WELCOME!All of us at Concordia feel privileged and proud to be part of your life story, and we encourage you to take
a moment to reflect and rejoice. You have done it, and what you have done is a big deal! We are eager
to celebrate your accomplishments. Commencement ceremonies are a cherished academic tradition that
celebrate a milestone accomplishment for graduates and their families. Welcome to the 2021 Concordia
University commencement ceremonies!

COVID-19: All graduates, guests, faculty, and staff are required to wear a mask while on campus. There will be no exception and those without a mask will not be permitted to enter the Field House. Concordia will have disposable masks on hand for those who may need them. All participants are required to maintain a 6-foot distance from others not in their immediate family. No eating and/or drinking will be permitted in the Field House. Vending machines will not be accessible during commencement.
Photography: Empire Photography will be taking photos of your graduate several times today. If you’d like to snap a photo of your graduate, you are asked to remain in your seat while doing so. We ask that you do not occupy the aisles for any reason during the ceremony.
Each graduate is photographed as they receive their diploma. Preregister your email address at www.cuw.edu/commencement-photos so you can receive your complimentary proofs quickly. Commencement is a once-in-a-lifetime moment so don’t miss out! If you have any questions, please email Empire Photography at [email protected].
Flowers for your graduate: You may purchase flowers for your graduate in the Field House lobby. Please give them to your graduate AFTER the ceremony. Graduates will not be allowed to carry flowers during the ceremony.
Safe exit: Campus Safety is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our guests who will be leaving graduation and walking to their vehicles. The roadway in front of the Field House will be closed to vehicular traffic for one hour after graduation. Guests with limited mobility can be picked up on the north end of the roadway or directly west of the Field House entrance in the adjacent parking lot. They can also be picked up at the Administration Building entrance. It is the experience of the staff that the roadways outside of campus will become gridlocked for an hour and a half after graduation ends. This is due to the major intersection of Highland Road and Port Washington Road and being unable to handle the large exodus of vehicles. Please be patient.
Thank you!

Academic ApparelCaps and gowns have been in use in the United States since colonial times, but it was not until 1895 that an Intercollegiate Code was prepared, regulating the design or pattern of the gowns and hoods and the colors and materials to be used.
The three types of gowns generally worn are made of black material. The bachelor’s gown has long, pointed sleeves; the master’s is made with a long, closed sleeve and a slit for the arm. The doctor’s gown has a full, round, open sleeve. It is faced with velvet and has three bars of velvet on each sleeve. The black mortarboard style cap is worn for all degrees, but only doctors or presidents of institutions may wear a gold tassel.
The hood is the most important and distinctive feature of the academic costume. It enables anyone to distinguish at a glance the various ranks and at the same time recognize the university which has given the degree.
The doctor’s hood, of black cloth matching the gown, is four feet in length and made with a wide panel. The master’s and bachelor’s hoods are three and one-half and three feet in length, respectively. The hoods for all the degrees are lined with silk in the official academic color or colors of the institution which has conferred the degree. The colors are not necessarily the same as the school’s athletic colors, although in many cases they are. Many schools that use the same colors distinguish themselves by using different shades of that color. Where there is more than one official color, the chevron is used. Concordia’s colors are blue and white, so hoods will include those colors as well as the color of the major.
The binding or trim of all the hoods is velvet; two, three, and five inches wide for the bachelor’s, master’s, doctor’s degrees respectively. The color of this velvet trim indicates the department of learning or faculty to which the degree pertains.

Commencement SymbolsThe mace served as a war club in medieval times, and later came to represent the protection and preservation of knowledge as universities explored ideas within and across many disciplines. CUW’s mace displays our four core values and the University seal. At CUW, we typically entrust the mace with the faculty chair, although at many institutions it is carried by the senior faculty member who represents the authority of the faculty to approve the granting of degrees.
Finally, the academic banners represent CUW’s six schools: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Health Professions, Nursing and Pharmacy. Each banner is carried by a faculty member or a student from that school.

