CONFERENCE OPENING 2019
The ultimate goal is to establish a stable, clean energy supply – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But how do we get there and what business models are individual actors and companies developing to push this forward? Get involved and discuss fundamental elements of the new energy world!
The public perception of the renewable energy industry is often limited to wind turbines, solar panels and green transport. The truth, however, is far more complex: This progressive sector comprises countless fields of activity and innovative applications, and also faces a variety of demanding requirements. The actors and companies driving the industry forward today have fully embraced the energy transition. This opening session will discuss basic elements of this new, emerging energy world – as well as aspects that are often overlooked. By exploring how it is already transforming our lives, expert speakers will showcase the enormous, ubiquitous potential to accelerate the energy transition and power the future.

Beyond their obvious role of housing and accommodating people, facilities and services, buildings all around us are the potential foundation of integrated renewable energy systems. From shopping malls to town halls and homes to offices, innovative building management can help transform any building into a power generation facility, provider of flexibility services or e-mobility charging point. Drawing on real-world examples, this session will examine the practical benefits of sector coupling, discuss how innovatively networking building systems can lead to efficiencies, and present some of the most effective financing models.
Funding demands for large and medium-sized storage facilities continue to soar, with experts predicting that further significant growth will see investment exceed US$100 billion by 2030.However, many questions remain: How can we ensure economic viability while fulfilling Interactive homes are fertile ground for innovators and entrepreneurs hoping to provide consumers with added convenience – and produce an application that becomes indispensable. Some examples in this field include home control systems, smart thermostats as well as innovative monitoring and automation services for appliances. By affording consumers enhanced control and insight into energy consumption, these tools conserve resources and raise awareness. This session will analyze existing services and the reasons behind their success before going on to propose how key future processes – such as domestic power generation and EV charging – can be integrated effectively.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY: MICROGRIDS AND LOCAL ENERGY PROJECTS Time 4:30pm–6:00pmRoom 13 BThe rise of renewable energy sources presents commercial and industrial consumers with the opportunity to become more independent of national networks and grids. Though particularly prescient in areas with unsecure or expensive supplies microgrids also significantly reduce costs and emissions. Meanwhile, local sector coupling projects offer minor operators the chance to make a tangible difference. In this session, speakers will discuss the benefits of innovative decentralization approaches and how they can shape the transition to an all-electric world.

DIGITAL INNOVATION – TAKING GREEN PROCUREMENT TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Time 9:00am–10:30am Room 13 BWhile governmental initiatives are undoubtedly welcome, business remains a hugely significant driver of societal change. Recent years have seen some of the world‘s most powerful corporations – think Microsoft, IKEA and Walmart – embrace renewables and look for supply solutions beyond conventional, often long-term PPAs. Meanwhile, community-based models and virtual communities are breaking new ground in an effort to offer domestic and commercial customers green energy with choice and transparency. This session will analyze how major and minor players are changing how we buy energy.

Transmission and distribution systems operators play a crucial role in the energy system, maintaining generators, delivering power and managing real-time flows. However, the very nature of renewable energies adds further significance to their role and necessitates agile processes. Meanwhile, sector coupling can help to further enhance the flexibility and efficiency of energy supply and consumption. By examining inventive providers and existing regional flexibility markets as in the NODES and ETPA projects, this session will analyze the practical ways DSOs and TSOs can optimize their processes and networks.

DIGITAL PLATFORMS: COORDINATING DISTRIBUTED ASSETS IN PRACTICE
Time 2:00pm–3:30pm Room 13 BJust like in currency and banking, innovative applications are tapping into the potential of digital platforms and blockchain-based systems to change how we manage and consume energy. By networking and clustering geographically separate assets, these coordination approaches create synergies and enable the efficient operation of a decentralizing and democratizing energy sector. Drawing on a selection of leading case studies this session will explore how the power of blockchain systems can extract the maximum potential from an often-fragmented energy market.

As systems shift to include growing proportions of renewable energies – which, by their very nature, fluctuate far more than fossil fuels – market volatility is also on the rise. In response to increased variability and expected energy shortages, market-based solutions – such as intraday cap futures from the EEX – allow market traders to hedge price peaks in advance. Meanwhile, virtual power plants enable commercial customers to maximize value in short-term markets. This session will analyze emerging market innovations and the interface between power generation and energy markets.
