E n nombre de CONCACAF, me complace darle la bienvenida a la decimotercera edición de Copa Oro y a los 12 países participantes, al campeonato premier de la Confederación para selecciones nacionales. Este

año, el torneo brinda la mejor oportunidad para reunir a la fami-lia del fútbol y celebrar este especial evento en la región.Desde el origen de la competencia en 1991, la Copa Oro ha sido proclamada como un evento de primera clase, que atrae el interés y el apoyo de aficionados de todo el mundo. En 2013, el torneo contó con la asistencia de más de 500,000 aficionados y registró números record en audiencias de televisión. Solamen-te en EE. UU., más de 36 millones de televidentes siguieron los partidos a través de los canales de nuestros socios de televisión. Congregando a jugadores elite de 12 países de CONCACAF, la competencia bienal de 2015 promete continuar siendo la más competitiva. Por primera vez desde la edición de 2003, el torneo presentará un partido por el tercer puesto, que se jugará el sábado 25 de julio en el PPL Park, convirtiendo el fin de semana de finales de la Copa Oro en Filadelfia en una celebración del deporte.Un día después, la Final se jugará en la ciudad de Filadelfia en el estadio Lincoln Financial Field. El partido determinará el equi-po que representará a CONCACAF en la próxima Copa FIFA Confederaciones 2017. Si el campeón de la Copa Oro 2013, EE. UU., gana la edición de 2015, esta selección será la representan-te. De lo contrario, el ganador de la Copa Oro 2015 jugará un partido eliminatorio con los estadounidenses para determinar al representante de CONCACAF.La Copa Oro permite a CONCACAF apoyar al fútbol a tra-vés de la región, brindando recursos significativos para pro-gramas de desarrollo que asisten a las Asociaciones Miembro en el crecimiento del juego. Asimismo, mediante iniciativas como Celebra la Diversidad y alianzas sólidas, la Confede-ración aprovecha el poder del juego para promover un am-biente de integración, cooperación y cambio social. portunity to unite the football family and celebrate the sport in our region.Since the first edition in 1991, the Gold Cup has grown into a first-class event, earning support and interest from millions of fans across the globe. Two years ago, it drew more than 500,000 fans to the stadiums and gener-ated record numbers of television viewers. In the United States alone, in excess of 36 million people watched the matches on the networks of our broadcast partners.Gathering elite players from 12 CONCACAF countries, the 2015 version of the biennial tournament promises to be the most competitive ever. For the first time since 2003, the Gold Cup will feature a third-place match, to be played on July 25 at PPL Park, making the finals weekend in Philadelphia a true cele-bration of the sport. A day later, the Final will be contested at Lincoln Finan-cial Field. If the 2013 champion United States repeats, it will represent CONCACAF in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. If not, the 2015 winner will meet the Americans in a playoff for the valued berth.The Gold Cup allows CONCACAF to support football throughout the region, providing significant resourc-es for development activities that assist our Mem-ber Associations in growing the game. In addition, through programs such as Embrace Diversity, the Confederation harnesses the power of football to fos-ter an environment of integration, collaboration and positive social change.CONCACAF is grateful for the support of all Mem-ber Associations, officials, coaches, players, partners, sponsors, media and fans. La CONCACAF trabaja junto con Naciones Unidas en el marco de la campaña “Protege la meta”, un programa que pretende generar conciencia acerca del virus del VIH y su prevención, especialmente con los jóvenes. Desde 2013, cuando la Confederación y ONUSIDA firmaron el acuerdo para vincular el fútbol con la respuesta a la enfermedad, todas las competencias organizadas por la CONCACAF incluyen actividades de promoción y difusión de la campaña.Las 41 Asociaciones que forman parte de la Confederación trabajan para incrementar la educación sobre el VIH, con el objetivo de asegurar que los jóvenes tengan acceso a servicios médicos, medicación adecuada, tratamiento y asesoramiento.

