REACHING IN, REACHING OUT, REACHING GOD

Fr. Jim’s Jottings At our Parish Staff Meeting this week we talked about how this covid-19 is affecting us. One person highlighted the difficulty of “uncertainty”. That helped explain a lot of my feelings since mid-March. I don’t do well with uncertainty. I like to know where I am, where I am going, and how am I going to get there.

As much as we think we know about covid-19, there’s a lot I don’t understand. One of the biggest uncertainties is when will we be in control of this virus. Some tell us it might be a couple of years. Others offer us the hope that by next March we’ll have an effective vaccine. And some people keep saying this whole thing is a hoax! Who can we believe? With this uncertainty, I keep wondering if and when we will have a full church again? Instead of 400 people at our Masses, we are hovering around 100. There are good reasons why some don’t come because of age or health concerns. But I do admire those who decide to come to strengthen their faith in God and relationship to the Church. For sure, the Eucharist is our most important prayer and means of celebrating our identity as Catholic Christians. Yes, the Bishop has lifted the obligation to offer Mass each weekend. And I think it will be a long time before we are “obligated” to offer Mass…if ever. Until we get control of this virus or are “obligated” to celebrate Mass, how are we strengthening our faith? Are we taking time to pray alone? Have you stopped into Church for a private time of prayer? Have we reflected on the scriptures for 10 minutes? We now have four weekend Masses: Saturday (4:00 pm), Sunday (8:00 am, 10:00 am & 6:30 pm). None of them are so crowded that you have difficulty practicing social distancing. If you are healthy, I invite you to come and celebrate Mass with us. Come when you can to stay connected with our Lord and good ol’ St Joe’s. Blessings.

Church Renovations…Continuing

This week will feature the construction of a new platform for our altar and pulpit. We hope it will be in place for our Masses next weekend. Thanks to some parish volunteers, the old parquet platform will be pulled apart and replaced by a hardwood floor. It will keep the same shape but will be up against the reredos, allowing for more space in front of the altar. In a couple of weeks new carpeting will replace the current carpet in the Marian shrine and in front of the sacristy. We will also be carpeting the choir area. And we’re keeping our eyes on the day our church pews come “home”. Again, thanks for your patience through all of this!

Non-Raffle Raffle

Thank you to those who have already returned their “Non-Raffle Raffle” donation. It continues to be impressive to see the quick and generous response from so many. So far we have received $21,651!

If you can, we are asking parishioners to return the raffle envelope with a donation of $35 or more. This raffle is very helpful in getting us through the summer months and especially as our contributions have slipped with the coronavirus. Again, thanks!

Can the Parish Help? These are very difficult days for some families in trying to make ends meet. Some have lost their job or have had their hours cut back. If St Joe’s can help in some way, please call the Parish Office and let us talk with you.

Live the Liturgy - Inspiration for the Week There is something very sacred about silence. Silence connects us. It is where the heartbeat of all of creation—and its life blood and source—are embraced and where oneness is experienced. When in the presence of an environment that is silent, the worries, tribulations, struggles, and challenges of life seem to fade away, and we can experience a peaceful whisper. We can call that whisper God. Through the practice of contemplative prayer, we can find our way to that inner place of silence even in the midst of great distraction, busyness, and noise. The silence becomes one with us and grounds us. When we become friends with silence, friends with God, we can hear the gentle whisper of God’s voice saying, “Come, stay here. Trust me and you will not fall.” ©LPi

Church Chuckle EPITAPH (in a cemetery in England)

Remember man, as you walk by, As you are now, so once was I, As I am now, so shall you be, Remember this and follow me.

Someone replied by writing on the tombstone:

To follow you I'll not consent, Until I know which way you went.
