with the society and to conquer tomorrow's technology at global level with
human values through our dedicated team."
- VISION OF VELAMMAL.
ABOUT VEC-CSI-SC:
Computer Society of India is the first and the largest body of computer
professionals in India. Formed in 1965, the CSI has been instrumental in
guiding the Indian IT industry down the right path since its formative years.
The Computer Society of India, student chapter of VEC organizes activities like
workshops, seminars, conferences and technical talks every year for the benefit
of students. It also conducts various events which include Technical Quiz, Mind
Boggling, Idea Contest, Essay Writing etc.
MESSAGE FROM HOD :
Giving technical knowledge, a different dimension has always been one
of the greatest urge of our team. As the Head of the Department, it’s been my
proud privilege to extend support in any way I could do to my team of dedicated
staffs and students in accomplishing the same by taking one such effort. I am
immensely proud in making this issue with regards to our VEC-CSI-SC.
The progress that the newsletter has shown in the course of these years
is proving how students of the CSE Department are becoming tech-savvy. At
this juncture, I take opportunity in congratulating them for coming up with
such an endeavor, demonstrating performances and leadership.

MiUI - A different Android experience
When iOS, Android, Windows swarm over the globe infesting every techie‟s mind, Xiaomi
Tech introduced a new user interface called MiUI (pronounced "Me You I", a play on the
common abbreviation of the words „user interface‟ as UI) for mobiles. Basically, MiUI is a
Chinese customized version of the Android OS, built from stock with additional goodies taken
from manufacturer modifications like Samsung‟s TouchWiz launcher, iPhone‟s looks and the
full potential of Android 2.2 platform (higher versions also supported- MiUI 6 is for Android
4.4.4.x, released on 12 September, 2014).
The MiUI ROM was initially developed only for Chinese
users, based on Android 2.2.x Froyo and CyanogenMod 6
sources and totally localized with Chinese locale and
language. Xiaomi added a number of apps to enhance the
basic framework; those include Notes, Backup, Music, and
Gallery. The group behind the ROM had no intention of
bringing it to other devices at the beginning, but as of now,
several ports have surfaced for various other devices and
with translations. MiUI does not dispatch with Google Play
Services in its current version in China, although, Xiaomi
has been expanding its operations outside China. MiUI releases for Xiaomi devices sold in
countries outside of China such as India, Singapore and Indonesia have Google Play Services
and Google Apps such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Play Store pre-installed and functions
as it would on any other Android device. MiUI editions for these countries are Google
certified.
According to MiUI India, MiUI offers:
Heavy Customization
MiUI is the most customizable Android ROM with thousands of themes
and millions of combinations meaning that your device has a unique look
and feel.
Constant Updates
MiUI updates every week new features, fixes and optimizations every time.
MiUI's updates evolve with user feedback
Advanced Security
MiUI has advanced security features allowing you to use your device with a
peace of mind. MiUI also includes preloaded anti-virus and anti-spam
features.
But what do users say?
3
Supporting arguments:
The biggest advantage that one gets is speed. Just like the CyanogenMod, it is based on an
AOSP build of Froyo and hence brings unparalleled speed utilizing the hardware to its fullest.
Then, one gets the customizations. It borrows heavily from the iOS platform, like having
no app drawer at all, but at the same time it offers customizations like themes, effects etc. that
iPhone users can only dream of. It also allows one to change the look of almost any aspect of
the interface, ranging from the order of home screens to icons in the dock.
The MiUI ROM developers also brought in some of their own applications, most notably,
the FM app and the MiUI music player, which work better than any other offering (including
the stock ones). They look attractive, are more user friendly, and use less memory.
MiUI ROM also features dedicated call and message icons on the lock-screen, which can
take one to these applications without having to unlock the handset. Their lock-screen
customizations also surpass any other Android build, and in fact, Samsung with their Galaxy S
variants seems to have taken a leaf out of their book, offering
four different lock-screen settings that other manufacturers
have yet to catch up to.
As for the original ROM, weekly updates are released
over-the-air (OTA) that bring the newest enhancements, bug
fixes and other goodies to users running the ROM.
Opposing arguments:
$ Most of the ROM is in Chinese, and while ports
to other devices and locales have been done, part of the
ROM remains in Chinese yet.
$ Many users pointed out faster battery drains. This is
due to the heavy customizations that have been done to the user interface, but the reviews are
mixed in this regard. It‟s found out that, users who do not flash the MiUI ROM with fully
charged battery, or those who do not calibrate their phone‟s battery afterwards, face the battery
problem more than those that follow otherwise.
$ Since many Android fans are not highly comfortable with iPhones, the similarities in
appearance of the two may be a huge turn off for them. Many users complained that it is too
much „iPhone-alike‟.
Bottom-line:
The MiUI project brings a new dimension to the power of the already-brilliant Android
platform. Despite its minor shortcomings, it works wonders and brings out the true potential of
the Android devices.

Penetration testing, popularly known as pen-testing is a network
security assessment technique. Pen testing is a methodological approach that
encompasses security audit and vulnerability assessment (other assessment
techniques) and demonstrates if the vulnerabilities in the system can be
successfully exploited by attackers.
A pen test simulates methods that intruders use to gain unauthorized
access to an organizations network systems and then compromise them. It
reveals the potential consequences of a real attacker breaking into the
network. A penetration tester is differentiated from an attacker only by his
intent and lack of malice.
Types:
External testing:
Internal testing:
It involves testing computers and devices within the
company.
Black box pen test:
This stimulates the process of real hacker. No information
will be given. It is time consuming and expensive.
Grey box pen test:
White box pen test:
PEN-TESTING
It involves analysis publicly available information and
company’s externally visible devices such as web servers,
firewalls, mail servers, routers. It is to demonstrate the
existence of known vulnerabilities that could be exploited by
an external attacker. This type of testing is also done in
distributed web servers.
The tester is given a limited information about the
organization and then the testing is done.
Pen test done with the complete knowledge of the
infrastructure , network design , firewalls etc.
5
Announced test:
It is an attempt to compromise the system with the cooperation
and knowledge of IT personnel and the management.
Unannounced test:
It is an attempt to compromise the system without the
knowledge of IT security personnel but with prior permission
from the management.
Specialized OS distributions :
There are several operating system distributions, which are geared towards
performing penetration testing. Distributions typically contains pre-packaged and
pre-configured set of tools. This is useful because the penetration tester does not
have to hunt down a tool when it is required. This may in turn lead to further
complications such as compile errors, dependencies issues, configuration errors, or
simply acquiring additional tools may not be practical in the tester's context.
Popular examples are Kali Linux (replacing BackTrack as of December
2012) based on Debian Linux, Pentoo based on Gentoo Linux and WHAX based on
Slackware Linux. There are many other specialized operating systems
for penetration testing, each more or less dedicated to a specific field of
penetration testing.
