PET RESCUE’S 30TH YEAR - Where We Are Now
More of you are here celebrating with us than ever before. We think that means that more of you believe in what we do. So it seems that going all out for our cats and dogs while reaching out to more of them has your approval. That makes us truly proud and we are so grateful to have you with us and around us.
We’re happy to let you know that in addition to rescuing animals from dire conditions and finding them homes (about 700 in this past year), we’ve extended our work fur-ther.
We’re changing the lives of dogs at the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter. Pet Rescue has helped put into effect a program in which volunteers walk them every single day, bring in funds to make the shelter safer, cleaner and more comfortable and has train-ers working with the dog walkers and evaluating and teaching the dogs how to be-have—how to sell themselves to adopters—so that instead of languishing in runs or being euthanized, they are going to homes. (A portion of the proceeds from this Gala will help these dogs and our clinic is pitching in to neuter and spay them).
Pet Rescuers are now helping out at the sorely neglected Harrison shelter too and we’ve taken in a number of its animals for adoption.
We’ve been more active than ever in Trap Neuter Release (TNR) for feral cats, net-working with other groups and individuals. We trap, spay/neuter and keep the adopt-able cats, and release the healthy ones, hundreds of them in the past year. On March 10th we’re holding our first TNR workshop. Sign up for it!
Pet Rescue Cats North in Putnam Valley is giving cushy space to some of our unadopt-able cats while we’re taking their adoptable ones down here. In addition, they’re plac-ing cats with adopters who live nearby.
We’re in on the formation of an area coalition (still unnamed) to act against puppy mills. Since store puppies all come from notoriously cruel puppy mills, we’re aiming to educate everyone not to buy those puppies nor buy anything from the stores that sell them.
After all these years, we've fine-tuned our unique volunteer-based structure with new by-laws. We now have a seven-member board and eleven committees.
With all of the above and more, we’ve earned the Guidestar Exchange Seal listing. Guidestar registers charities to guide foundations and other donors in their giving. We’ll show up well and trust that donors will notice.
Our volunteers work hard, each in many ways, but without support from others, we couldn’t go on. We are sincerely grateful to every one of you.
Sue Kamell President
OUR HISTORY
In 1982, Sue Kamell, with another volunteer and the manager of the Elms-ford shelter, left after trying unsuccessfully to persuade its director to im-prove conditions for the animals. They were convinced they could do bet-ter.
Within days, their operation was busy with animals they picked up from the streets themselves and were brought to them. The three women came up with the name Pet Rescue for their ads to make sure adopters knew that they were not breeders, that their animals had been around, had histories.
At first they could accommodate all of the cats and dogs in their homes but as they took in more, some of the dogs were boarded out, none for long because adoptions were brisk.
In 1985, Sue moved with the whole menagerie to twenty acres on Buckhill Road in Harrison. There the animals had a campus that attracted a lot of adopters. But it wasn’t a legal shelter so after a little over two years, Sue and Jackie Leake, who adopted a dog from Pet Rescue and then stayed to work for it, had to find another place. Although the new place, a house in Duchess County wasn’t legal either, the local officials were delighted to discover them and promptly asked them to take in their dogs. They were safe for a while.
While Jackie took over in Duchess, Sue, back in Larchmont along with Rye resident, Betty di’Iuglio, chauffered animals between Westchester and Dutchess, upstate to be sheltered, down to be shown for adoption. But in less than a year, the Dutchess house was filled with Jackie’s special pets and those brought in by the local PD leaving no room for Pet Rescue. They were back where they started, keeping the animals in Sue’s and Betty’s own homes plus kennels.
After a while, activity eased off as neutering of dogs was becoming more common. Sue was seriously considering going back to painting when Ruth Frumkin answered an ad for a puppy that Sue’s daughter, Elizabeth, had found in Syracuse. The puppy was too unmanageable, even for Ruth, but she asked if there was any way she could help.
That changed everything.
OUR HISTORY
On her first assignment, going to a housing development to pick up and then
return an adopted cat for neutering, Ruth found an endless supply of other cats
which she brought to Sue’s house. Sue was in deep again. She and Ruth spent the next summer trapping cats in Flint Park to get them neutered, over 100 of them. Pet Rescue dealt with cats mostly but then Ruth picked up an SOS on the internet about dogs in a shelter in North Carolina. They were young and healthy pets but were going to be killed for lack of shelter space and people to adopt them.
Since then, for about ten years, Ruth has been arranging transports of dogs from the South about every two weeks. Sometimes she makes the trip her-self. She has gathered slews of volunteers to receive and foster the dogs and do a lot else.
