Two-Electrode Conductivity Sensors -Model TB2

The rugged, industrial grade Model TB2 Two-ElectrodeConductivity Sensor installs directly into the processline or ABB flow cell. The sensor design allows for cellconstants of 0.01, 0.10, and 1.00 and a maximumcompensated measurement range of zero to 19.99millisiemens per centimeter. Mounting configurationsinclude inline, submersible, hot tap, and flow-through. Aunique flow cell is available for flow-through installations.Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) insulator tip material and316 stainless steel measurement electrodes providecorrosion resistance in all low to medium conductivitymeasurement applications.

The fixed cell constant makes the Model TB2 sensorsessentially calibrated upon installation and thusespecially well suited for low conductivitymeasurements. The sensor has an integral temperaturecompensation element and measurement electrodesthat have not been sandblasted or altered in any way. These features guarantee the sensors as easy to install, reliable, and accurate for all industrial conductivitymeasurement needs.

Choosing the Correct Conductivity Sensor

ABB manufactures three types of conductivity sensors:two-electrode, four-electrode, and toroidal conductivity. Each sensor type has its own unique advantages. Two-electrode conductivity sensors are only available for lowto medium conductivity ranges, with a maximumconductivity of 19.99 millisiemens per centimeter. Four-electrode and toroidal conductivity sensors are generallyused in medium to high conductivity measurementranges, applications with aggressive chemicals, andapplications that tend to coat or scale the measurementelectrode. Refer to the appropriate product specificationfor more information on four-electrode and toroidalconductivity sensors.

1. Determine the range of conductivity measurementdesired. Although they can be used at higherconductivity ranges, the optimum for two-electrodesensors is zero to 199.9 microsiemens per centimeteror the 0.01 cell constant. Table 1 lists the cell constantsfor two-electrode conductivity sensors and their respec-tive ranges.

2. Make sure that the process chemistry is compatiblewith 316 stainless steel measurement electrodes. Thismaterial is compatible with most process fluids exceptfor some acids. ABB manufactures four-electrodeconductivity sensors with special measurement elec-trode materials and toroidal conductivity sensors forprocesses that attack 316 stainless steel.

3. Establish the maximum process temperature andpressure.

4. Determine the sensor installation method: inlinethreaded, inline sanitary fitting, inline ball valve insertion, submersible, or flow cell. Table 2 lists the sensorscompatible with each method.

5. Select either a Pt 100 or Pt 1000 integraltemperature compensation element. The TypeTB82TE Two-Electrode Conductivity Transmitter andType TB84TE Two-Electrode Conductivity Analyzerboth accept either temperature compensation elementtype. The AX41 accepts a Pt 1000 temperatureelement.

6. Determine the length of cable needed to reach fromthe sensor to the instrument. Order the cable as eitherintegral to the sensor or by using the junction box andextension cable as separate items.

7. Use the information from Steps 1 through 6 and theordering guides to create a sensor model number. Onechoice must be made in all positions of the orderingguide.

Installation Methods

Table 2 lists the sensors and their applicable installationmethods. Complete information about each sensor islocated in the appropriate section underSpecifications, Dimensions, and Ordering Guides.

Flow CellsThe flow cell (Fig. 1) is available for both conductivityand pH sensors. It is designed for use with Model TB264Two-Electrode Conductivity Sensors, Model TB464 Four-Electrode Conductivity Sensors, and Model TB561 andTBX561 pH/ORP Sensors. Multiple inlet and outlet portsprovide flexibility with installation, calibration, andmounting configurations. The sensor can be insertedand removed from the flow cell quickly and easilywithout disconnecting the sensor from the instrument orjunction box. Refer to Table 3 for the flow cell kit partnumbers.

Figure 1. Flow Cell

Junction BoxThe junction box (Fig. 2) is a standard item, selectedfrom the ordering guide, typically used with an extensioncable for direct connection to ABB transmitters andanalyzers.

Temperature CompensationThe effect of temperature on conductivity is significant.Temperature must be compensated to a referencetemperature, typically 25-degrees Celsius (77-degreesFahrenheit), for accurate measurements. All of theconductivity sensors covered in this specification haveeither a Pt 100 or Pt 1000 integral temperature com-pensation element. These are located deep enoughinside the tip of the sensor to ensure a fast and accurateresponse to temperature changes.

The integral temperature compensation elements arecompatible with both the Type TB82TE transmitter andType TB84TE analyzer. These instruments are capableof several different modes of temperature compensation:manual, automatic for potassium chloride (KCl), user-entered coefficient in percent per degree Celsius, andthree types for pure water (trace acid, trace base, andneutral salt). Other choices are available to matchvarious acid and base solutions.

Specifications, Dimensions, and OrderingGuides

ABB offers several two-electrode conductivity sensors. The following sections contain detailed specifications, dimensions, and ordering guides for each sensor.

Model TB25 Sensors

Model TB25 sensors (Fig. 3) have an integralTri-Clamp® fitting for use in serilzeable services. A Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) approved siliconepotting material around the body of the sensor seals themeasurement electrode tip. The first style available hasan extended face that places the measurement elec-trodes into the process past the fitting. The extendedface style is narrow enough to allow cleaning chemicalsor steam to surround the body of the measurementelectrode. This assures crevice free cleaning. Thesecond style has a Tri-Clamp fitting that is flush with thesensor body. The Model TB25 sensor specifications arelisted in Table 4 and Table 5 is the ordering guide. Thedimensions are shown in Figure 4.

Model TB26 Sensors

Model TB26 sensors (Fig. 7) are easily installed intoprocess lines and vessels via the integral 3/4-NPTthreads, submersed directly into lines and vessels viathe 1/2-NPT backthreads, or inserted into a process lineor vessel through a ball valve. The ball valve providesisolation between the sensor and the process, allowingsensor insertion and removal while the line or vessel isfull. This is accomplished by using a 1-1/2 inch standardball valve. A compression fitting with flushing portsallows the operator to wash away any left over processfluid after removing the sensor. The flushing ports alsoprovide a quick and easy place to take a grab samplefor calibration. Variable sensor lengths are available forall Model TB26 sensor styles. The hot tap sensor canbe used with the compression fitting and without theball valve to provide even greater installation flexibility. The Model TB26 sensor specifications are listed inTable 8 and Table 9 is the ordering guide. The dimen-sions are shown in Figure 8.

Model TB27 Sensors

Model TB27 sensors (Fig. 11) can be inserted orremoved from process lines or vessels via a ball valvewithout dis turbing the process. The Model TB27sensor is designed for applications that exceedstandard hot tap sensor pressure ratings and foroperator safety. An extraction housing isolates theoperator from the process fluid. This housing has 1/4-inch ports for flushing, draining, pressurizing, ordepressurizing this chamber. Ruggedly constructed of316 stainless steel, these sensors withstand the mostdemanding processes and measurement requirements. The Model TB27 sensor specifications are listed inTable 12 and Table 13 is the ordering guide. Thedimensions are shown in Figure 12.