La Confederación continúa apostando fuertemente en su campaña “Celebra la Diversidad”, una iniciativa lanzada en julio de 2013 que tiene como objetivo pro-mover la integración dentro de la comunidad del fútbol mediante los valores de igualdad, respeto e inclusión a través del deporte.La iniciativa incluye actividades educativas, así como tareas de prevención y monitoreo de cualquier incidente o acto discriminatorio. En ese sentido, este año la CONCACAF lanzó su primer Manual de Diversidad, una guía que ofrece herramientas concretas para ampliar los conceptos de aceptación e inclusión tanto dentro de la cancha como fuera de ella.

Celebrando la DiversidadEmbrace Diversity is a regional initiative created by CONCACAF in 2013 to provide a strong, well-recognized, effective and influential voice for the promotion of integration within the football community and society. The campaign addresses discrimination concerns through educational/awareness activities, coalition campaigns, prevention and monitoring, as well as regulation that can facilitate the referral of discrimi-natory incidents within football. CONCACAF embraces and promotes diversity as a key value of football and life. By fostering a culture of respect and inclusiveness, a commitment to fair play comple-ments the pursuit of excellence on-and-off the field.

In April 2013, CONCACAF and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) agreed to collaborate, engaging football in the AIDS response, particularly among young people. The partnership is an unprecedented commitment to carry out joint advocacy and communications activities in regional competitions organized by CONCACAF. In order to support the UNAIDS “Protect the Goal” campaign, banners are positioned in highly-visible areas of a venue and a pledge is read over the public address system by the captain of each participating team before designated games throughout a CONCACAF tournament.

La Copa Oro de la CONCACAF se celebra cada dos años y es el principal evento de la Confederación para las selec-ciones nacionales de la región. Aunque inicialmente incluía

solo ocho equipos, hoy se ha convertido en una competencia en la que participan 12 países. El torneo ha alcanzado niveles excepcionales de popularidad, movilizando multitudes hacia los estadios y atrayendo a millones de televidentes que siguen los partidos desde distintas partes del mundo.Estados Unidos se coronó campeón de la primera edición del torneo en 1991. En esa ocasión, el equipo estadouni-dense, después de haber empatado sin goles, derrotó 4 a 3 a Honduras en los penales. El primer campeonato de Copa Oro tuvo lugar en solo dos estadios: el Memorial Coliseum de Los Ángeles y el Rose Bowl de Pasadena.A partir de ese año, edición tras edición, el torneo ha crecido exponencialmente. Del 7 al 26 de julio, Atlanta, Baltimore, Bos-ton, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Án-geles, Nueva York, Filadelfia, Phoenix y Toronto darán la bien-venida a la Copa Oro 2015, que por primera vez se organizará conjuntamente entre Estados Unidos y Canadá.El estadio Lincoln Financial Field, en Filadelfia, será el escena-rio de la final, que se jugará el domingo 26 de julio. El partido por el tercer puesto se disputará el sábado en el PPL Park, en la misma ciudad.

Since 1991, the CONCACAF Gold Cup has been the confederation’s premier event for men’s national teams, crowning a champion every two years.

Growing from an eight- to a 12-team competition, Gold Cup participants come from each of CONCACAF’s three sub-re-gions: North America (3 automatic entrants), Central Amer-ica (4.5 qualifiers through the Central American Cup) and the Caribbean (4.5 qualifiers through the Caribbean Cup). Contested on 12 previous occasions, Mexico owns a tour-nament-record six titles, followed by the United States with five and Canada with one.The U.S. captured the inaugural championship, outlast-ing Honduras on penalty kicks in the final, 4-3, after a scoreless draw. That year, the entire tournament was held in two Southern California venues - the Los Angeles Me-morial Coliseum and the Rose Bowl.Highlighting the Gold Cup’s spectacular evolution, more than 1,000,000 fans have combined to attend the last two edi-tions, each played in state-of-the-art stadiums across the U. S.The current champion U.S. possesses half a ticket to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and will face the 2015 winner in a single-game playoff for the right to represent CONCA-CAF in Russia. If the Americans lift the trophy once again, they will earn direct qualification.

