ABOUT SHENYANG

Shenyang, as the capital of Liaoning Province, P. R. China, is the economic, cultural, transportation and business center of northeastern region of China. The largest industrial city in northeast China, it has a population of about 7 million. It is also renowned for its industrial status and affluent history. There are three world cultural heritage including Shenyang Imperial Palace, Zhaoling Tomb and Fuling Tomb. The most important historic site in the city is Shenyang Imperial Palace(沈阳故宫), the former residence of the Qing Dynasty founder Nurhachi and his successor Huangtaiji and the place where Emperor Shun Zhi, founding monarch of the Qing imperial rule had himself crowned. In 1644, the Qing government moved its capital to Beijing and since then, Shenyang Imperial Palace and Shengjing (Shenyang) came to be known merely as the "sacred place where the dragon took on wing". During their lifetime Qing rulers from Emperor Kang Xi to Emperor Dao Guang had come on eleven occasions to offer sacrifices to their ancestors in Shenyang.

The second largest imperial palace only next to the former Imperial Palace in Beijing, Shenyang Imperial Palace is by itself a grand architectural conglomeration of halls, pavilions, towers and temples with carved beams and painted columns architectural styles of the Mongolian, Han and Manchu nationalities. The Zhaoling (or Northern Mausoleum 北 陵 ) is the cemetery of Huangtaiji and his wife Borjigid and the Fuling (or Eastern Mausoleum 东 陵 ) is where Nurhachi and his wife Yihnaran were buried. Tranquility and solemnity reign over the two burial grounds with the Tianzhu Mountain at the back and the Hunhe River extending in front of the tombs. Some 100 kilometers southeast of the city is Qianshan Mountain known as a scenic area with temples pavilions and exquisite sculpture.

Presentation Topic

Probabilistic Approach for the Analysis of Rock Excavation StabilityGang Chen

The deterministic description of rock excavation stability with a safety factor is frequently

insufficient and, sometimes, misleading. The applications of the probabilistic analysis to determine

the likelihood of a rock excavation failure have been proposed by many researchers. The

probabilistic analysis will lead to a better understanding of excavation stability and provide more

complete information on the safety and stability of rock excavations.

The difficulty in estimating the failure probability of a underground excavation is the complexity

of mathematics involved. In order to overcome this limitation, the first-order second-moment

approximation of the failure probabilities is utilized. The technique simplifies the computation

significantly and allows for the analysis of relatively complex stability problems.

A few case studies are presented in the paper to illustrate the principles and applications of the

probabilistic analysis of rock excavation stability, including specific discussion on the removable

probability and failure probability of key blocks as defined in the block theory. The study indicates

that the distributions of parameter values play a significant role in the excavation stability, which

cannot be disclosed by the conventional methods of stability analysis. Greater dispersiveness of

the parameter values will lead to a different probability of failure, although the factor of safety

estimated by conventional methods remains the same if the mean values of the parameters are

unchanged.

Numerical analysis of the change in groundwater system with tunnel

excavation in discontinuous rock mass

In this study, a 2D finite-element analysis, using the SEEP/W program, was carried out to

estimate the amount of groundwater flowing into a tunnel, as well as the groundwater tables

around wetland areas during and after tunnel excavation through rock mass. Four sites along the

Wonhyo-tunnel in Cheonseong Mountain (Gyeongnam, Korea) were analysed, where the model

domain of the tunnel included both wetland and fault zones. The anisotropy of the hydraulic

conductivities of the rock mass was calculated using the DFN model, which was then used as an

input parameter into the continuum model. Parametric studies were performed on the influencing

factors to minimize uncertainties in the hydraulic properties. Moreover, the volumetric water

content and hydraulic conductivity functions were applied to the model to reflect the ability of a

medium to store and transport water under both saturated and unsaturated conditions.

ROCK JOINT GEOMETRY: SIZE AND SURFACE

New ideas for estimating a joint size distribution and determining the contact areas of a rock joint suggested by Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering lab of Seoul National University are introduced. The former idea adopted a distribution-free estimation technique which does not require any assumption of the joint size distribution type or even of an upper limit on the joint size distribution [1]. The latter requires only three-dimensional surface coordinates at the initial stage before shearing, and a joint surface is modelled as a group of triangular planes of which contact condition is examined by calculating the relative displacement of both surfaces from their initial locations.

Presentation Topic

Strength failure and crack coalescence behavior of red sandstone specimens

containing two pre-existing fissures

To understand deeply the fracture mechanism of all kinds of rock engineering, it is very

significant to investigate the fracture coalescence behavior of pre-fissured rock. In this

presentation, we have carried out uniaxial compression experiments to evaluate the influence

of fissure angle on the strength, deformability and fracture coalescence behavior of

rectangular prismatic specimens (80×160×30 mm) of red sandstone containing two unparallel

fissures (a kind of new fissure geometry). Both photographic monitoring and acoustic emission

(AE) techniques were all used throughout the entire period of deformation in order to explore

the fracture coalescence process and mechanism. The macroscopic deformation

characteristics of red sandstone containing two unparallel fissures were systematically

evaluated by analyzing the relationship between the stress-time curve and the fracture

coalescence process, AE events. The cracking process depended on both the fissure angle α2

and the heterogeneity of red sandstone material. And then, the red sandstone specimen

containing two pre-existing fissures are carried out the numerical simulation by PFC2D.

Numerically simulated results for red sandstone specimen containing two fissures under

uniaxial compression show a good agreement with the experimental results. These

experimental and numerical results were expected to improve the understanding of fracture

mechanisms of rock engineering with intermittent structures.