Pet Rescue has modernized. Our website lets adopters see pictures of all of our beautiful dogs and cats, where and when they can meet them, issues alerts about those that need special help, and lets people know about events like the Gala and Hounds on the Sound.
The Cat Palace, a space rented to house cats and a clinic to treat ours and other unadopted animals, is part of our history too. We’ve been there for almost four years.
For the last three years, Pet Rescue had teamed up with the New Rochelle Humane Society for Hounds on the Sound, a dog and people march and buoyant fair at Glen Island Park that benefits both organizations.
An extraordinary number of creative and talented volunteers that have become part of Pet Rescue over the years carry out with utmost dedication the mandate in our charter “to do all things necessary and proper to fur-ther the care and humane treatment of pets and to facilitate the private adoption of cats and dogs” are in our history and assure our future.
John & Denise Mara
Honorees
John Mara is in his 21st season with the Giants but he has been affiliated with the Giants his entire life. The franchise was founded in 1925 by his grandfather, Tim Mara. John joined the Gi-ants in 1991 after a law career specializing in labor and employment law and litigation. Now the franchise’s President and Chief Executive Officer, he is responsible for all administrative, legal and financial aspects of the organization.
John & Denise live in Westchester and have 5 children and 3 grandchildren. They became involved in Pet Rescue in 2004 when Denise, having recently lost a dog, wanted to adopt a dog rather than buy one. Her research on Pet-finder brought her to Pet Rescue. Within half an hour of submitting an appli-cation she got a call back about a dog for adoption. That began an 8 year rela-tionship with Pet Rescue. They have adopted a total of 4 dogs from Pet Res-cue and their extended family has adopted many more.
Denise has walked dogs, processed applications and found homes for well over 100 rescues. She says that what impresses her most about Pet Rescue is the volunteers, who are all very dedicated and really care about animals they are helping.
John and Denise have also been extremely generous when it comes to Giants’ resources. The Giants Foundation has made a generous grant to Pet Rescue annually since 2007. Denise spearheaded a fundraising calendar for Pet Res-cue in 2007. We brought some of our dogs to Giants stadium to pose with the players; the photos were featured in a calendar which we sold at the stadium and to supporters. Every year they donate VIP tickets, behind-the-scenes tours, training camp packages and Giants merchandise for the silent and live auctions, which have contributed greatly to the success of our Galas.
It would be fair to say that John and Denise have turned every Pet Rescue volunteer into a huge Giants fan. To Pet Rescue, the Maras are real winners - and it’s not only about the Super Bowl.
Pet Rescue is proud to honor Denise and John Mara who have made such a huge impact on the success of our organization.
Margaret Reilly-Antalec & Joseph Antalec
Honorees
Margaret Reilly first contacted Pet Res-cue in 1999 on behalf of a stray cat that she rescued from a friend’s backyard. The cat turned out to have FIV and Mar-garet was very relieved when we found him a home with a volunteer who had other cats with FIV. Margaret then asked how else she could help and that was that. She helped bring our cats out to meet potential adopters and at-tended meetings of volunteers. She was up for anything and everything.
In 2001 she married Joe Antalec and he got involved too. They do everything together; Joe says they are joined at the hip “with Velcro.” When we have our annual tag sale, we count on them working quietly and enthusiastically at the massive job of organizing the donated books. At the first sale they magi-cally uncovered some old boards that they set up for shelves, which meant that instead of lying on the ground unnoticed, the books were sold and brought in precious money for Pet Rescue.
Margaret has taught pharmacology to nursing students for 33 years, the last 20 at Beth Israel School of Nursing. She and Joe have been spending winters in Port Charlotte, Florida since 2002. While in Florida she does volunteer work at a pharmacy sponsored by St. Vincent de Paul Society which makes medica-tions available to those who can’t afford them.
She says she likes volunteering with Pet Rescue because she likes being with people, doing things to help animals. She is in awe of the work Pet Rescue does and loves to read the newsletters and emails about our successes. She was especially touched by the way volunteers came together to try to find Annie, a small dog who escaped from her adopter and was missing for a couple of weeks.
Besides the Maras, the Antalecs are our biggest donors. Margaret says she likes to donate to Pet Rescue because she knows the money goes directly to the animals. She makes her donations in memory of KellieAnne, a beautiful white cat with limited eyesight she adopted in 1996. KellieAnne, whom she says was her soul mate, died of renal failure in 2007 and she doesn’t want her to be forgotten.
Pet Rescue is proud to honor such generous and enthusiastic supporters.