The Confederation of North, Central America and Ca-ribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) is the gov-erning body of football in the region and one of six

continental authorities that administer the sport globally along with FIFA. Based in Miami, Florida, USA, CONCACAF is composed of 41 Member Associations, an Executive Com-mittee and a General Secretariat, all supported by multiple committees. Once every two years, the CONCACAF Gold Cup is contested by the region’s best national teams. Since the tournament was inaugurated in 1991, the field has expanded from eight to 12 sides and the format has undergone multiple modifications all with the expressed objective of crowning a champion. While Canada, Mexico and the United States gain automatic North American entry, representatives from Central Amer-ica and the Caribbean are determined through qualifying competitions and a newly-introduced two-legged playoff.For the first time, the Central American Football Union (UN-CAF) decided to play its Central American Cup in the United States. Each of UNCAF’s seven members traveled north for the competition, which was played September 3-13, 2014, in four cities. Following up on its outstanding performances in the FIFA World Cup just months earlier, Costa Rica defeated Gua-temala in the final, 2-1, for a record-extending eighth title. A crowd in excess of 41,000 was on hand at the Los Angeles Me-morial Coliseum to watch the Ticos rally from a first-half defi-cit as Bryan Ruiz and Juan Bustos struck for the deciding goals.

Guatemala earned a return to the Gold Cup after missing out in 2013. Midfielder Marco Pappa helped the Chapines to a per-fect 3-0-0 record in the group stage, netting braces in games against El Salvador and Honduras. The Seattle Sounders star took home Golden Boot and Golden Ball honors. Third-place Panama booked a ticket to a sixth straight Gold Cup, while fourth-place El Salvador progressed for the ninth time overall.Jamaica may not have qualified for the 2013 Gold Cup, but any lingering feelings of disappointment were put to rest thanks to a run to the 2014 Caribbean Cup crown at home. The Reggae Boyz reclaimed their place at the regional sum-mit by overcoming rival Trinidad & Tobago on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw in the final. The Trinidadians qualified for a second consecutive Gold Cup. Haiti may have edged Cuba in the match for third place, but both ad-vanced to CONCACAF’s biggest stage as well.After finishing fifth at the Central American Cup, Honduras was handed a Gold Cup lifeline in the form of a two-legged playoff with French Guiana, the fifth-place team from the Caribbean Cup. Despite being heavily favored, Honduras –a 2014 FIFA World Cup participant– was on the ropes following a 3-1 away-leg defeat. However, the Catrachos managed to ral-ly in front of their home faithful at the Estadio Olimpico in San Pedro Sula, just edging out their classy Caribbean opposi-tion, 3-0, to secure their place at the 2015 Gold Cup.

In May 2014, the Salvadoran Football Federation (FES-FUT) officially presented Albert Roca as the new head coach of its men’s national team. While quali-fication for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is the main priority, he was also tasked with improving the nation’s on-field infrastructure, including player

development and coaching standards.A proud Catalan, Roca’s most notable coaching achieve-ments prior to signing on with El Salvador came during his five-year tenure as an assistant at FC Barcelona, where between 2003 and 2008, he was an instrumental part of the team’s success, working alongside world-class talents like Ronaldinho, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, and Lionel Messi under then-head coach Frank Rijkaard. Roca continued as an assistant with the Dutch legend during stops in Turkey with Galatasary and the Saudi Arabia national team.In an interview with CONCACAF Gold Cup Program, the 52-year-old Roca spoke candidly about his work with El Sal-vador and what it would take to achieve Gold Cup success:

-After taking the job as national team manager, what was your first objective in order to improve the team’s overall level? ¿Qué nivel encontró? ¿Hacia dónde encaró su trabajo con los jugadores salvadoreños?- We started to introduce the players to the same methodology that we had always applied at Barcelona. It’s important to me that our players understand football and the perspective that can be gained by playing with great intensity. It is not easy to apply the tactical concepts we’re trying to instill. It takes a lot of effort to pressure your opponents high up the field, keep close lines and buy into what the coach is trying to teach. It’s a difficult task, but an important one.-Empezamos a introducir a los jugadores en la metodología que siempre hemos utilizado para entender el fútbol en el Barcelona, desde la perspectiva de una intensidad superior. No es fácil aplicar los conceptos de presión alta, de líneas juntas, de buscar a nivel táctico sacar partido, porque durante la formación de estos jugadores quizás no se han desarrollado como uno quisiera.

