Emphasis is placed on cutting-edge care of injured children; up-to-date protocols for adults with traumatic orthopaedic injuries; current research on traumatic injuries; and interprofessional collaboration to improve the standard of care. Following the conference, the participant should be able to: • Summarize current research on the treatment of pediatric trauma patients with free fluid found on abdominal/pelvic CT imaging • Describe the effects of a lightning strike on the human body • Apply new methods to diagnose and treat spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries • Evaluate cutting-edge care in the treatment of critically injured children • Implement diagnostic, treatment and management protocols for a patient with orthopaedic trauma • Discuss new methods to diagnose, treat and manage a polytrauma patient • Provide historical perspective on timing of orthopaedic fixation • Discuss weight-bearing limitations for surgical fractures • Implement innovative strategies for training and retaining new nursing graduates in the intensive care unit • Use evidence-based treatment strategies for rhabdomyolysis • Explain methods for diagnosing and managing a patient with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy • Discuss the six categories of the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score • Analyze the epidemiology of elderly falls • Interpret an initial trauma team’s evaluation of a geriatric trauma patient • Determine initial steps in caring for a bleeding patient • Properly apply a tourniquet to the arm and leg The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Paul L.
