This ‘n That………………………………………………………..APW Jack Over a winter weather lunch of reheated crock pot tomato bisque soup – seems like soup, chili and spaghetti always taste better served as leftovers – and a cheese sandwich assem-bled with two Trader Joe’s corn tortillas as substitutes for bread, with Girl Scout cookies for dessert (yep it’s that time of year again) served with a favorite hot tea, these thoughts about…

It’s Election Year At Lake Junaluska, Too……………………………………………….

Every even-numbered year, we elect our Junaluska Assembly Community Council (JACC) members.

The JACC elections process is administered by Assembly Public Works. The JACC recently appointed an Elections Board to tend to the upcoming summer election of council representatives, working alongside APW. Our work together is already under way.

The job of the Elections Board? They assure a smooth elections process. No hanging chads. No question left unanswered. It’s a big job, with their powers and duties delineated in the JACC ByLaws.

Their work results in a newly seated JACC, whose member terms will begin in September.

Council members can serve up to three continuous two-year terms, totaling six years. The council has seven members – five serve their Lake Junaluska geographic district and two are at-large.

The intent of the Council, according to the JACC Constitution, is to:

“Contribute to friendly, secure neighborhoods serviced by a responsive Office of Assembly Public Works organization;” and enhance the spirit of community and partnership among all those who

call this place home or otherwise have a stake in the life of this Assembly.”

Council members serve our community in several ways:

1. They address the needs and concerns of the various stakeholders in our community.

2. They support and advise the Office of Assembly Public Works.

3. They provide a forum for dialogue and communication within our community.

4. They advocate for the issues, concerns, and opportunities of our community.

Current JACC members are:

Jimmy Pennell, At Large, and JACC Chairman

David Baxter, Richland Creek District, JACC Vice Chairman

Alan Jackson, Utah Mountain District

Bill King, Shackford District

Jeanette Shaver, Lambuth District

Ken Zulla, South Lakeshore District

Jim Gilland, At Large, soon to be replaced by Clifton Metcalf for Jim’s unexpired term.

When you see these folks around the community, please join me in thanking them for their service.

Looking after all of us, the service of JACC is another example of what makes Lake Junaluska a special and sacred place. Jack Carlisle, AWP Director

This event is sponsored by The Junaluskans, Conference Center and private indi-viduals. This is a rain or shine event since the Lake will be coming back up before Easter. Jack Ewing ……………………………………..Executive Director’s Column A Shining Light

Many of you attended the Lake Junaluska Assembly Property Owners Organization meeting on Monday, Feb-ruary 15, 2016. If you were present you will have already heard some of the thoughts that I am presenting in this column but I thought it would be valuable for the Junaluskans who were not present to know what I said.2015 was a great year in many ways for Lake Junaluska. There were numerous ways that lives were transformed and renewed by being on these grounds. Examples include worship services in Stuart Audito-

rium and in the Chapel, Singers concerts, and youth programming. Groups and individuals experienced great Christian hospi-tality as well. From formal responses in TripAdvisor to informal comments by individuals who have been coming for years, our guests are noticing that the quality of the hospitality has increased in recent years. Our finances were, once again, excellent in 2015. For the fourth year in a row we ended with a balanced budget. And, once again, we shared that “profit” with our staff. Also, we were able to provide an “across the board” raise for all employees for 2016, a first in many years. In addition to the Conference Center being “in the black” both funds in Assembly Public Works ended the year “in the black” and increasing reserves. But, 2015 was not a good year in every way for Lake Junaluska. We did not do well in being a Christian community. The pain and division in the community over the issue of annexation affected all of us deeply. For the part that I played in contributing to this divisiveness and pain I sincerely apologize. It is now time for us to bring healing to our beloved Lake Junaluska. For the last three years we have pursued annexation with the Town of Waynesville. As you know, annexation has not hap-pened and the prospect of this happening in the near future is very low. While I do not have the authority to determine if an-nexation is continued to be pursued, I am in a position of influence and leadership and will not be recommending that we continue along the path of annexation in this year or in the near future. I believe it is time for us to explore and implement other models of sustainability for our community in the absence of annexation. The level of contentiousness in our nation and state is exceedingly high. I wish some leaders would be willing to speak words of civility and compromise rather than accusations and attacks. Unfortunately, our community has also experienced conten-tiousness. We don’t have to be that way; we can be better than that. We proudly profess that we are a Christian community. We believe God to be a God of love and that Jesus invites us to follow his example and be people of love. I invite you to join me in committing to bring healing to this community by being people of love and by coming together around strategies of community sustainability in the absence of annexation. We can be an example that our nation and state can follow; we can be a shining light showing the way to live in harmony and love. Please join me! We can do this!

