• Highly connected and influenced by Social stakeholders• How effectively influence the government to introduce

and execute Air Pollution standards ?• How effectively influence Air Polluters to convince them,

that expenditures made on Air Pollution prevention are needed ?

money – pollution dependant• Elections• Medical expenses for healing sick• Expenses for air pollution prevention• Is there any threat, that after full incorporation to China,

Hong Kong will have to accept much lower Chinese standards ?

• Without dividing the Air Polluters into local and abroad, their concerns are:

– Are the expenditures made on improving the air pollution prevention having great influence on lowering the incomes ?

– Is the awareness of Air Polluters developed ?

• Very high impacts on human health (premature deaths, increased hospital admissions)

• Lost of income – lost working days, medical expenditures

• If the Air Pollution is high, tourist will resist coming to Sui Kung, and they are one of the most income generating group

• Questionnaire

• I have conducted a small survey, to get the idea on:

– what is the general awareness on Air Pollution in Sai Kung

– Any desires to make a change

– General attitude

From the questions asked, the results are as follow:From the questions asked, the results are as follow:

Conclusions• Many people see Air Pollution as a problem in Hong Kong ,

though half of the respondents have no idea about Sai Kung

• The knowledge of results of being exposed to severe Air Pollution is almost none (3/26)

• People in general save the energy in houses, but rather because of the money saved, not pollution created

• Not many of my respondents have a car (7) and majority (5) of them says that the tend to drive responsible (in means of fuel usage)

• People say that they prefer to use big double-decker busses than the PLT’s (because of the price mainly)

Page 17: Concerns of the stakeholders Government Air Polluters NGO’s Social Stakeholders Economic Click the thumbs for more info

• 22 of my respondents said, that they like to take a walk/bike instead of using mechanized transport

• Unfortunately, people rather don’t care about using recyclable products

• Knowledge about governmental and NGO’s activities on air pollution field is almost none – Gov (3/29) NGO’s (2/29)

• But what is important, about 2/3 of the respondents said that they do care about environmental program during elections

• Last, 10 of the respondents said, that dealing with AP is really important for them and 9 that they don’t know – that means that we can change their minds.

Suggestions on concerns

• Basically, principles are easy :

– Less energy we burn, the less we pollute– The more efficiently the energy is produced, the less we

pollute– The cleaner the fuel we use, the less we pollute

Solutions - What to do ?

Page 20: Concerns of the stakeholders Government Air Polluters NGO’s Social Stakeholders Economic Click the thumbs for more info

Replace old vehicles• Hong Kong road density is one of the highest in the world with 265

vehicles per kilometer.

• Older vehicles pollute way more then new ones. Even when using the ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) is used.

• There are few steps than should be taken:

– Adding bio-diesel fuel to one sold in HK. There are two gains from it:

• it burns much cleaner and • it is the best way to recycle used frying oil

– Convert the local bus from old diesels to Euro IV standards– Mandatory conversion of minibuses to LPG

Sai Kung needs an Air Pollution measuring station

This is the current map of air pollution measuring stations in Hong Kong. Sai Kung got none. Why not building one in SK ?

In Sai Kung

Make rail the priority

• Transport in Hong Kong is supposed to be concentrated on rails, but currently it is road-led. Building new MTR lines in place of highways would definitely decrease the level of pollution.

Energy Efficiency

• We all know, that whenever we enter a bus, restaurant or other indoor place temperatures are so low that we have to wear a jacket. Everyone complains about it – why we can’t change it ?

Page 24: Concerns of the stakeholders Government Air Polluters NGO’s Social Stakeholders Economic Click the thumbs for more info

• Promote the Air Pollution knowledge, make people aware of danger it carries

• Promote recyclable products

• Promote governmental and NGO actions on the field – people care about environment during elections ! Make the government know of it.

• If you have to drive, try to combine it with other means of transportation (walk, ride a bicycle)

• Make maximum use of public light transport

• Switch off engine while waiting (6 seconds of idle time = fuel needed to start engine again)

• While using a car, try to accelerate gradually

• Use cruise control on the highway

• Obey speed limit

• Keep your car tuned up

• Try to combine all places you want to go today into one trip

• When buying a car, look for the most efficient in terms of fuel usage and pollution dealt – try using this web site to help you :

• Choose recycled products pr products with recyclable packing

• Print and photocopy both sides

Page 31: Concerns of the stakeholders Government Air Polluters NGO’s Social Stakeholders Economic Click the thumbs for more info

• turn off lights, air conditioning when not required (you save both energy, money and power from plants)

• Use fan instead of AC

• use thermostat to turn off A-C

• use energy saving equipment both in restaurants and home (change incandescent lights with fluorescent lighting)

• Dry clothes on a clothesline

• Select products that are water based (e.g. paints)

• Do not use aerosols (they contain high amounts of VOC)
