Principal’s Message I’d like to start this week’s newsletter by acknowledging the exemplary behaviour of our Stage 3 students last week on the Canberra excursion. The accompanying teachers and I were struck by their excellent manners and their cooperation over the course of our 4 days away. I was particularly touched by the number of students who have come up to me since the excursion to thank me for coming away with them. It is very satisfying that when a lot of planning and preparation goes into such an event that the students will make the most of the opportunity and enjoy themselves. Special thanks go to Mr Carlin, Miss Ellis, Miss Glawson and Miss Mitchell who also gave up time with their families and poured their enthusiasm into the excursion so that the students had a memorable time. With today’s newsletter you should have also received a term statement and subsequent permission notes. We normally send these out in Week 3 only, however, we are sending out an additional statement due to the number of activities which will commence at the beginning of Term 4 (including the K-2 swimming program). Parents always tell us that it helps them to plan ahead if plenty of notice is given. When making payment, please ensure that the relevant permission note/s are also attached. Students who have been invited to participate in the Senior Touch Gala Day on the last day of Term 3 would have received their permission note today, however this event is not listed on their statement. Finally, to all of the Dad’s out there, have a terrific Father’s Day on Sunday. My favourite Father’s Day quote is: “My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.” – Jim Valvano It was certainly true of my dad. I hope it is true of yours. David Holland Principal ‘Spring Clean’ This week is the last opportunity for families to send in their completed ‘Spring Clean’ notes. We will continue to collect notes until Friday afternoon. So far the response rate has been lower than we had hoped, so if you have a few minutes this week, it would be great to complete it and return it by Friday (there’s a spare at the back of this newsletter in case you have misplaced yours). We can assure you that your opinion matters and it will be considered by the planning team. Term 3, Week 8 Tuesday 2 nd September 2014 Congratulations Students of the Week! Hunter Athletics

Congratulations to Milli Windred, Dylan Robertson and Danika Spamer who did a terrific job of representing

Cardiff South PS at the Regional Athletics Carnival last Friday. Dylan finished 7th overall in the high jump; Danika

was 6th overall in the 800m; and Milli finished 5th in the 100m final and 1st in the 200m Final. For the second

year in a row, Milli will represent our school at the State Athletics Championships. Well Done Milli, what an

achievement!

Stage 2 Excursion The wet weather really worked against us last week with both walking excursions to the library needing to be

cancelled. Mrs Beever is currently investigating the possibility of the Stage 2 classes still visiting in two weeks’

time. More information will be sent home, once it has been confirmed.

Father’s Day Breakfast A reminder that our annual Father’s Day breakfast is on again this Friday morning (5th Sept) commencing at

7:30am under the COLA. As in the past, we are simply asking for a gold coin donation to help cover costs.

The difference between teasing and bullying From time to time, parents in our school speak to the teachers about their child being ‘bullied’ at school. Upon

investigation, the teacher will often conclude that a particular student has been teased but not bullied. The

Department’s definition of bullying is as follows:

“Bullying is repeated verbal, physical, social or psychological behaviour that is harmful and involves the misuse

of power by an individual or group towards one or more persons. Cyberbullying refers to bullying through

information and communication technologies”

The key element that helps us determine the difference between teasing and bullying is whether or not there is

a pattern of ‘repeated behaviour’ which has occurred. Instances of teasing are still unacceptable and are dealt

with by the teachers based on the circumstances and age of the children involved. However, bullying is more

serious and a pattern of repeated behaviour needs to be established before the school’s anti-bullying policy can

be applied. For more info visit: http://bullyingnoway.gov.au/index.html

PSSA Finals Congratulations to all of the students involved in the PSSA competition this year. Unfortunately both the soccer

teams have missed out on making the finals, but the junior and senior netball teams have successfully made it

through to the finals which are scheduled for this Friday. Please keep an eye out for the permission notes which

were sent home last Friday with the details. The netball finals will take place at the Nancy Dwyer courts Cardiff

with the first game starting at 10:00am.

Library News The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge is now finished for 2014. I have had the pleasure of validating 280 entries.

What a fabulous reading effort from the majority of our students. Well done awesome readers!

Congratulations to all the brilliant spellers who tried out in the Premier's Spelling Bee. Representing our school

on Wednesday 10th September at Hamilton Public School will be Meabh Nash and Emma-Kiara Copas from

Stage 3 and Erin Hartley and Emalee Millington from Stage 2. Good Luck Girls!

Preschool needs Mulberry Leaves Over the next several weeks, the preschool will be following the life cycle of

a Silk Worm. Among other changes, an appetite for Mulberry leaves will

develop during this process. If you or a neighbour has a Mulberry tree, the

preschool would appreciate a steady flow of leaves over the coming weeks.

