DepartmentofGeneralServicesRecognizes26DCschoolsforpromotingrecycling
(Washington DC)—The Department of General Services (DGS) congratulates the 26 Districtschoolsthatparticipatedinthe2016DCRecycleRight!Competition,whichispartoftheOfficeoftheStateSuperintendentofEducation’s(OSSE)GrowingHealthySchoolsMonthcelebrationinOctober.The second annual competition was inspired by the Green Schools Alliance’s Green CupChallenge.Duringthecompetition,studentsinbothDistrictColumbiaPublicSchools(DCPS)anda DC public charter school used math skills in a real-world application to conduct weeklyclassroombinsurveysinwhichstudentscountedthenumberofrecyclingandtrashbinsusedcorrectlyandincorrectly.Studentsandteachersthentookactiontoimprovebinsurveyresultsoverthecourseofthecompetition.“We are very proud of the continuing enthusiasm demonstrated by schools across all eightwardsforrecyclingrightintheirschools,andoftheincreasingsophisticationofthestrategiestheyusedtosucceed,”saidGreerGillis,DGSDirector.“Thisyearwesawschoolsbuildonpriorsuccessbyemployingstrategiesidentifiedduringlastyear’scompetition,”saidZachDobelbower,DGSInterimDirectorofSustainabilityandEnergy.“Studentsdemonstratedthetransformativepowerofpeer-to-peerlearning.Asacity,wealsolearnbysharingreplicablesustainabilitystrategieswithpeersacrosstheUnitedStates.”Forexample,SchoolWithoutWalls@Francis-Stevensorganizedstudentrecyclingmonitorsand“recyclingheroes,”whopresentedtoyoungerstudentsaboutcorrectrecyclingprocedures.“Thisisrealmath,realscience,realdevelopmentofasenseofcommunity,andstudentabilitytomakeadifferenceintheirschool,”saidKarinHarrison,theleadteacherforthecompetitionatSchoolWithoutWalls.

Two students at BallouHigh School,which placed 1st inMost Improved, demonstrated theirinitiativebyvolunteeringtopresenttherecyclingprogramtoclassroomsthroughoutBallou.Student recycling clubs and school recycling committees were established throughout theDistrictasaresultofthecompetition.ThestudentrecyclingclubatWilsonHighSchoolstartedwithtwostudentsvolunteeringtoconductbinsurveysduringthefirstweekofthecompetitionandgrewtoanimpressive20studentsbytheendofthecompetition.Tyler Elementary School’s recycling team customized recycling bins and created stickers toreward studentswho recycled correctly. Burroughs Elementary School’s recycling committeeeducatedtheschoolaboutacceptablerecyclableitemsandbeganusingrecyclingsuppliesthatwerepreviouslyintheschool’sstorage.CardozoEducationCampusstudentsadoptedthebinsurveyworksheettosurveybinlabelsandlinersinadditiontocorrectness.Cardozostudentsalsoparticipatedinafulllesson,createdbyteacher Molly Smith, during which they made homemade paper to learn firsthand theimportanceofrecyclingright.Overall, the averageof all schools’ bin surveys increased from65percent correct during thefirstweekofthecompetitionto82percentcorrectduringthelastweek,animprovementof17percentagepoints.Whilemost recycling competitions rewardparticipants for recyclingmorebasedonvolumeorweight, theRecycleRightCompetitionrewardsparticipants for ‘recyclingright’basedonpercentageofcorrectbins,which ismore in linewith theSustainableDCzerowastegoal.Schools that are interested in conducting the competition activity on their own can findinstructionsontheDGS–HealthySchoolspage,here:http://dgs.dc.gov/node/882692.Growing Healthy Schools Month celebrates the D.C.
