CONFERENCE WELCOME
It is great that you have been able to dedicate this time to be a valued contributor to the annual discussion that is the Australian Regional Development Conference. The 2017 program represents the breadth of topic areas and key insights of specialist speakers that make this Conference a priority engagement in my own annual calendar, and the source of both critical and informative understanding of regional development issues.
The vast landscape of opportunity that lies beyond our burgeoning metropolitan centres is not only the place where so much of the national wealth has been generated but also where the nations’ future participation in increasingly globalised issues can be played out in strategic and creative ways. Our regional areas still provide the best places to live, enjoying some of the strongest social capital and offering lifestyle choices unrivalled in a new digital age.
Local communities increasingly engage in global connections as regional areas address crucial matters of: food and water security; equitable distribution of population growth and humane partnerships; communications and transport infrastructure; changing demographics and care for the aged and the myriad Government policy frontiers that spread a tangled web of influence.
This Conference is one of very few that bring academics, practitioners, policy makers, community leaders and Australia’s quiet achievers into the one purposeful forum. I trust it will being great value to you. I look forward to meeting you and sharing the exciting journey in Australian Regional Development.

Ms Melina MorrisonChief Executive Officer, Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals
Melina Morrison is the inaugural CEO of Australia’s first peak body for co-operatives and mutuals, the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals. She is an advocate for all forms of mutually owned enterprise, regularly contributing commentary and appearing as a spokesperson for the sector.
