Welcome, guests! God’s love welcomes you—no matter who you are or where you come

from— and so do we. We believe that Jesus Christ is the true Savior of all people. By his perfect

life, innocent death, and triumphant resurrection he saves all sinners even without our help. Jesus

Christ makes us special people, right with God and ready for life! We learn this from the Bible,

God’s authentic message of grace and guidance for us. Whether you are a first time guest or a

curious observer with little religious background, we are delighted to share our worship with you.

Please come back and worship with us again.

Children’s “My Worship Notes” are included in another document. They can be used by chil-

dren of any age to keep notes during the service.

INVOCATION

[We invoke, that is, call upon the name of the Triune God to be with us this morning. The name of the Triune God and

the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms]

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

ABSOLUTION [The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth: to forgive the sins of

penitent sinners” (The Small Catechism, First: What is the use of the keys?). See John 20:21-23]

M: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all

unrighteousness. Upon this, your confession, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the

Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: Let us confess our sins to the Lord.

C: Father, I have sinned against you and am no longer worthy to be called your child. Yet

in mercy you sacrificed your only Son to purge away my guilt. For his sake, O God, be

merciful to me, a sinner, and in the joy of your Holy Spirit let me serve you all my days.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

[The Prayer of the Day compliments the theme of the day.]

M: Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gift of grace.

C: Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell

abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Fa

ther, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE WORD

[Like Mary, we sit at the feet of Jesus to hear his Word (Luke 10:39).]

FIRST READING Acts 2:1-21 The cares we have, we cast on Jesus, knowing that any suffering will be borne in joy with

eyes fixed on the glory that’s coming.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the

blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All

of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled

them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When

they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them

speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speak-

ing Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians,

Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10

Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both

Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in

our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews

and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15

These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was

spoken by the prophet Joel:

M: The Gospel according to John chapter 7.

C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

Please stand

[It has been a tradition in the Christian church to stand for the reading of the gospel for the past

2,000 years. Just as subjects rise when a king speaks, we rise out of respect

for the words of our King.]

17 “ ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters

will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they

will prophesy.

19 I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and

billows of smoke.

20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and

glorious day of the Lord.

21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

GOSPEL John 7:37-39

37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is

thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams

of living water will flow from within him.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in

him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been

glorified.

M: The Gospel of the Lord! C: Thanks be to God!

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, this only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks,

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for

you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is

my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this,

whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

M: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

God, now and forever.

Prayer Requests

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness." 1 Timothy 2:1-2

Keep in your prayers this week: All those in our midst who may be dealing with physical ailments, emotional hurts or the loss of a loved one; prayers of thanksgiving that we are able to worship to-gether as a congregation in our building once again; the high school and college classes of 2020 as they graduate virtually, that the Lord grant them contentment and hope as they look to the future; that our online outreach efforts would reach more and more people with the gospel; that the Lord grant wisdom to Governor Holcomb, President Trump, Vice President Pence, and the Coronavirus

workers in our congregation as well as all of the doctors and nurses in our country - that the Al-

mighty Physician would guard and protect them from all disease and illness, and grant them pa-

tience, compassion and love to all they serve; all those affected by the coronavirus; for the current

state of our world, that we remember our God is still in charge and will sustain us and give us what

we need; that our Lord would give us the means to show the love of Christ as we support our

neighbors in need;