BACCALAUREATE SERVICEMay 6th, 2021
How is a Baccalaureate service different from a graduation exercise? Quite simply the graduation or commencement exercise celebrates the fact that a student has completed all the academic work required in order to earn a certain degree. A baccalaureate service celebrates the calling of God in that person’s life into a specific vocation. You will notice that not all the vocations celebrated today are professional church vocations. They are, however, all Christian vocations. During our service today, the hymns and the Scripture readings celebrate the fact that God in his grace is calling these women and men into his service as nurses, social workers, teachers and lay ministers. Our prayer of thanksgiving is that they joyfully hear God’s call in their life, confident that His plans for them are good plans.
The Prelude “Fanfare for Organ” John Cook Hannah Engwall, organist
Please stand as the Processional begins
The Processional Hymn “The Church’s One Foundation” Lutheran Service Book (LSB) 578
1. The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation, by water and the word: From heav’n He came and sought her to be his holy bride; With His own blood he bought her, and for her life He died.
2. Elect from ev’ry nation, yet one o’er all the earth; Her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, with ev’ry grace endued.
3. Though with a scornful wonder the world sees her oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, “How long?” And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.
4. Through toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war She waits the consummation of peace for evermore Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest.
5. Yet she on earth has union with God, the Three in one, And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O blessed heavenly chorus! Lord, save us by your grace That we, like saints before us, may see You face to face.

The Canticle “We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God” LSB 941
~ a versification of the Te Deum laudamus ~
1. We praise You and acknowledge You, O God, to be the Lord, The Father everlasting, by all the earth adored. To you all angel powers cry aloud, the heavens sing, The cherubim and seraphim their praises to You bring: “O holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; Your majesty and glory fill the heavens and the earth!”
2. The band of the apostles in glory sing Your praise; The fellowship of prophets their deathless voices raise. The martyrs of your kingdom, a great and noble throng, Sing with the holy Church throughout all the world this song “O all majestic Father, Your true and only Son, And Holy Spirit, Comforter—forever Three in One!”
3. You, Christ, are King of glory, the everlasting Son, Yet You, with boundless love, sought to rescue ev’ry one: You laid aside Your glory, were born of virgin’s womb,
51
Were crucified for us and were placed into a tomb; Then by Your resurrection You won for us reprieve— You opened heaven’s kingdom to all who would believe.
4. You sit in splendid glory, enthroned at God’s right hand, Upholding earth and heaven by forces You command. We know that You will come as our Judge that final day, So help Your servants You have redeemed by blood, we pray; May we with saints be numbered where praises never end, In glory everlasting. Amen, O Lord, Amen!

The PrayersIncluded in our thanksgivings and petitions are prayers prepared by the following students in programs recognized in this service:
Lutheran Education – Anna Gain
Director of Church Ministries – Tessa Bidinger
Parish Music – Hannah Engwall
(At the conclusion of each petition the pastor will say “Lord, in Your mercy,” to which the congregation will respond “Hear our prayer.”)
The Lord’s PrayerOur Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
The Benediction
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.C: Amen.
[Gentlemen put on their caps for the Closing Hymn. Only the chancel party will recess during the hymn; all others please stay in place as we sing and
conclude the service.]
The Closing Hymn “Crown Him with Many Crowns” LSB 525
1. Crown Him with many crowns, The Lamb upon His throne; Hark how the heav’nly anthem drowns All music but its own. Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless king Through all eternity.
2. Crown Him the virgin’s Son, The God incarnate born, Whose arm those crimson trophies won Which now His brow adorn: Fruit of the mystic rose, Yet of that rose the stem, The root whence mercy ever flows, The babe of Bethlehem.
3. Crown Him the Lord of Love. Behold His hands and side, Rich wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified. No angels in the sky Can fully bear that sight, But downward bend their wond’ring eyes At mysteries so bright.
53
4. Crown Him the Lord of life Who triumphed o’er the grave And rose victorious in the strife For those He came to save. His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring And lives that death may die.
5. Crown Him the Lord of heav’n, Enthroned in worlds above, Crown Him the king to whom is giv’n The wondrous name of Love. Crown Him with many crowns As thrones before Him fall; Crown Him, ye kings, with many crowns, For He is king of all.
[Only the chancel party will recess during the hymn; all others please stay in place as we sing and conclude the service.]
The Postlude Finale (Symphony No. 1, Op. 14) L. Vierne Hannah Engwall, organist
