Dear CHS Families,

It is hard to believe, but we are already beginning our process for course selection and registration for next school year! On the following page we have outlined our timeline and process for 2019-2020 course requests and registration. Here you will find information about the process for students to review the CHS Program of Studies with their HomeBase teachers and register for courses for 2019-2020.

HomeBase teachers have already begun guiding students through three extended HomeBase sessions. These three extended HB’s are designed to provide the “thinking” time for course selection. The electronic registration process is the mechanical component to registering for classes, which will happen in Humanities classes. We would like to thank the 9-11 grade Humanities teachers for providing class time for our electronic registration process.

On another note, one of the many things that happen in schools across Vermont (and the country) during the spring is administration of standardized tests. Students are required (by state and federal law) to take standardized tests in English Language Arts (9th grade), Math (9th grade), Science (11th grade), and a Fitness assessment (9th grade). These tests are designed to assess student achievement in these areas. Testing will happen during a student’s scheduled class time in most cases.

Quarter 2 report cards were mailed out last week. As always, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

We look forward to seeing you on March 5th for Family-Teacher Conferences!

Scheduling 2019-2020January 28: 45 minute homebase: Program of Studies and Talking Points:

The purpose of this is to provide time for students to read and review the CHS Program of Studies.

During this Homebase teachers read and review with students “Talking Points” from each department area. The talking points highlight key points that students need to know about each department’s course catalog.

February 4: 45 minute HB: 4 Year Credit Check and A/B Day Grid:

The purpose of this HB is to give students the opportunity to review their CHS transcript.

Reviewing the transcript is important for two reasons: it allows us to catch computer errors, as well as reminding students of what they have already taken. As students review their transcript they will work with their Homebase teacher to complete the 4 year credit check form. It is very important that students have time to review the transcript and complete this form prior to course registration as it helps your student determine what courses to take for the following year.

February 11: 45 Minute HB: Registration (PAPER)

The purpose of this HB is to have students sign up for next year’s classes on a paper form.

The paper forms are designed to make the online registration easier. It also provides think time to students so that when they are ready to electronically sign up the process is more efficient and accurate

Electronic Registration:Please note that students will register electronically for classes during the second week in February. You will be able to view their course requests in Parent Portal. You will NOT be able to see the students ACTUAL schedule until they are mailed home this summer by guidance. Any student who is absent will be registered by a guidance counselor. All students who attend one of our technical centers will be registered at their respective schools prior to February break.

Dear CHS Families,It is hard to believe, but yes, we are already beginning our process that signs your student up for next years courses! Below we have outlined for you our timeline and process for 2019-2020 course requests. The intent of this document is to outline for you how students will register for classes and what role homebase teachers have registering students. You will see in our timeline that homebase teachers will guide students through three extended homebase sessions. The three extended HBs are designed to provide the “thinking” time for course selection, while the electronic registration process is the mechanical component to registering for classes. We would like to thank the 9-11 grade Humanities teachers for providing class time to our electronic registration process.

Thanks,

Heather BaronJean Shea

Spring 2019 Family Teacher ConferencesTuesday, March 5th 10:30AM - 6:30PM

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our Spring conference day is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5th and conferences will run from 10:30AM-6:30PM.

Please be aware that teachers holding conferences on the first floor will break for lunch from 1:00-1:30 PM, teachers on the second floor will take lunch from 1:30-2:00 PM. Please refer to the building map provided on conference day for teacher locations.

We will have a modified drop-in format for conferences this year. Each CHS teacher is assigned a classroom where conferences will be held. When you enter the building you will receive a copy of your student’s schedule along with a school map informing you of where teachers are located.

Parents can visit teachers at their convenience during conference hours. Conferences are expected to take no more than 15 minutes. We do not make or take requests for conference times with a specific teacher or team in advance. We strongly encourage all CHS parents to attend our parent teacher conference day.

The drop-in format has been in place for the last few years. Every CHS teacher will have a sign-up sheet outside their door. Once parents arrive at CHS you can locate the teachers that you would like to speak with and sign up for a time slot on their door. The sign-up sheet is designed to decrease the waiting time that some parents may have experienced in the years past.

Please remember that you may call guidance and/or special education at any time to request a meeting with a teacher or team. CHS Teachers may schedule a longer conference with parents through the guidance office for a later date if a more detailed meeting is required.

How do Parent Teacher Conferences Work?● Pick up student’s schedule and map of teacher locations in the cafeteria.● Determine which teachers you would like to speak with.● Circulate throughout CHS to meet with all of the teachers you would like to see.● If teachers have a line, feel free to sign up on the sign up sheet on their door!

The Library was happy to host the end-of-the-semester Statistics class presentations. Lots of great projects and enthusiastic presenters.

As first semester classes ended, Exam Week began. Always a stressful time, the Library offered Exam Wellness Week. We do this every semester and it is welcomed by students, teachers, and staff. Aromatherapy, chocolate, fresh fruit, games, and lots of words of encouragement were available throughout the week. We hope it helped!

The exam week schedule also gave us an opportunity to offer a database training to CHS staff. Several paraprofessionals attended the hour-long intro to research databases the library uses, including Britannica and Vermont Online Library. Both resources offer digital tools that make student research more accessible for all.

Project Grad takes place on June 15, 2019 (the night of graduation), and goes all night long! The event provides CHS graduates with an opportunity to celebrate with their classmates in a safe, drug & alcohol-free environment.

Project Grad IS NOT organized by CHS staff or the administration. It takes a team, a collective effort of parents and student volunteers, to pull off an event of this size. In other words… WE NEED YOUR HELP! There will be numerous opportunities to contribute throughout the year, and there is plenty of work to go around.

The Project Grad Committee is starting work on what this year’s celebration will offer. To ensure that you are up-to-date with the latest information, please add your info to our mailing list by emailing Tiera Porter at [email protected]. You can also join our Facebook group. Look for Colchester High School Project Grad 2019 and ask to join.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, February 6th at 7pm in CHS room 101. Please join us as this will be an important meeting about the day of Project Graduation Events and gifts.

From the Athletic DirectorHello Laker Fans,

The Dance team has been consistently placing in their competitions and are fine tuning for their NVAC competition on 2/8 at South Burlington and the State Championships on 2/23 at Vergennes.

The Alpine team has been hitting the mountain hard, slicing seconds off their times in preparation for their District Race on 2/25 & 2/27 at Jay Peak and States on 3/4 & 3/5 at Burke.

Our Girls’ Hockey team has been very successful. They are preparing for senior day on 2/13 vs South Burlington at 4:30 PM and a deep playoff run.

Colchester Parks & RecColchester Parks & Recreations is excited to offer some valuable and fun programs this Winter/Spring!

News From the Burnham LibraryHello! We’re in need of some reliable, responsible, shelving and book drop volunteers! If you’re interested, pop in and chat with a youth librarian about your availability—please note this is a commitment beyond the 10 hours you may be required to complete for a class. If you’d like to read to kids this summer, talk to Kelsey soon! Coming up, we watch TATBILB (yes, that cute movie on Netflix with the girl and the boy, after the book by Jenny Han, the title of which Kelsey can’t legally send you in a newsletter) with popcorn and anime as usual Friday the 8th. Sign up online so Kelsey knows to let you in the door after closing. If you didn’t sign up for one of last season’s practice tests the spring line up is on our website of free SATs and ACTs for you to practice. If you don’t sign up, and there aren’t at least 8 people for each, sadly Kelsey has to cancel to sign up early! As usual, call or email the library if you have questions or suggestions!
