Torah and T’filah • Saturdays, 8-9:30 am, LibraryAll are welcome to join this weekly study and conversation group as we continue to explore some of the later books of the Bible. No prior knowledge is necessary. This year: Ezra-Nehemiah, the return from exile and the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Join us every Shabbat morning in the library for our weekly Torah study group. We are currently studying the last books (historically-speaking) in the Hebrew canon. Come learn what happened after the exile, when the Jewish leaders were permitted to return to rebuild Jerusalem and a second Temple. More than a history lesson, we’ll be grappling with politics and power, social change, theology and ritual life, finding the common strands between the past and present.

Page 3: Congregation B’nai Shalom םולש ינב Bulletin › cbs-bulletins › 2017-2018 › ... · 2018-01-22 · February 2018/5778 Published Monthly Volume 4 No. Congregation B’nai

February 2018 Page 3

There are probably two things that I hear more often than any others from our

members when it comes to Jewish ritual. The first is that they find many of the rituals of Judaism beautiful and meaningful, but they don’t participate in them as often as they’d like. The second, which I think is related, is that they wish they felt more confident about participating in Jewish ritual. We have such a long and rich tradition, which is wonder-ful. That tradition, along with a need to get comfortable with Hebrew, and the fact that many within our community didn’t grow up gaining familiarity with Jewish ritual for a variety of reasons, means that it is sometimes difficult to know where to start.

This March I’d like to invite you to join me in a series of evenings called Navigating Jewish Ritual. As you’ll see below, each session is a stand-alone topic, meaning that you can come to just the sessions that you

are most interested in, or sign up for the whole series. These offerings are for anyone — those who are Jewish and those who come from other faith or cultural backgrounds but who want to learn how to participate in Jewish ritual with their families.

Additionally, for those who are Jewish and who can commit to most of the sessions, I invite you to consider putting your newly gained knowledge and skills to use with an adult Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Unlike the work that our teens do, for this celebration you simply need to set a goal for yourself that gets you a step beyond where you currently are in your knowledge and skill. For some that might mean learning the blessings to recite over the Torah. For some it might mean learning how to study and interpret a Torah portion and write a drash (explica-tion) of the portion to deliver at a service. Some might wish to read or chant from the Torah scroll — just a few verses — for the very first

time. You set the goal, and I’ll help you achieve it. We’ve set aside the Friday, May 18 to celebrate your achievements with us.

Adult learning is often a chal-lenge — we often put the priorities of others above ourselves and it is hard to carve out time in our busy lives — but that’s why this course isn’t an “all or nothing.” Come to what you can and take those first steps to make Jewish ritual more accessible and meaningful, gaining the self-confidence to participate in these aspects of Jewish life.

You can sign up on the temple website to help us plan for these sessions.

From Our Family Educator

Hi everyone.January was filled with

some exciting events on the calendar. The Shoresh students (Kindergarten and 1st graders) met on January 21 for their spring family education event where we focused on making a child’s day special. We made some great goody bags and wrapped hundreds of boxes of crayons for Birthday Wishes while also being entertained with stories and music.

By the time you read this Bulletin, 2/3 WAFTY (2nd and 3rd graders) should have had their incredible Faux Shul-in, with shul-in activities but without the sleepover compo-nent. The planned activities: Big Joe the Storyteller with lots of ice-breaker and Israeli games, Havdalah with Rabbi Joe, pizza and ice cream sundaes, and a movie.

In February, WAFTY Lite (Anaf students in 4th and 5th grade) are

scheduled for their annual Shul-in event. We start with tubing at Ski Ward (with our own heated tent), followed by games and activities, ice cream sundaes, movie, Shabbat crafts, and more.

I am pleased to announce our new policy that camp scholar-ships are available for all over-

night Jewish camps.Helping your children build their

communities of Jewish friends is so important. One way to do this is to have your children participate in our Youth Groups: 2/3 WAFTY for our 2nd and 3rd graders, WAFTY Lite for our 4th and 5th graders, WAFTY 678 for our 6th through 8th graders, and Senior WAFTY for our high school students. Our Youth Groups offer a variety of social, educational, religious, and social action programs.

Another way to strengthen Jewish connections is to send your children to Jewish overnight camps. The experiences gained are invaluable. Please contact me to learn more.

On that note, camp scholarship applications are now available. To help send your child to camp, there are two non-need-based camp schol-arships available to our members in good standing. Both of these schol-arships are being provided to any camper who is enrolled in and reg-ularly attends our religious school (80% attendance), and will attend an approved Jewish camp program.

1) Congregation B’nai Shalom is pleased to announce that camp scholarships from the Steve Meltzer Youth Summer Experience Scholar-ship Fund are available to campers attending any not-for-profit Jewish overnight camp with strong Jewish

educational and experiential compo-nents, and their Israel trips.

The Steve Meltzer Youth Summer Experience Scholarship Fund is supported by your direct donations, by the proceeds from registering your Stop & Shop Card for their A+ program http://stopandshop.com/savings-and-rewards/rewards-program/aplus/, as well as by the fundraising the YELL (Youth, Education, and

Lifelong Learning) Committee does. Please consider supporting this Scholarship Fund.