-How would you describe your first months on the job? ¿Cómo fueron estos meses de trabajo?- First, I had to focus on understanding what type of players I could work with. I had to look for the ones playing abroad and carry out a weekly follow-up of the ones playing domestically. It is really important that we have the right blend of domestic-based and international players in our pool. The more high-level players we have at our disposal, the better we can be as a team.-Tuve que centrarme en qué tipo de jugador podía realmente aprovechar, buscar a los legionarios que estuvieran fuera del país y hacer un seguimiento cada semana a los que compiten en la liga local, para hacer una buena mezcla entre ellos. Un jugador bueno hace mejor a otro compañero.

-Having been drawn into a group featuring Costa Rica, Jamaica and Canada, what do you make of your Group B opponents? ¿Qué opinión le merecen los adversarios del Grupo B?- We prefer to focus on ourselves more so than our opponents, but I can tell you that we’ll be playing with very complicated and formidable rivals. In the 2009 edition, we were in the same group and, after defeating eventual semifinalists Costa Rica, we then lost back-to-back games against Canada and Jamaica. So, in that sense, perhaps history is against us. But history is meant to be changed and now the circumstances are much different for us. We have a young squad that I believe is ready to compete with everybody.-Tenemos una media que apenas superamos los 24 años y nos falta experiencia. Estaremos jugando contra rivales muy complicados, temibles, con los que la historia no nos juega a favor. En la edición 2009 se dio el mismo grupo y, tras vencer a Costa Rica, Canadá y Jamaica acabaron eliminando a El Salvador. Habrá que tenerlos muy en cuenta, pero la historia está para cambiarla. Son circunstancias muy variables, equipos diferentes, nosotros tenemos un equipo joven con el que vamos a competir a todos.

Dirigidos por el colombiano Jor-ge Luis Pinto, los Catrachos saben que deben mejorar si quieren hacer un buen papel en el máximo torneo de la CONCACAF, donde comparten grupo con Estados Uni-dos y Panamá, nada menos que campeón y subcampeón de la edición 2013.“No tenemos que temerle a nadie”, asegura Pinto, quien en marzo de este año sumó a su cuerpo técnico al costa-rricense Germán Retana para que trabaje con los jugado-res en el aspecto motivacional.

A fifth-place finish in the 2014 Central American Cup was not what Honduras had envisioned just months after playing in the FIFA World Cup. That positioning, though, did not eliminate it from an

opportunity to participate in a 12th CONCACAF Gold Cup. It was, in fact, a lifeline that led to a qualifying playoff against French Guiana. After falling 3-1 in the first leg on the road, the Catrachos stormed back for a 3-0 win at home, ensuring their return to the confederation’s premier competition. The lessons learned from that experience led head coach Jorge Luis Pinto to say: “We don´t have to fear anyone.” With a crop of young stars such as Andy Najar, Antony Lozano and Bryan Rochez emerging, Honduran oppo-nents should proceed with caution.

A lot of good things have happened over the course of Panama’s last 11 Gold Cup games. It has lost only twice, beat Mexico on a pair of occasions and con-ceded one goal or fewer 10 times. Those facts would

seem to indicate that a tournament title may have been won along the way. That assumption would be mistaken for one reason. Both of the Canaleros’ losses came at the hands of the United States in two different Gold Cups. The Americans de-feated Panama in the 2011 semifinals and 2013 final. For more than 10 years, the forward has been a CONCACAF star. Since his international debut in 2005, Ruiz has contributed mightily to Costa Rica’s successes. His crowning achievement came at last year’s World Cup, scoring against Italy and Greece as the Ticos made a quarter-final run. Ruiz, 29, won the 2004 CONCACAF Champions Cup with Alajuelense, before mov-ing to Europe, where he’s played with Gent, FC Twente, PSV Eindhoven and Fulham.

