Welcome to the International Conference on Wood Adhesives 2013 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada! The wood

adhesives conference is the leading international conference focused exclusively on new research and devel-

opment related to wood adhesives and bonded wood products and has been held once every 4-5 years with

superb participation from both industry and academia.

The International Conference on Wood Adhesives serves as a premier forum for scientific and technical ex-

change. This year, in addition to the traditional topics surrounding wood adhesives and bonded products,

additional emphasis is placed on the environmental aspects adhesives and bonded wood products, and more

effective use of wood resources. Lower environmental impact and more efficient use of wood resources are

playing an increasingly important role in the 21st century. This has led to a continuing need for research and

implementation of new adhesives and bonded wood products. This conference provides an excellent oppor-

tunity to interact with leaders in these fields from around the world and to share knowledge and ideas among

industrial suppliers and users, academia, government, and NGOs.

We have recruited some of the best international technical experts in the field of wood adhesives as plenary

speakers to deliver to you a series of key topics related to new markets, standards, performance, and emerging

trends. You will also find ample social opportunities to reconnect with old colleagues and make new acquain-

tances at the welcome reception in the evening prior to the conference and at the reception during the poster

session.

This year we will have a large poster session that is co-sponsored by the Wood Based Composite Center (WBC),

USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), the Forest Products Society (FPS), and the Centre for

Biocomposites & Biomaterials Processing at the University of Toronto. We strongly encourage you to attend

the session to learn more about the newest student research and to help further strengthen the connections

between academic research and industry.

Another exciting new initiative this year is that in addition to the peer-reviewed proceeding for the conference

that will be published after the meeting, selected papers from the conference will also be included in a special

issue to be published by the Forest Products Journal.

On behalf of the organizing committee, we hope you will find the next three days of the conference productive

and rewarding. This year will be the first time this conference is held outside the United States. Toronto, being

the largest city in Canada, is also a cultural, entertainment and financial capital well known for its multicultural-

ism and for wonderful cuisines from around the world. We hope you will also be able to find time to enjoy what

this great city has to offer while attending the conference.

Enjoy the conference!

Sincerely,

Ning Yan, on behalf of, The International Organizing Committee

WelCome!

CONFERENCE CO-CHAIRS

Charles (“Chuck”) Frihart, Head of Wood Adhesives Science & Technology, Performance Enhanced Biopoly-

mers, USDA Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin, USA

Charles (“Chuck”) Frihart is an organic chemist who studies both the fundamental and

applied aspects of wood bonding. After spending 25 years in industry working on new

processes and products, he is now working at the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) in

Madison, WI. The FPL serves as a bridge between industry, academics, and other research

institutions to improve people’s lives by helping sustain our natural resources through

leading-edge science, technology development and peerless information delivery.

Related to this Chuck investigates reasons for bond failure from molecular to macro scale

aspects. This includes cooperative research with industry and other research institutions and participation in

organizations, such ASTM International.

Christopher G. Hunt, Research Chemist, Performance Enhanced Biopolymers, USDA Forest Products Labora-

tory, Madison, Wisconsin, USA

Chris Hunt has been a research chemist at the Forest Products Laboratory, Forest Biopoly-

mer Science and Engineering group since he received his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry

in 2006. His is interested in how wood cell walls interact with chemicals (water, compo-

nents in adhesives or coatings, wood modification), and how these interactions impact

the properties of the wood, the additive, and the composite. Recent projects have cen-

tered on the impact of infiltration on the bondlines of soy and PF adhesives.

Ning Yan, Professor, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Professor Ning Yan obtained her Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Uni-

versity of Toronto in 1997. She is a founding member of the Centre for Biocomposites

and Biomaterials Processing and an Associate Director of the Pulp and Paper Centre at

the University of Toronto. She has been the chair of the FPS wood adhesives technical

interest group since 2011. Professor Ning Yan has more than 130 publications in peer-

reviewed journals and international conferences. Her research program is focused on for-

est biomass based products and wood adhesives. She has won a number of prestigious

awards for her research achievement from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada,

the province of Ontario, and the University of Toronto. She is currently leading the large academia-industry

consortium on “Bark Biorefinery” at the University of Toronto.

foreSt produCtS journal online The Forest Products Journal (FPJ) is the

source of information for industry leaders,

researchers, teachers, students, and everyone

interested in today’s forest products industry.

The Forest Products Journal is well respected

for publishing high-quality peer-reviewed

technical research findings at the applied or

practical level that reflect the current state of

wood science and technology.
