Congratulations to our New Honourary Members!

Congratulations to Helen Weeks, Mary Dolynchuk and Mary Pemberton (absent) on their selection as Honourary Members of the Edmonoton Art Club, in recognition of

their long active membership and outstanding service to the club.

Critique Corner June 9, 2016notes by Betty Dean

Jan Fraser introduced this month’s critic, Kim Fjordbotten, owner of The Paint Spot, winner of Best Art Store in Edmonton 17 times. The Paint Spot won the Mayor’s Innovative Support for the Arts in 2002, and Kim, herself, has won a YWCA Women of Distinction Award (2012). The Paint Spot was nominated this year for the Mayor’s Award for Sustaining Support for the Arts. Kim is very proud of being Past President of the International Art Materials Trade Association.

Kim has a BFA, and stated her particu-lar love of work that shows materials that ‘sing’, and show the qualities of the medium used.

1.Stunning piece with bold colours. Very strong composition. The eye wan-ders, then stops. You might add a little brightness to interrupt. The shadows are nicely done.

2. NudeUsed a live model. Fabric is fabulous, and drapped to give solidity to the box the model is sitting on. Highlights on the figure’s back will make it look less ‘soft’. Shades of yellow green vs. blue green may contribute to sense of dis-tance of the back wall. Some concern over the rendering of the left hand, however it is incomplete and currenly

just the underpainting. When shadows are darkened some of the hand will be lost in shadowns (artist). Artist wants to achieve a relaxed pose.

3. Irises

The bright colours are great. The work at the top is a good example of how the materials have been allowed to ‘work’. Consider adding very dark spots in parts of the bottom section.

4. Portrait

This is being done for the Paint Spot portrait show. Re. the hair, treat more as a shape, breaking it up more on the forehead, showing more skin. Re. the nose, try turning it upside down or

block off the rest of the face viewing just the nose. Under the nose needs to be almost as dark as the eyes. Also bring the hair down on one side so that it is not so central. The eyes need a bit of highlighting. Use zinc white to build up areas (more transparrent). Artist used a ‘skin’ as well as interferance colours.(see note on page 5 for artist’sprocess)

5. GardenerBeautifully done. The face has been treated harmoniously with the entire painting. The eye goes to the flowers but they do not take over the painting. Artist wanted to understate the flowers because the intention is for a portrait. The descriptive pose with the plants adds to the impact of the portrait.

6. Flower marketThe wide horizontal canvas works well. This is the best composition on that size and shape canvas. Artist asked for advice with the flowers. Suggestion to go dark, imagine a tree casting a shadow keeping the figures and closest flowers bright. Use dark shadows and bold strokes - one stroke, one shadow.Referenced Tom Lynch’s work.

7. Garden ChairNice perspective, with the chair show-ing ‘wobbley’ look. Shadows could be darker. there are lots of little things to get in and look at.

8. Boat with Pelicans

Painted on linen gives a nice texture. Done from a photo from Mexico. Nice horizon line with the perspective working. Could use more drama with

shadows, but that depends on the time of day. The pyramid of pelicans contribues well to the good composition.

9. Buildings with alley waysIrrecgular spacing of stairs is nice, as is the lighting in the sky. Consider whether or not the windows should be darker. The viewer needs something to look at - eg. clothes lines? powerlines? Adding them would also add to perspective.

10. Watercoulour buildingsKim would like to see this done as a series. It is a poetic painting, very nicely done. Interpretive work, with windows left. Perspective is ‘equally wanky’.

11. Mixed medium water bubbles (or tree if upside down?)Where is the resting place? Maybe ‘help’ the eye by leading it to the rest-ing place with a few small darks details. Done with resist and acrylic, then white highlight. Upside down may be more contemplative.

12. Poppies on ‘evolon’ paper (see notes on page 4 re. evolon paper)Done on medium weight evolon paper, using a very light touch. With the light-est weight it still bleeds through. The texture of the fibre is very interesting. You can fold it and it will correct. If you wet it, it will not wrinkle. Fades when used with watercolour. Available in sample packages.

