More opportunities to `talk’ and `create’
Is this then a cycle for developing independence and innovation
Is it just applicable to students?
Talk and Create supports independence

IL develops most when students:
• Participants/investors• Collaborate• Co – construct/ Personalised
How does this link to Independence?
• Are we getting the balance right?• If not, how can we shift the balance?• How does the use of technology support this shift?• Are staff and students skilled to deliver this shift?• How does providing the right climate for change support this shift?
Is it just applicable to students?
•Learning is most satisfying and enjoyable when done `with’ people.
•Someone who learns from and `with’ others is then more likely to learn by themselves.
•The key to getting people to change their behaviour (become more independent) is whether they know and respect others that do the same thing. They will then take more personal responsibility to change as they are `within’ a group dynamic.
From your own experience, how muchdo you agree with the following statements?
Learning will demonstrate more of....1. Students reporting back on what they have learned2. Students becoming their own teachers 3. Students looking and finding the answers4. Students willing to take risks/have a go5. Students being inquisitive, asking questions – leading
the class dialogue6. Students pursuing their own interests and passions/
many will have their own projects on the side!7. Students choosing their own study methods/materials8. Students carrying out investigative/ extended learning
Teachers will be saying more of....1. How did you do that?2. How else could you have done that?3. Who did that a different way?4. Which are the tricky bits? What’s tricky about them?5. What could you do when you are stuck on that?6. What would have made that easier for you?7. What else do you know that might help?8. How could you help someone else do that?9. How could you make that harder for yourself? 10. How could I have taught that better?11. Who wants to lead this!
Students will say more of ....1. “I feel more involved in the lesson’2. “The teacher made it feel as if it was our project, not
theirs”3. ”We knew how to improve and edit our presentation as
we were making it”4. “I like being challenged to come up with my own
questions”5. “It was good making up our own mark scheme as it made
us think more about what success should look like”
In short..........
“Students working harder and YOU working smarter!”
Impact of all this..........
“Students will develop greater skills and capacity to learn and this will in turn make them more independent.”
‘The test of successful education is not the amount of knowledge that pupils take away from school, but their
appetite to know and their capacity to learn.’ Sir Richard Livingstone, Oxford, 1941
‘Pedagogy should at its best be about what teachers do that
not only helps students to learn but actively strengthens their capacity to learn - in and beyond school.’
David Hargreaves, SSAT, 2004

Remember us?
Go for GOLD......• How else can you deliver the SoL?• What will LOs look like?• How will you know new IL approach has made progress? What are your success criteria?• How can you record/monitor progress?• Can you involve students (co-construction)?
