MARRIAGE AND HOLY COMMUNION Due to the many misconceptions regarding the Catholic Church
and marriage, please note that a Catholic may marry a non-
Catholic in the Catholic Church, without his or her conversion to
the faith. In some instances, a person, who has been previously
married, can also be married in the Catholic Church after
consultation with the priest.
If as a Catholic you’re married outside of the Catholic Church
without the permission of the Church, we respectfully ask that
you refrain from receiving the Eucharist until your marriage has
been validated (“sacramentalized”) by a Catholic priest or
deacon. To remedy this situation, please call one of the priests to
make an appointment to have your marriage validated. We are
only too happy to bring back to the couple, the graces necessary
to live out their marriage, and to reconcile them with the graces
of the Eucharist.
FAMILY OF FAITH Last January we launched the Family of Faith
Campaign at St. Francis de Sales. Based on the
pledges, our Parish will receive $332,235 over the
next 5 years. Throughout, the year parishioners
have been fulfilling their pledges. With the funds
received, we would like to report that phase one
of installing new pews is now complete. To date,
six new pews have been installed. Phase two will
begin in early 2018. Thank you once again for
your generosity.
If you or anyone in your family is sick or
advanced in age and subsequently unable to
attend Mass regularly and would like Holy
Communion brought to you at home on
Sunday morning, please contact the office
at 905-683-1403 and the Eucharistic Outreach coordinator will
contact you. Members of this ministry are especially sensitive to
the needs of the homebound and have a special devotion to the
Holy Eucharist.

REFLECTION
We continue this week with our look at the Infancy Narrative
in chapters 1 and 2 in St. Luke’s gospel.
St. Luke looks at how the message of the Old Testament (OT)
was fulfilled in the times of Jesus. Consider how God keeps
His promises He made to Nathan in the OT about the
kingdom of David (see 2 Samuel 7:9-16) as it parallels the
information given to Mary by the archangel, Gabriel (see
Luke 1:32-33). There is between these two passages a clear
parallel of a great name, throne, divine sonship, house and
kingdom. Gabriel’s words mimic Nathan’s oracle which
became the foundation of Jewish messianic hopes. Thus we
read:

Another fulfillment of the OT is the visitation of Mary to
Elizabeth. The early Christians understood Mary as the ark
of the (new) covenant, but she surpasses it. The ark of the
old covenant contained within it three miraculous things: the
tablets of the old law, the manna and the staff of Aaron. Mary
holds within her womb Jesus the Messiah: the Law Giver, the
Bread come down from heaven and the true High Priest. This
makes her the true ark of the (new) covenant. Parallel the
visitation in the New Testament, Luke 1:39-41 with the OT,
2 Samuel 6:2-16, of how King David reacts in the presence
of the ark of the (old) covenant:

St. Luke also provides us with four songs of praise in his
Infancy Narrative: by Mary (1:46-55), by Zachariah (1:68-
80), by the angels (2:14) and by Simeon (2:29-32). Mary’s
song of praise is very reminiscent of Hannah of the OT (see
1 Samuel 2:1-10).

Hannah was an Israelite woman who was ridiculed for being
barren. She cries out to God for a child and God intervenes
in her life, blessing her with Samuel who was called to
renew the people of Israel. Hannah dedicated her son in
the temple to the Lord’s service and she sang a famous
canticle of praise.

Like Hannah, Mary conceives a child through miraculous
means. And like Hannah, Mary dedicates her son in the
temple (Lk 2:22-24). Both Hannah and Mary break into song
for the providential son each was given by God. While
Hannah’s song culminates the future coming of a king,
Mary’s song rejoices that God has given Israel the long-
awaited Messiah-King, whom she carries in her womb.
