The CIM Program is still advancing and

still growing here at NJIT. Our num-

bers have increased to 80 students now

and proud to announce that we have

three students graduating in May in-

creasing the number of our graduates

to 30 since program inception.

We are proud to unveil the official start

of the NJIT ICRI Student Chapter. It is

the second chapter after California

State University at Chico led by Dr.

Tanya Komas. We look forward for the

new chapter to further explore the vari-

ous aspects of concrete repair and re-

habilitation and network with new in-

dustry partners.

The program is also pleased to an-

nounce that our ACI Student Chapter

won third place for the presentation

category at the Reinforced Concrete

Bowling Ball Competition at the ACI

conference in Reno, NV on March 23,

2014. NJIT has also been recognized as

an ACI Excellent University for the

third year in a row. Thanks to the ACI

NJ chapter, seven more CIM students

became ACI field level test 1 certified.

We look forward to the continued suc-cess and growth of the program. We

thank every company, organization,

and individual that has helped make

this possible.

Dr. Mohamed Mahgoub, CIM Program Director

The NJIT CIM

program con-

tinues to grow

in enrollment

but not fast

enough to meet the de-

mand of the

Northeast Pa-

tron employ-

ers. There are

approximately

three to four

job opportunities per student on aver-

age. Recruitment continues to be the

driving force of the program and secur-

ing the next generation of concrete in-

dustry professionals is the key to the

program’s success.

We are looking forward to the spring

2014 Patron’s meeting which will for

the first time feature a new interview

process. In the past, interested stu-

dents would network and potentially

secure internships and full-time jobs

on the same day of the meeting. Now,

employers will have the opportunity to request resumes prior to the meeting

and pre-select candidates to interview

immediately after the meeting. The CIM

program continually evolves to meet

the needs of their students and

Patron’s.

The future of the CIM program at NJIT

continues to prove fruitful with the

great effort and commitment of the NE

CIM Patrons. Do not lose the oppor-

tunity to become involved in the pro-

gram as a guest speaker, student men-

tor, scholarship sponsor, and CIM stu-

dent employer!

Recruitment continues to be

the focus of my initiatives on

and off campus. Internal trans-

fers into the CIM program once

again provides the largest in-

crease in enrollment. In addi-tion, incoming freshman are

showing signs of increase due

to efforts in local high schools.

Incoming freshman have the

opportunity to benefit from the

full CIM experience and we

would like to reach a point

where most of our students are

incoming freshmen. Incoming

community college students are showing great promis-

es with the help of the CIM student ambassadors mar-

keting CIM in their previous institutions.

There is no doubt that CIM is an excellent academic track and our greatest challenge is the continued mar-

keting and exposure that is needed. It is only a matter

of time before CIM is widely recognized in NJ and be-

yond. I am looking forward to once again attending the

American Schools Counselor Association Conference

this year. It is a great venue to meet key personnel to

network and make significant leaps into the high

school market in the Northeast.

Recruitment initiatives at NJIT are also very important.

CIM is often the talk of many undecided students at

NJIT as the CIM student ambassadors spread the word

throughout campus. I often meet with several students

at once to discuss the program. Below are some of the

major events at NJIT that provide great potential for recruitment.

NJIT Open House, February 23, 2014

NJIT Major/Minor Fair, March 12, 2014

NJIT Experience Day, March 30, 2014

The NJIT major/minor fair provides personal interac-

tion with prospective students in a one on one format.

The NJIT Open House is also a great event where nearly

one thousand high school students visit NJIT. We have

the chance to meet individual advisors and follow up

with potential school visits and provide information. The NJIR experience day helps us provide demonstra-

tions to students and also market the program.

We look forward to the continued accomplishments and

growth of the program and thank everyone that has

been an integral part of our formula for success.

From the Editor, Anlee Orama

Describe the opportunities that were available to

you through the CIM program and how did that

help you start your career in the industry.

In the CIM program, you are allowed to go see the in-

dustry first hand and understand what goes on in that

particular location. You also have people coming to

NJIT to explain the background of their company/

corporation and what they do. In this type of economy

we are in, it is very important to get your foot in the

door and with the CIM program, that is possible. Other

majors are not that involved, many do not require an

internship to graduate like the CIM program does.

The CIM program is the reason why I am currently

working for Sika Corporation in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

I am a Technical Service Lab Specialist. Sika is a world

known brand when it comes to the construction and

industrial field. We make sealants, coatings, epoxies,

grouts, concrete, admixtures, and so much more. I pro-

vide assistance to our sales force by doing testing of

product capability, making samples of our current sys-

tems, and general technical information. I also do pro-

totype product testing for managers in the different

product markets. Technical Services helps many differ-

ent divisions of Sika, distributors of Sika products, con-

tractors, engineers and home owner who are looking for

technical information on a construction product. I have

been working for Sika for three years, two years as an

intern and one year in my current position.

Dr. Mahgoub attended the SDC

technology forum held at Georgia

Institute of Technology. SDC Tech-

nology Forum #35 hosted a num-

ber of technology showcases on

innovative and interesting technol-

ogies that are seeking acceptance

in the concrete industry.

Dr. Mahgoub, Anlee Orama and

five CIM students attended both

the NRMCA conference and CON

Expo/Con AGG in Las Vegas, NV.

As always, the students gain inval-

uable exposure and networking

opportunities by attending confer-

ences. They also learn how they

can apply the CIM degree in the

real world. Very few students have

the opportunity to attend

CON/Expo since it takes place

once every three years.

NRMCA Latin American Sustainability Conference

Medellin, Colombia February 5-7, 2014

The 2014 WOC convention took

place at the Las Vegas Convention

Center. The CIM students had the

opportunity to become highly en-

gaged in manning the CIM booth,

attending seminars, and touring the

extensive venues and industry

booths.

The CIM auction was a success as

well with yet another record breaking fund raiser through the generous

donation of industry partners.

NRMCA has expanded to South

America ! Dr. Mahgoub, Anlee

Orama and CIM student Fabian De-

LaHoz traveled to Medellin, Colombia

to attend the first sustainability con-

ference. It was a great experience

networking with concrete profession-

als dedicated to improving the in-

dustry in a sustainable manner.

The NJIT ACI student chapter par-

ticipated in the Fiber Reinforced

Concrete Bowling Ball Competition

held in Reno, NV. The objective of

this competition was to demon-

strate the effects of fibers in con-

crete, to gain experience in forming

and fabricating a concrete fiber-

reinforced element, and to encour-

age creativity in engineering design

and analysis. The five students

from NJIT Adrian Milewski, Eric

Gedman, Michelle Neri, David Jara-

millo, team captain David Williams

along with their advisors Dr. Mo-

hamed Mahgoub and Anlee Orama

were able to place 3rd in the

presentation category out of over 30

national and international universi-

ties. The NJIT ACI Student Chapter

would like to thank their sponsors

Forta Fiber Corporation, and NJIT

Lab Manager Allyn Luke and assis-

tant Andrew Flory for their great

support.

CIM students Michelle Neri and

Michelle Ghanime, President and

Vice President of the NJIT ICRI stu-

dent chapter, attended the ICRI

conference in Chicago Illinois. ICRI

Metro NY Chapter has also spon-

sored our students to attend and

helped provide the funding for trav-

el. Many thanks to ICRI for their

support for CIM.