Jamaica’s captain has been a key member of three Caribbean Cup-winning squads, lifting the trophy in 2008, 2010 and 2014. Last year, he won MVP honors as the Reggae Boyz went un-defeated over the course of four finals’ games in seven days. Austin, 30, has carved out a pro-ductive career for himself in Europe, playing for Norway’s Brann (2008-12) and Leeds United in England (2012-15). He has appeared in two Europa League matches and is still looking for his first-ever Gold Cup goal.

En la última edición del torneo, los mexicanos cayeron en semifinales ante Panamá, un duro golpe que Miguel Piojo Herrera buscará recomponer.El entrenador tomó la decisión de armar dos selecciones diferentes para afrontar la Copa América (del 11 de junio al 4 de julio en Chile) y la Copa Oro, y confirmó que le dará prioridad a la competencia de la CONCACAF, que además podría permitirles jugar la próxima Copa Con-federaciones. Para lograr esto último, deberán quedarse con el título y luego vencer a Estados Unidos en un par-tido desempate.

de Stephen Hart, exdirector técnico de Canadá, el Selec-cionado triniteño viene de conseguir el subcampeonato en la Copa del Caribe tras caer por penales en una disputada final ante Jamaica.Consolidado como el equipo caribeño mejor ubicado en el ranking de la FIFA, los Soca Warriors aspiran a meterse en los cuartos de final en esta Copa Oro, donde comparten grupo con México, Cuba y Guatemala. CONCACAF. The offensive-minded Martinez is a difference maker for a Cuban side that will rely on his skill and guile in the Gold Cup. Two years ago, he made his presence felt in East Hartford, Connecticut, scoring three goals and leading Cuba to a memorable 4-0 win over Belize. The 28-year-old’s talents were in full bloom during the 2014 Caribbean Cup. Though the Cubans were unable to defend their regional title, Mar-tinez aided the effort by netting against French Guiana and Haiti in the finals.

T ras el duro golpe que significó quedar afuera de la Copa Oro 2013, Guatemala inició un nuevo ca-mino. De la mano del entrenador argentino Iván Franco Sopegno, que asumió su cargo en mayo de

2014, los Chapines mejoraron notablemente y sorpren-dieron a todos con el logro del subcampeonato en la últi-ma Copa Centroamericana, luego de caer ajustadamente (2-1) frente a la favorita Costa Rica. Con un equipo conformado por una gran mayoría de jugado-res que actúan en el ámbito local, Sopegno prefiere la cautela. “Otras selecciones están muy potenciadas. En el fútbol hoy en día se trabaja la velocidad y la potencia. Like his beloved Guatemala, Carlos Ruiz is back. The forward initially closed the curtain on his international career following a 3-1 loss to the United States in a World Cup qual-ifier on October 16, 2012. Slightly less than two years later, he agreed to return and help the Chapines qualify for the Gold Cup.The 35-year-old is Guatemala’s leader in ap-pearances (112 caps) and tops its scoring table (57 goals). He has steered Municipal to two straight runner-up finishes in Guatemala and was the joint-top scorer in the 2014 Aper-tura with 12 goals.

Considered the tournament’s Cinderella story, it was widely assumed that Costa Rica would be content with hav-ing already advanced out a group that featured three for-mer world champions in England, Italy and Uruguay.The Ticos had shown themselves anything but satisfied. Highlighting their efforts was the ethereal play of goalkeep-er Keylor Navas, who had been tremendous throughout the tournament and his performance against the high-pow-ered Dutch was again exquisite.It was then, with a bit of cruel irony, that Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal would make the game’s deciding tactical de-cision: replacing his first-choice goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen with Tim Krul in the waning moments of extra time, giving the Netherlands a six-foot-five presence in goal for the de-ciding penalty shootout. Krul was fabulous and the Dutch penalty-takers clinical. Costa Rica’s journey was soon over, but the Ticos held their heads high as they walked off the field at the Arena Fonte Nova.

