Neil BrownlessMusical Director
Musical DirectorNeil Brownless is a trombonist and conductor based in Northampton. He has been Musical Director of Abingdon Concert Band since September 2013. His inventive programming has seen audience and player numbers rise, with concerts such as Around the World in 80 Minutes, A Symphonic Beach Party and many more.
Neil began his conducting career whilst reading maths at Portsmouth University, where he was Musical Director for the university’s Big Band. Neil is Deputy Musical Director of Northampton Concert Band and Musical Director of Towcester Studio Band. In his 4 years with Towcester, the band has won 5 competitions, the most recent being the Oxfordshire Winter Contest in February. In demand as a conductor, Neil has helped out many other groups including Olney Brass, Daventry Brass, Raunds Temperance Band and the Charity Symphony Orchestra among others.
As a player, Neil has performed with many different groups and theatre pit bands. He recently played Tuba for Kidlington Concert Brass in the 2017 First Section National Brass Band Championships where the band came 3rd. Neil is about to undertake a new phase in his musical career as a musician in the Corps of Army Music, but hopes to continue conducting Abingdon Concert Band alongside this.

Abingdon Concert BandThe band was formed in 1977 as Abingdon Military Band and the instrumentation remains the same as that found in modern military bands. Over the years the band has given around 200 public performances. The band plays a range of music from classic concert band pieces to film scores and television music, musicals, Disney and contemporary arrangements for concert band. Last year, in what was our 40th year, we enjoyed bringing you music indoors and out, on occasion with our friends from Abbey Brass, all washed down with a swig of Hornblower. We think this ‘Back to the Music’ concert is sure to be a highlight of our 2018, but we’re already looking forward to a summer with more outdoor events for you to enjoy.
