Message From Rabbi

Our Jewish Community:

Preserving our Identity, Working with Others

I moved here with two very powerful and very different communal forces at play: (a) Rabbi Haas and I assum-

ing the role as spiritual leader of our respective congregations; and (b) the fracture within the larger Jewish

community that erupted due to the breakdown of dialogue between the Orthodox community and the JEA over

restructuring the community's Jewish pre-school

It has been wonderful working collaboratively with Rabbi Haas strengthening Shalom School. We have both

made a commitment to be at every single session on Sundays and Wednesdays. We are working strategically

with the school's Principal, Eva Locker, to strengthen the educational components for older kids.

This year already, Rabbi Haas and I have led the eighth and ninth grade classes on Jewish outings; and, we have

shared the responsibility of teaching the sixth grade on Wednesdays and the seventh grade on Sundays. We

plan to build on these successful programs next year. We also just celebrated our joint Purim celebration which

was great fun and a sign of the strength of our united communities. Through these efforts, I am confident that

we will attract unaffiliated Jewish families to our Jewish community.

There is a tangible optimism in our respective communities that is strengthening each congregation individually

and as a united force. While we need to maintain our congregation's distinct identities, we are working together

to make Judaism meaningful and relevant to future generations. On a personal note, it is wonderful to work

with another rabbinic colleague and friend, especially in a small city.

I have also been actively supportive of the educational initiatives at Rambam. The relationship has been mutual

and fruitful. When I first moved here, Esther Rabhan, the school's Director, invited me to meet with the entire

staff of the Jewish studies department. We have built upon this relationship since then. I have been invited on

numerous occasions to serve as a Jewish resource for the school -- from writing bulletin articles to speaking at

an assembly. I regularly visit Rambam and make an extra effort to spend time with students from our congrega-

tion.

As a result of this budding symbiotic relationship, many other connections have developed between our com-

munities. The Shalom School held a joint after-school youth program with Rambam. Rabbi Lob, BBJ's Youth

Director, hosted one of our Shalom School eighth and ninth grade programs about the Jewish movements at

BBJ, and he also met with the leadership of Shalom School to discuss other ways to collaborate in order to

strengthen Jewish education within our larger Savannah community.

On a personal level, Adina and I have developed relationships with numerous people from the Orthodox com-

munity, especially the Kollel, from the moment we arrived here. All of these connections have been especially

welcome and vital in maintaining a positive relationship during this period of tension in our larger community.

As the new JEA pre-school opens up, serious concerns have been expressed about the future of the unity of our

community. Some people predict that the relationship between our communities will continue to erode until we

have totally isolated ourselves from one another. We can't predict the future or control the outcome, we can

only take responsibility for our part in the relationship.

While we must maintain the strength and legitimacy of our perspective as Conservative Jews, let us seek oppor-

tunities to reach out, specifically as members of our congregation, to friends and relatives in the Orthodox com-

munity. Let us take the initiative to do what is good for us and good for the community and consciously main-

tain the connection, looking for broader opportunities for our congregations to collaborate in areas in which we

agree.

For example, Rabbi Slatus, Rabbi Haas, and I met with a representative from AIPAC to discuss ways to

strengthen Savannah's connection to Israel. The preservation of the State of Israel is one of the many values that

we all share. Yet Israel is also one of the greatest symbols of our divisions today as Jews. Can we learn how to

build a meaningful Jewish society together? The answer remains to be seen, but let us continue to try to do so

in Savannah, Georgia.

As we march down the road of redemption from Purim to Pesach, may we take pride in and develop our own

identity as Conservative Jews. From this place of strength, let us continue to embrace our Jewish brothers and

sisters, however they express their Jewish identity, Reform or Orthodox. God willing, may the dignity and re-

spect that we show others foster a healthy collaboration with members of our sister congregations and

strengthen us as a united Jewish community.

A MessAge FroM our President’s desk …………

Dear Fellow Congregants,

I hope everyone is planning to attend our upcoming Semi-Annual Congregational Meeting to appoint 2 members to the nominating

committee. Additionally, we will be discussing and voting on a proposed change to our constitution that was passed at the February

Board meeting concerning interfaith familys’ membership in our synagogue.

These proposed changes are an attempt to address a demographic group in our synagogue and in the community at large, to see if there

were things the congregation could do within existing Halacha to make interfaith families more comfortable in our synagogue. These

proposed changes have been thoroughly discussed at the committee level and at the Board level with input from the Keruv committee

and Rabbi Barkan and with discussions with Rabbi Charles Simon of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club, who spoke here previously

on including interfaith couples in our synagogue. As most of you know the Rabbi has started a very exciting conversion class that will

be only one part of the synagogue efforts to be more welcoming. Although, this will be a new approach at our synagogue I hope each of

you will come with an open mind and an open heart so that every person at Agudath Achim can feel welcome as a part of our AA fam-

ily. I know these changes will be challenging but we must grow and change and I know that each of you have the best interest of the

Agudath Achim and with your help and guidance we will become a vibrant and spiritual community together.

