Apostolic Exhortation Marialis Cultus (Paul VI, 1974)

47. There has also been felt with greater urgency the need to point out once more the importance of a further essential element in the Rosary, in addition to the value of the elements of praise and petition, namely the element of contemplation. Without this the Rosary is a body without a soul, and its recitation is in danger of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas and of going counter to the warning of Christ: "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words" (Mt. 6:7). By its nature the recitation of the Rosary calls for a quiet rhythm and a lingering pace, helping the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord's life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord. In this way the unfathomable riches of these mysteries are unfolded.

46. As a Gospel prayer, centered on the mystery of the redemptive Incarnation, the Rosary is therefore a prayer with a clearly Christological orientation. Its most characteristic element, in fact, the litany-like succession of Hail Mary's, becomes in itself an unceasing praise of Christ, who is the ultimate object both of the angel's announcement and of the greeting of the mother of John the Baptist: "Blessed is the fruit of your womb" (Lk. 1:42). We would go further and say that the succession of Hail Mary's constitutes the warp on which is woven the contemplation of the mysteries. The Jesus that each Hail Mary recalls is the same Jesus whom the succession of the mysteries proposes to us-now as the Son of God, now as the Son of the Virgin-at His birth in a stable at Bethlehem, at His presentation by His Mother in the Temple, as a youth full of zeal for His Father's affairs, as the Redeemer in agony in the garden, scourged and crowned with thorns, carrying the cross and dying on Calvary, risen from the dead and ascended to the glory of the Father to send forth the gift of the Spirit…

We emphasize two features identified by

Paul IV:

1.The Rosary is a COMTEMPLATIVE PRAYER

2.The Rosary is CRISTOCENTRIC

How will we pray it?

1. Read the text from Sacred Scripture.

2. The projection of an image, a painting, that can help foster one’s vision in the contemplation of the mystery.

3. A moment of silent contemplation.

4. Our Father… (recited together).

5. “Shared Decade”.

6. Glory be. (recited together)

A “Shared Decade”?

An attempt to mutually assist each other to enter into:

- Contemplation - Praise - Supplication (petition) The brothers are invited to share: - Their reflections - Their prayers of praise - Their petitions

Page 7: COMTEMPLATIVE ROSARY IN COMMUNITY - Marianist · redemptive Incarnation, the Rosary is therefore a prayer with a clearly Christological orientation. Its most characteristic element,

A “Shared Decade”? • When a brother shares his reflection or his

praise, he concludes by reciting the 1st part of the Hail Mary. The rest of the assembly joins in at the last word with an emphatic: “JESUS.”

• When a brother shares his petition, the assembly responds with the 2nd half of the Hail Mary: HOLY MARY…

• To conclude the decade, when indicated by the presider, the assembly proclaims: GLORY BE TO THE FATHER…

1st Mystery: The Annunciation The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are

highly favored! The Lord is with you." Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus… "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God… For nothing is impossible with God."

"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be done to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.

2nd Mystery: The Visitation

Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah's home and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!“

3rd Mystery: The Nativity Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in

Judah, David's town… He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel.

There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood… Suddenly, God's angel stood among them and God's glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, "Don't be afraid. I'm here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David's town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you're to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger."

At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises: “Glory to God in the heavenly heights, peace to all men and women on earth who please him.”

4th Mystery: The Presentation

Then when the days stipulated by Moses for purification were complete, they took him up to Jerusalem to offer him to God as commanded in God's Law: "Every male who opens the womb shall be a holy offering to God," and also to sacrifice the "pair of doves or two young pigeons" prescribed in God's Law.

In Jerusalem at the time, there was a man, Simeon by name, a good man, a man who lived in the prayerful expectancy of help for Israel. And the Holy Spirit was on him… Simeon took him into his arms and blessed God: God, you can now release your servant in peace as you promised. With my own eyes I've seen your salvation…

5th Mystery: The Finding of Child Jesus in the Temple

The next day they found him in the Temple seated among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. The teachers were all quite taken with him, impressed with the sharpness of his answers. But his parents were not impressed; they were upset and hurt.

His mother said, "Young man, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been half out of our minds looking for you."

He said, "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I had to be here, dealing with the things of my Father?" But they had no idea what he was talking about.
