A Snapshot of America

The Last Dragon

Comprehension Skill Drawing Conclusions

Read the article. Then read the statements on the next page.

Decide if the statement is true, false, or if not enough

information is given to draw a conclusion.

United States Population to Double

Washington, DC- By the year 2100, there will be twice as many Americans as there are today. Imagine twice as many cars on the highways. Imagine twice as many people in line at the supermarket. Can our nation handle the change?

Today about 275 million people live in the United States. According to the Census Bureau, by 2100 that number will be about 5 71 million. That would make our population density (people per area) a bit over 160 people per square mile. In comparison, the density of Germany today is over 400 people per square mile. It's a good thing that our country is large and vast.

Today there are around 65,000 people age 100 or older. In 2100, there may be 5 million. The elderly will make up one~fifth of our population. The median age (the age at which half the population is older and half younger) will rise by 2100 to over 40, compared to around 3 6 today.

The Hispanic population of the United States is expected to triple in the next 50 years. The Asian and Pacific Islander population will more than triple. Today, non-Hispanic white people make up about three-quarters of the population. Although that group will grow, too, by 2050, they will make up only about one-half of the total.