The proposed change is as follows:

PROPOSED CONSTITUTION

Membership

Section 1. Any Jewish person (as verified by the Rabbi of the Congregation) who is at least 18 years of age and of good moral character,

shall, upon written application and approval by the Board of Directors , be admitted to membership in the Congregation. Non-Jewish

persons may be admitted to membership as specified in Section 2 below.

Section 2. There shall be 3 types of membership as follows:

A) Family Membership

1. Such membership shall be offered to married couples both of whom are Jewish, and their unmarried dependent children.

2. Such membership shall be offered to married couples, one whom is Jewish and the other is not, and their unmarried dependent chil-

dren. The Non-Jewish member of the couple shall be considered a full voting member, permitted and encouraged to participate in all

Congregational activities, to the extent permissible under Jewish (Halacha) law as determined by the Rabbi of the Congregation. Only

Jewish persons may serve on the Board of Directors, as Chairman of a Committee of the Congregation, or on the Chevra Kadisha Com-

mittee or on the Ritual Committee.

3. In the event of divorce or death, the Non-Jewish adult will be eligible to apply for a special membership pursuant to subsection C

below.

B.) Individual Membership

Such Membership shall be offered, upon written application and approval by the Board of Directors, to Jewish persons who are unmar-

ried as well as to Non-Jewish persons whose pre-existing Family Membership requires reclassification due to the death or divorce of the

Jewish spouse. An Individual membership may be offered to a Jewish person who is married to a non-Jewish spouse. An individual

membership may include the individual’s unmarried dependent children who are Jewish.

C) Special Membership

Such membership, including without limitation, non-resident memberships and associate memberships, may be offered to Jewish per-

sons, or non-Jewish persons whose pre-existing Family Membership required reclassification due to divorce or death of a Jewish

spouse, on such terms and conditions, with rights and privileges as the Board Of Directors may establish, provided that special members

shall not be entitled to vote or be counted in a quorum at Congregational meetings. They shall nevertheless, have the right to attend and

participate in such meetings.

From the mind oF motti………. Shalom Friends,

Shul is a place that many people are connected to through their life cycle.

Jews gather in Shul for their Brit, Bat Mitzvah, Weddings and Funerals. Well, lately we have had

many of those Happy events: Leila Kyriacos’ bat mitzvah and Gerald Goldstein’s Bar Mitzvah, a

baby naming for our new Members Jenny and Aaron Tillinger and soon David Devaro, Uri and

Shani Locker and then Jami Goldstein … I have been here such a long time and don’t remember

a time when we have had so many Smachot (no complaints keep them coming)

Being here and celebrating all those Smachot is real fun, listening to the beautiful speeches of

those kids and seeing the happiness of the families can bring tears to the eyes of even the tough-

est man. But there is something more to it. Celebrating those life events in the shul is a statement.

By doing it you are declaring where you belong, you are announcing who your extended family

is and it is very encouraging that many people are choosing us. After all, if you have had your

brit your bar/bat mitzvah and you get married this becomes your Jewish address and your Jewish

home. Whatever you do after that depends on you but this is a great start.

In few weeks we will be celebrating Passover. Pesach is a lot about the same thing, connecting to

you, connecting to the big Jewish family who is present now and to those who lived before us.

In Israel were I came from you don’t have a choice on pesach you

have to eat Matza it’s not that easy to find bread, but here we have

a choice so choose right and be part of us.

see you in shul

Shalom from Sisterhood....

It is the time to think about changes--traditional status quo or updated innovation. The survey

that went in the mail in late December produced only 6 written and 4 verbal responses. While I

appreciated the responses I did receive because all represented valuable input and volunteers, that

small number is not what you would call a representation of the Sisterhood or Synagogue mem-

bership. Unfortunately, it is what I did not receive that spoke the loudest.

My goal for Sisterhood when I became President this year was to see changes where needed to

bring new members and leaders to the forefront and yet still offer many of the events or programs

that generated a healthy participation. It has become evident that I cannot accomplish that. We

have done less programming and fundraising this year and that not only hurts Sisterhood but lim-

its us in what we can offer the Synagogue in time and money. In my mind, the glass is half

empty and it is past time for the discussion of the future of the Sisterhood at AA.

We will have the Torah Fund luncheon in April, and the cookbook will be completed as our fund-

raiser. Beyond that, we do not have the volunteers to participate in planning and preparing an

event whether it is for education, fundraising, or just fun. I am not usually a pessimist, but I am a

realist. A small group of six to ten people cannot continue to do all of the functions of the various

committees that are needed for a successful event.

Before I go out of office this year, I would like to propose a general meeting in April or May to

brainstorm and make decisions of what we want as a future. This will be open to all women

members of the Synagogue--you don’t have to be a Sisterhood member because a big part of the

meeting is to find out why you have not joined Sisterhood. If you are willing to be a part of this,

email or call me. I will start a list of attendees and, hopefully, the list of interested women will be

so many that only a large room will accommodate this meeting. That’s a “glass half-full”

thought.

Until then, I hope you plan to attend the Torah Fund Luncheon

on April 21st. This promises to be a beautiful, heartwarming

event and one you won’t want to miss.

Shalom, Joanna Rich
