately the parts were machined. Following this,NC-PerfectPart measured the part to check its condition ofsupply. If there was too much distortion, or not enough materialto create a ‘good part’, production could be stopped.

The F1 team’s main issue was their part alignment processwhich involved moving the part manually on the machine.MSP’s software automated the probing cycle and used themeasurements to calculate what the part alignment should be.It automatically aligned the machine to the part, eliminating theneed to move the part manually to correct its position. Thisreduced the team’s 10-hour setup time to just 38 minutes andremoved errors due to discrepancy between the part locationand machining program.

The team were also struggling to produce accuratecountersinks. MSP’s automated solution was able to measurethe surface and correct the tool length, allowing the machine tocompensate for the distortion; enabling them to produceperfect countersinks repeatably. n

METROLOGY SOFTWARE PRODUCTS (MSP) n

MSP reduce composite part setup from 10 hours to 38 minutes

MSP understand the detrimental effects of distortionand manual methods in composite part production, especially when tolerances are tight.

MSP’s software automates the process and adjusts part setup forany positional error, form error or surface distortion by measuringthe part on the machine and then automatically compensating for any misalignment.

This provides huge benefits for the composites industry and, in one case, reduced part setup time from 10 hours to just 38 minutes for a leading Formula 1 team.

bigHead® Bonding Fasteners continues its investment in

innovation with the appointment of two more engineers.

Central to bigHead’s strategy is the long-term investment in

engineering expertise and composites knowledge. Having

received an outstanding report earlier this year from Innovate

UK for a KTP with Cranfield University, bigHead has now built a

team dedicated to meeting their customer’s most challenging

problems. “When you have companies like GE or Faurecia

knocking on your door for help with fastening their composites,

I think we might be onto something!”, comments MD Matthew

Stevens. “We believe in investing in UK innovation for the long

term. Great solutions are not created overnight.”

Some of the innovations planned for launch in the next year

include a new range of fasteners with application performance

data, designed to remove a lot of the guesswork in fastener

selection. Another solution is focussed on speeding up and