If you are able to help and you do not have a child in the preschool, we ask

that you drop your bag of leaves into the main admin office. Thank you for

your support.

Choralfest 2014

Choralfest is a singing competition designed to celebrate singing through primary and high school vocal

ensembles across the Hunter Region. It is an enrichment opportunity that is sure to be enjoyable for all its

participants. ‘Young Notes’, the Senior Choir from Cardiff South Public School will be participating in this event

at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre in Term 4, Week 4 (details included in today’s term statement).

Students in the choir have received a CD this week with the competition pieces they need to practice at home

and rehearsals will be held weekly at school to prepare for this event. Choralfest provides a great opportunity

for our choir to display their progress over the year and observe other performances in a fun and friendly

atmosphere. Parents are welcome to attend, however a $5 entry fee will be charged at the venue. Photographs

are available for parents/friends to purchase on the day of the performance only, for $15.

Canberra

Snow and Cabin Report In Canberra, we stayed at The Canberra Carotel Motel in cabins with our special groups. Of a morning Miss Mitchell would come around for room inspections and I would like to brag that the group in B3 (Candice, Katie, Emily S, Danika, Jordy, Meabh, Alyssa, Miranda, Georgia and Tori) got top marks every morning! The other cabins did o.k. too...I guess. B3’s cabin was across from Miss Glawson’s cabin, we sneakily had a look-out posted, but we didn’t realise she saw the curtain move each time we peeked out. One night, when we were playing Murder in the Dark, I tripped over the chair where Georgia’s and Alyssa’s iPods were charging and they fell to the floor. Georgia quickly jumped up to get to her iPod and started to resuscitate it! Another night, some girls from another cabin decided to get artistic and draw on Taite’s face while she was sleeping. Miss Glawson was disappointed with their artistic ability and they spent a few cool moments doing star jumps outside. Now for the food…it was way better than Myuna Bay! We got dessert every night and didn’t even have to sit with the teachers! Miranda had some interesting food concoctions – tomato sauce, salt, gravy and butter on chicken schnitzel, followed with tomato sauce and salt on her ice cream…hmmm! Dylan and Nathan both had birthdays while we were away. They had a huge birthday party with 79 guests, with two other schools joining in, yummy birthday cake and a huge serenation of ‘Happy Birthday’ too. Day 2 was SNOW DAY!!! After a comfort stop and getting geared up, we arrived at Smiggins. We were all very excited as this was the first time most of us had seen snow! Snowballs were flying everywhere and people loved going up the hill and sliding down on their bottoms and bellies, forwards and backwards, sometimes in the longest trains ever seen. Emily Frith made the most delicate snowman at the highest altitude with the most beautiful buttons. Hannah, Beth, Cassie and Mikayla made a snowman named ‘Alec’ at lower altitude with less delicacy – rocks, bark and sticks were involved. I thoroughly enjoyed tackling Miss Glawson, Mr Carlin and Mr Holland; at one point I had Miss Glawson begging for mercy as others assisted to help me ‘snowcrush’ her face…guess I won’t be getting a good report now?! Overall, we had a great time and a fantastic experience. Thanks to the teachers for making it so much fun and suffering the snow assassin attacks! Danika S Questicon and the Dino Museum On Monday the 25th of August Stage 3 set off on two coaches. On one coach we had Mr Holland, Miss Glawson and Miss Mitchell and of course us kids. On the other coach there was Ms Ellis and Mr Carlin and their groups. We had a safe and tiring, but interesting trip down to Canberra. We had lunch in Mittagong Park and a quick game of footy and soccer. By the time we reached Questicon it was about 2:30pm. We got to spend some money at the gift shop first up and buy some really cool things like dry ice cream, bouncy putty, giant slinkies and miniature Newton’s cradles. Then all the groups split up, most groups first went to the gallery with the giant slide in it and experienced free falling; of course I’m too much of a scaredy cat to go down (I did get up there and try though). Most of the kids free fell, even our teachers did…I didn’t think they had it in them! The rest of the time we were busily interacting with loads of activities like: walking the line, crazy mirrors and shadow snap. At 5:00pm we arrived at the Dino Museum for the ‘Dinos at Night’ tour. It was raining so we had to quickly run inside. The museum was dark, just like ‘Night at the Museum’ and although we waited for T-Rex to come alive, he didn’t. It was interesting to see the dinosaur skeletons fossilised. We even saw their poo fossilised…some people even touched it, yuck! Did you know that birds are dinosaurs? So the next time you’re eating a chicken nugget, you are eating a dinosaur! We also got to touch a meteorite…wow! After this we had dinner and checked into our cabins. Overall, it was a fabulous first day! Thankyou everyone for a memorable trip Jordie D