THE NEXT STEPIt is well known in soccer that national teams operate in cycles, and the same goes for managers. After the Ticos unprecedented success in Brazil, La Sele fans everywhere soon said goodbye to the coach who had become a nation-al hero, Jorge Luis Pinto. There was no doubt that the Colombian had aroused the team’s full potential and that the list of qualified candi-dates to replace him was lengthy. Ultimately, though, the man chosen to take the reins was none other than a former national team legend and an assistant under Pinto, Paulo Cesar Wanchope. 38-year-old — who scored 43 goals in 75 appearances for Costa Rica — hit the managerial ground running by winning the 2014 Central American Cup title and qualifying for the 2015 Gold Cup. The Ticos’ record-ex-tending eighth regional crown furthered bolstered its sta-tus as one of the international game’s up-and-coming contenders. In this post-World Cup era of elevated ex-pectations, Costa Rica views winning the biennial CONCACAF event for the first time as a very realistic prospect. After hav-ing been eliminated at the quarterfinal stage in both 2011 and 2013, the roster that achieved so much in Brazil remains almost intact for this summer’s competition. The team’s dynamic midfield tandem of Celso Borges and Joel Campbell is still a handful for opposing defenses. Up top, the Ticos will again be reliant on their talis-manic captain Bryan Ruiz, who will likely pair with either Marco Ureña or veteran Alvaro Saborio.

With a second straight title, though, the United States would book its ticket to Russia outright. Of equal importance is the opportunity to earn a place in next year’s Copa America Centenario. While four teams have already qualified — the United States (host), Mexico (invited), Costa Rica (Central American Cup champion) and Jamaica (Caribbean Cup champi-on) — there are still two advancement paths for the remainder of the Gold Cup field.First, if the winner of the Gold Cup is not one of the four aforementioned qualifiers, that team will earn direct qualification to the Centennial event. The re-maining place would then be determined via a play-off between the two highest ranked teams not yet qualified. However, if either the U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica or Jamaica win the tournament, then a four-team playoff field will be constructed to determine the final two qualifiers. While Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago have continually represented their re-gion with distinction — each earning trips to the tourna-ment’s semifinals — it remains that no Caribbean-based squad has ever advanced to a Gold Cup final. While the road may again seem perilous, reaching the 2015 Gold Cup final in Philadelphia is not out of the ques-tion for some of the Caribbean’s finest. Six-time Carib-bean Cup champion Jamaica looks particularly ready to make a mark, having enjoyed a solid spell of recent re-sults heading in to the tournament. Under the direction of German-born manager Winfried Schäfer, the Reggae Boyz will feature numerous players currently plying their club trade in top European leagues. Trinidad & Tobago also could be poised to spring a Gold Cup surprise, having made tremendous improvements in recent years under manager Stephen Hart. While the absence of Kevin Moli-no is sure to be felt, the Soca Warriors could prove a tough test throughout the competition. Although they played in the 1990 World Cup, the Americans’ success in the Gold Cup a year later was somewhat unexpected. After toppling Costa Rica 3-2 in the last Group B game, a stunning 2-0 semifinal victory over Mexico followed. Those matches ignited regional rivalries that continue to flourish today. Though the Gold Cup has produced only three different champions in 12 editions, there have been no shortage of thrills and special themes.