13. Abstract from pouringReferenced drawing of Vincent Van Gogh. Lovely marks in foreground and background. Artist poured colour and let it evolve; helps break away from usual processes. Kim found the small spaces really added to the piece.

14. MaskStarted as just the mask, then built the frame on it. Used acrylic, sand and gesso with wire and duct tape so it holds the shape. Being monochromatic adds to its success. May want to add graph-ite touches for detail. The acrylic may

bubble when the leaves are added.

15. Dove

Shows the love of paint. Needs to be big. In a small piece it gets too busy. You run out of space for all the detail. By working with a palette knife you don’t get too precise. Would be a great series. With love of paint vs. realism, it is hard to know which will dominate.

16. Three treesLike the colour of the bark, showing the roundness of the trunks. Space between the trees need to be joined. Think of a tree off the side of the canvas to create more shadows on the right hand side. Add some darker spots along the hori-zon. Many colours in the snow and the painter’s strokes are very nice.

17. Landscape

Painting shows a nice time of day. Needs to add darkened area behind the tree to help it stand out; or darken the tree. If your mind has to think too hard, artist needs to do something to give a hint. Don’t touch the sky, it is harmoni-ous and beautifully done.

18. Horizontal landscapeLovely, unique colours. Does not need to be darker at the bottom. The evenness gives it a really peaceful feel. Consider it done! Could try it again but colours reversed; also try different angle of brush strokes.

19. Landscape

Harmonious composition. Wants to look at it for along time. Used paper

made from stone. Looking at the rocks, may need more indication of a path, perhaps with more darks, Or darker be-hind the right yellow. Try using ‘media acetate’ - put if over the painting then add darks to see how it looks.

20. Milk JugCommemorative piece. Shows more than 4 scenes. Perfect for a tribute piece, shows the relationship between the man and dog. Likes the gold tinge on the dog for highlight. Milk jug was prepared ahead of time before painting.

21. LandscapeShows a misty morning, nicely done. Needs something to bring attention to the figure - not more work on the figure but perhaps ripples, a rock or shadow so that he stands out more.

Scholarship ReportsThree scholarships were presented in June of 2015, with the requirement that each recipient present a report on how the scholarship funds were used.

Rhea Jensen and Patricia Kerek each received the Card/Alling Scholarship; Penny Lamnek received the Mildred Nelson Scholarship. Penny and Trish were absent at the June meeting, but Rhea expressed her appreciation of the scholarship and shared her experiences.

FYI from Kim Fjordbotten, this month’s critic:‘evolon’ paper• comes in 3 weights including 6’ x

80’, great for murals; is fabric but used as paper.

• recommended for acrylic. Gesso it first unless you are using it for print making.

• Available in sample packages.

The painging shown was done on a medium weight of evolon, using a very light touch. With the lightest weight it still bleeds through. The texture of the fibre is very interesting. You can fold it and it will correct. If you wet it, it will not wrinkle. Fades when used with watercolour.

“Thank you to the Edmonton Art Club for honouring me with the Mil-dred Nelson Scholarship. I was indeed pleased to receive this Scholarship and have used the money to support a trip to Revelstoke and beyond where I was able to do some plein air painting, also took photos with the intention of using them as reference for paintings I plan to do in the future. In addition to the lovely trip, I was able to attend three

art classes and hope to attend several more. I was also able to purchase some art supplies.

Thank you all again, it was deeply appreciated. Have a great summer, hope to see you at the meeting in Sep-tember.”

Rhea Jensen

22. BatikBeautiful complexity. Wax and special paints used on silk. Lots of layers. Va-riety of line and weight very well done. Nice horizontal pattern. Sometimes these are hung in a shadow box frame rather than under glass so the nature of the fabric shows. Lots of planning and sketching is done ahead of time.