Clothes to Kids This month we are inviting all of you who have not connected with us on Facebook to do so. Just go to Clothes To Kids of Haywood County, Inc and press 'like'. On our site you will see pictures of volunteers you will recog-nize, articles about the children and teens who receive school clothes from us and pictures of shoes, socks, undies, and clothes that you have helped col-lect! You will feel proud like we do of the contribution we are making to the community! Sylvia Russell

Junaluskan Dinner Our entertainment for the March 15 Junaluskan Dinner at the Terrace Hotel at 5:30PM will be Erika Wellman, playing the marimba, accompanied by her husband, Shawn, on per-cussion. Shawn and Erika Wellman grew up in the mountains of North Carolina. They both studied percussion during their high school and college careers, and majored in music education at Western Carolina University. After moving to Texas where they taught percussion in the public school system for 10 years and winning several prestigious awards with their student performance groups, they returned to North Carolina in the summer of 2014. Shawn and Erika are currently developing and building the band and elementary music programs at Invest Collegiate Imagine Charter School in Asheville. They continue to com-pose for several marching groups both in Texas and North Carolina as well as consult with percussion programs in the area. Throughout their careers, Shawn and Erika have remained active performers as well as educators. They enjoy preparing and performing seasonal programs in addition to various opportunities that arise, such as an original film score for one of the entries in the 2015 48 Hour Film Festival in Asheville. They are also members of the North Carolina Music Edu-cators Association and the Percussive Arts Society. Remember to purchase your dinner tickets in advance at the Bethea Welcome Center. Corneille Bryan Native Garden Ah, March! You just never know what the weather will bring. It's cold with dark, stormy clouds and spits of rain one day and several days later, there is blue sky, sunshine and warm breezes. It's enough change to call for a cold! March does bring many lovely surprises in our gardens. Daffodils are beginning to show their bright yellow blooms as well as crocus that shouts, "Spring". Then in the Native Garden there are also surprises. The spring ephemer-als, those plants that bloom, set seed and are gone in a few days, begin to show up in the Garden in March. Twinleaf is one of those native plants whose blooms last only a few days, but they so pretty if you can catch them. Their scientific name, Jeffersonia diphylla, honors Thomas Jefferson for his love of natural history. You can find these in the middle of the Garden. Shortia, or Oconee Bells, is rare in the wild, but we have several "patches" of it in the Native Garden. It's leaves are fat ovals and dark green in summer, but turn burgundy color in the winter. The blooms are white and fringed and they are espe-cially lovely when a breeze sets those little bells swaying. Why not take a walk through the Gar-den in March and see what others you can find. You may be surprised by what you discover. Janet Lilley

Springtime Quotes Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn. ~Quoted by Lewis Grizzard in Kathy Sue Loudermilk, I Love You It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade. ~Charles Dickens, Great Ex‐pectations In Spring, everything is full of promise.... The child sporting upon the lawn, and the season, sympathize together, and nature rejoices in her virgin loveliness. ~Charles Lanman, "The Dying Year," 1840 It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want — oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so! ~Mark Twain Awake, thou wintry earth ‐ Fling off thy sadness! Fair vernal flowers, laugh forth Your ancient gladness! ~Thomas Blackburn, "An Easter Hymn" No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. ~Proverb The year’s at the spring And day’s at the morn; Morning’s at seven; The hillside’s dew‐pearled; The lark’s on the wing; The snail’s on the thorn; God’s in His heaven ‐ All’s right with the world!