A TRICOLOR TRIODisappointment resulting from the 1991 Gold Cup setback clearly motivated Mexico as it went on a remarkable run of three straight titles, the only team to accomplish that feat in tournament history. In 1993, the Tricolor had the plea-sure of lifting its first trophy at the Estadio Azteca in Mex-ico City, topping the U.S. 4-0 in the final before more than 130,000 fans. The songs they sing, the emo-tions they express and the genuine brotherhood known only to those who share their passion.José, Ryan, Diego, Yosvany and Oscar are five of those fans, all of whom will be cheering on their respective teams at the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. They will be wearing the colors and waving the flags of Costa Rica, the United States, Guatemala, Cuba and Mexico. More than just their own countries, however, these five fans also represent what it means to be a true supporter: they are passionate, loyal and willing to do whatever it takes to see their team succeed.“Costa Rica qualified for the 2002 World Cup on a rainy night in San Jose,” recalls José Perreaguirre. “My friends and I all had other commitments, but there was no way we were going to miss that game. It was an incredible night. Costa Rica beat the United States and I vividly remember my friends and I crying, draped in the Costa Rican flag, signing the national anthem at the top of our lungs as we celebrated our nation’s FIFA World Cup berth.” While extraordinary, Jose’s experience is a shared one. On more than one occasion, under the soft amber glow of streetlights in Havana, Yosvany Hernández –a Cuban na-tional team supporter– has also set aside other obligations in order to watch his national team play. Superstitious-ly, Hernandez always wears his Industriales baseball cap when Cuba is in action. It’s his lucky charm.

Algo pare-cido le ocurrió en La Habana a Yosvany Hernández: “Por acompañar a la Selección en el estadio Pedro Marrero perdí un derecho de examen, justo de Análisis Matemáti-co, con lo difícil que es”. Lo hizo con su gorra de béisbol de Industriales, la cábala que siempre lo acompaña.Todas las supersticiones son válidas para apoyar a los colores amados. “Me pongo la camiseta que Clint Dempsey usó para el centenario de la Selección de EE.UU., que tiene un escu-do majestuoso, y brindo con una cerveza americana”, cuen-ta Ryan Youtz, un estadounidense de Omaha, Nebraska, que alienta al equipo de las barras y las estrellas desde que tenía 9 años, cuando su país organizó la Copa del Mundo 1994. En todos los casos, la niñez es el primer punto de contacto con esta pasión. Así lo entendió José, cuando Claudio Jara marcó para Costa Rica en un amistoso contra Corea del Sur, en 1987: “Jara era el ídolo goleador de Herediano y le pre-gunté a mi viejo, entre asombrado y decepcionado: ‘¿Por qué Jara juega con otro equipo?’. Entonces me explicó la existen-cia de la Selección y me llené de orgullo por su gol”.La alegría del fútbol atraviesa desde Panamá hasta Alaska, des-de las nieves hasta las arenas blancas. “En Cuba nos juntamos frente al televisor con una botellica de ron. Y si se juega en La Habana, acompañamos a todo sol y con mucho canto”, se entusiasma Yosvany. Something Ryan Youtz, an American from Omaha, Nebraska, can attest to. “For every game, I wear my Clint Dempsey U.S. Centenni-al jersey,” says Youtz. “I love that badge.” For most fans, the emotional attachment between a sup-porter and their team is cultivated at a young age. Diego Ortiz, a 21-year-old from Guatemala, is a prime example.“I was just four years old when Juan Carlos Plata scored against Brazil in 1998,” recalls Ortiz. “It was unforgetta-ble. Years later, I was able to attend a hexagonal qualifier with Trinidad & Tobago. I was there as Guatemala won, 5-1. Now, as I make my traditional game-day walk from the Obelisk in downtown Guatemala City to the Mateo Flores Stadium, I think about those moments. I will nev-er forget them. They are a part of me.”In Mexico, a young Oscar González Garduño fell in love with El Tri as a seven-year-old, watching the 1994 World Cup on TV. “I was at school,” said Garduño. “I remem-ber the excitement. Together with my classmates, we watched the victory over Ireland. It was unforgettable.”Garduño’s greatest memory, however, dates back to the 2003 Gold Cup. “That was my first time ever watching a game at the Azteca,” he said. “I remember being there, in our great footballing cathedral, watching as Mexico defeated Brazil on an incredible goal from Daniel Osorno.
