Brief History of Carrabelle:
In 1528, the first Spanish expedition of Pánfilo de Narváez passed through the area on its way from Tampa Bay to the Rio Grande. From the late 17th century through early 18th century, a few passages referring to the
area are mentioned. Carrabelle, Dog Island, and St. George Island served as points to stage raids on local ports,
as well as San Marcos de Apalache in 1677 and 1682.
In 1876, explorer Nathaniel Holmes Bishop of Medford, Massachusetts, navigated the Crooked River through
the lowlands east to the Ochlockonee River. In 1877, Oliver Hudson Kelley from Massachusetts founded the
town and named it "Rio Carrabella," after his niece, Caroline Hall.[1] The following year, the first U.S. post office
was established with its address as Rio Carrabella. Hall served as the town's first postmaster. By 1881, the population was between 500 and 600 people.
In 1891, the Carrabelle, Tallahassee and Georgia Railroad was established to connect Carrabelle northward
through Tallahassee to the Florida-Georgia line, eventually terminating in Augusta, Georgia. The City was chartered by the Florida Legislature in 1893.
On August 1, 1899, the 2nd hurricane of the season struck the area, almost destroying the town and leaving just nine homes.
In 1942, Camp Gordon Johnston was opened for the purpose of training amphibious soldiers on nearby beaches. The camp trained a quarter of a million men and closed in 1946.
On August 23, 2008, Tropical Storm Fay made its record fourth landfall in the state of Florida at Carrabelle.
Attractions:
From historic fishing villages to beautiful coastal waterways, Carrabelle is a peaceful relaxing destination, especially for true boaters and fisherman.
Camp Gordon Johnston Museum The Camp Gordon Johnston Museum is a historical museum of World War II history and artifacts. It is located at 1873 Highway 98 West in Carrabelle, Florida. The museum highlights the history of Camp Gordon Johnston, focusing especially on the quarter of a million soldiers who received training in amphibious operation in Carrabelle. The museum's exhibits include vehicles, photographs and thousands of artifacts including uniforms, mess kits and soldiers' war souvenirs.
Tate’s Hell State Forest

floodplain forest, floodplain swamp, basin swamp, upland hardwood forest, sandhill, pine ridges, dense titi swamp thickets and scrub. Tate's Hell State Forest is an important hydrologic area and includes a section of the New River (Florida Panhandle). The park's watershed provides fresh water into the Apalachicola Bay, the Carrabelle River and the Ochlockonee River.
Local legend attributes the forest's unusual name to Cebe Tate, a local homesteader who became lost in the woods in the mid-1870s. He had ventured into the woods with his hunting dog in order to shoot a panther that had attacked his livestock. The legend is often recounted with Tate becoming separated from his dogs and lost for seven days and seven nights before coming to a clearing near Carrabelle, where he lived only long enough to say to a passerby "My name is Cebe Tate, and I just came from Hell" before collapsing.
Crooked River Lighthouse
The Crooked River Lighthouse, also known as the Carrabelle Light, was built in 1895 to replace the Dog Island Light on Dog Island, which had been destroyed in 1875 by a hurricane. The location on the mainland allowed the light to serve as the rear range light for the channel to the west of Dog Island, used by ships in the lumber trade.
Carrabelle Beach
Located 1.5 miles west of Carrabelle, Florida on US 98. This easily-accessed, curving, white-sand beach is located just west of the City of Carrabelle on U.S. Highway 98. There is plenty of convenient parking, outdoor showers, bathroom facilities and covered picnic tables. Features several small picnic shelters with grills, restrooms and parking for about 40 vehicles. This is a very popular beach with a gently sloping bottom and calm surf. Since the beach is protected by Dog Island from heavy winds and seas, it is often the most suitable of all our major beaches for families with young children. While the center of the beach near the bath houses can get crowded on holidays, this is a long, curving beach with plenty of space to find your own sand and solitude. The beach borders on St. George Sound and the water is clear and inviting. This is a great beach for nature-watching, too. Dolphin hunt mullet up close in the surf in a sometimes spectacular display. Many shore birds can be sighted and it is a hot spot for birders during spring and fall migrations. Be sure to keep all pets in sight and respect the birds' need to rest and not be disturbed.
