EGLS3 Evaluation for Greater Learning Student Survey System At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is necessary to improve teaching and learning. During a designated time, you will be asked to answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to instruction. The anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and division chairs for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the EGLS3 as part of the Houston Community College Student System online near the end of the term.

SCANS and/or Core Curriculum Competencies: If applicable

Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) C1: Allocates Time The cooperative education experience provides the opportunity to have a real world working experience with an employer, who will expect that the student allocate time appropriately to perform the assigned work. There will be many tasks which the student must rank and prioritize, and learn through on the job experience how to accomplish the assigned work within a reasonable allocation of their time. C3: Allocates Material and Facility Resources Students in a cooperative work setting with an employer will be given assets and materials with which to accomplish their assigned tasks. This real life working experience will force the student to use these resources wisely, making the right use of the hosting company’s facilities and provided resources in order to accomplish the assigned work to the expected performance standard of that company. C4: Allocates Human Resources In a cooperative work setting, the student will often be in a working connection with others, who are full time employees of the host company. The student will at times be allocated to various tasks by others, and the student will find opportunities to allocate their own time to various tasks. Because the time is limited in a cooperative relationship, the best use of that time and human resource is a key decision which the student must make and how to accomplish this is a key lesson which must be learned. C11: Serves Clients/Customers In this course, the student will treat the hosting organization as his or her client, giving that client what is asked. As a working member of that organization in every real sense, the student will simultaneously be treating the customers of that company as his or her own customers. In these two ways the student will gain the most realistic appreciation for the client/customer service concerns of that organization, and feel they are a part of that relationship. F16: Self-Management In a cooperative work setting, the student needs to acquire a “self-starting” attitude towards work.

Discrimination Students should be aware that discrimination and/or other harassment based on race, sex, gender identity and gender expression, national origin, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, color or veteran status is prohibited by HCC Policy G.1 Discrimination and Harassment and D.1.1 Equal Educational Opportunities. Any student who feels they have been discriminated against or harassed on the basis of race, sex, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, color or veteran status including sexual harassment, has the opportunity to seek informal or formal resolution of the matter. All complaints/concerns should be directed to the Office of Institutional Equity, 713 718-8271 or [email protected]. Additional information may be obtained online. Visit http://www.hccs.edu/district/departments/institutionalequity/

Complaints involving sexual misconduct to include but not limited to: sexual assault, stalking, dating violence, sexual harassment or domestic violence should be directed to the HCC Title IX Coordinator, Renée Mack at 713 718-8272 or [email protected] ACADEMIC HONESTY Students are expected to complete all materials (exams & exercises) on their own. This does not prevent the student from seeking assistance from the instructor or other students. Copying/Modifying of assignments or cheating on exams will result in dismissal from this course and the student may be expelled from HCCS. Please refer to the current HCCS Student Handbook, Scholastic Dishonesty and Violations for further information. SEXUAL HARASSMENT It is a violation of HCC policy for an employee, agent, or student of the college to engage in sexual harassment as defined in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidelines. Any student who has a complaint concerning this policy has the opportunity to seek resolution of such a complaint in accordance with procedures set forth in the student handbook. Report any complaints immediately to College Administration or call the institution Equity & Compliance Office 713.718.8271 ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES The State of Texas imposes penalties on students who drop courses excessively. Students are limited to no more than SIX total course withdrawals throughout their educational career at a Texas public college or university. To help students avoid having to drop/withdraw from any class, HCC has instituted an Early Alert process by which your professor will “alert” you and Distance Education (DE) counselors that you might fail a class because of excessive absences and/or poor academic performance. Contact your DE professor regarding your academic performance or a DE counselor to learn about helpful HCC resources (e.g. online tutoring, child care, financial aid, job placement, etc.). In order to withdraw from your DE class, you MUST first contact your DE professor, PRIOR to the withdrawal deadline to receive a “W” on your transcript. After the withdrawal deadline has passed, you will receive the grade that you would have earned. Zeros averaged in for required coursework not submitted will lower your semester average significantly, most likely resulting in a failing grade of an “F”. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the class; however, your professor reserves the right to withdraw you without your request due to excessive absences. If you do not feel comfortable contacting your professor to withdraw, you may contact a DE counselor. However, please do not contact both a DE counselor and your DE professor to request a withdrawal; either one is sufficient. The final withdrawal deadline should be listed in your syllabus (or can be found on the distance education website under the Academic Calendar link in the Current Student area). Classes of other duration (mini-term, flex-entry, 8-weeks, etc.) may have different final withdrawal deadlines. Please review HCC’s online “Academic Calendar by Term” or contact HCC Registrar’s Office at 713.718.8500 to determine mini-term class withdrawal deadlines. If the student is unable to complete the course, official withdrawal is required by the drop date as indicated on the calendar contained in the syllabus. Withdrawing from the course is a formal procedure, which YOU, the student, MUST initiate; the Instructor should not do it.