2) The Jewish Federation of Cen-tral Massachusetts offers generous scholarships to first-time campers, with the support of the Freelander Family Jewish Camping Initiative. This fund provides four $1500 scholarships for campers in grades 2 through 5 who are attending Jewish summer camp for the first time.

In addition, the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts has a lim-ited pool of scholarships for resident camps.

To apply for any of these scholar-ships, please visit our temple’s web-site at http://www.cbnaishalom.org/learning/urj-summer-camp/ to down-load the instructions and applica-tions at the bottom of the page. You may also pick them up at the temple

office.The Steve

Meltzer and JFCM Freelander scholarship appli-cations should be submitted to Debbi Morin by Thursday, Febru-ary 8, 2018. The Federation scholar-ship application should be submit-ted directly to them by Thursday,

February 15, 2018.Please note that if your

child was consecrated at Con-gregation B’nai Shalom, then you received a gift certificate towards a URJ camp.

You may also apply to the One Happy Camper Scholar-ship http://www.jewishcamp.org/happy-camper-eligibility which offers up to $1000 for first time campers.

If you have any questions about any of these scholarships, or if you can’t find your gift certificate, please contact me.

Mazel Tov! It’s time to celebrate. Congregation B’nai Shalom has hit the first of its milestones for the Life & Legacy Program, which is our

program that we kicked off last year along with the Grinspoon Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts. Our Life & Legacy program is helping us to build a future financial foundation for the congregation. Through this program, we are asking for your consideration to make a legacy commitment to Congregation B’nai Shalom — which may be designat-ing a portion of your IRA or naming the congregation as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy.

We have our first eighteen commitments and there-fore have met our formal target for the first year of the program — although we would like to reach twenty-five for the first year of our program.

I would like to thank Marvin Silver, Esq., and Adam Sachs, CFP, who led a brotherhood breakfast presen-tation for the congregation in December, educating us on issues related to estate and financial planning. If you would like a copy of the presentation materials, please email Steve Winer at [email protected]. And many thanks to Jim Wilner and the Brotherhood for extending the invitation to lead that Brotherhood breakfast session.

Sidenote: One interesting fact Marvin presented for those of you with children over the age of eigh-teen who are leaving for college or living inde-pendently — because of the healthcare privacy laws, you should ask your young adult to sign a health care proxy. In a situation where your child is in an accident, your child’s physicians will not be able to discuss his/her condition with you without one.

In regards to Life & Legacy, by reaching our first eighteen commitments, we receive our initial seed money of $1800 back from the program. We also receive an incentive grant of $5000. This will help us with future programming — and as we look toward our 40th year anniversary of Congregation B’nai Shalom — and ongo-ing fundraising planning efforts.

If you have questions about Life & Legacy, please contact me, Steve Winer, or Adam Sachs at [email protected]. To obtain a copy of the Life & Legacy commitment form, please download it at http://www.cbnaishalom.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/declaration-of-intent-Fillable.pdf.

A Bomb Cyclone of a Thank YouAt the time of this writing, we have dried out the carpets and have started removing drywall to replace the damage throughout the building. We’ve had water damage mitigation professionals through and the insurance providers work-ing on the claims. Through it all, Steve Winer has been there — until 3 am one morning while water was being drained from the main lobby hall and the temple offices, and then again early the next (same) day. Steve has been working tirelessly to make sure that the damage to the building is minimized, our books, artifacts, and supplies are moved out of the construction zones, and that the restoration work is planned in a way to minimize disrup-tion to our activities and classrooms.

I owe a super huge thank you to Steve. He’s been on top of the issues and calling on professionals to get ahead of the next steps in the process. I know that we’ll be asking a few of you with expertise in this area to lend yours as we think through any long-term mitigation plans for building maintenance. In the meantime, if you see Steve, please give him a hearty thank you!

From Our Temple Administrator

So…how was your New Year’s? Mine was won-derful and relaxing — until about 6 pm New Year’s Day. By now you’ve all heard about the synagogue

building mayhem caused by our frigid temperatures, and may have already seen the mitigation work being done to remove damaged walls and ceilings. It will be another few weeks until we’re back at one hundred percent, but we’re making the best of it. Thanks to the staff who have been wonderfully flexible during challenging working conditions and to the many congregants who’ve volun-teered to help. We’re engaging many of you in planning for the restoration process and upgrades to our insula-tion and monitoring systems, which have been in place in the ‘old wing’ since its construction in the ‘80s and the ‘new wing’ since the late 90s/early 2000s.

In addition, I wanted to fill you in on what I consider to be an exciting change in the way we do business here at CBS. We’ve been using an old platform for our synagogue database for almost eleven years, and all of us know how much technology has advanced during that time.

The new comprehensive system is cloud-based, and used by more than eight hundred synagogues around the world. It is fully integrated with all our systems so that, when you log into the system, all of your informa-tion will be prepopulated, and you can renew your membership, sign up for an event, or register your kids for school. The system will replace many of the separate systems we are currently using for our website, email, billing, pastoral management, calendaring, event management, and the like. We’re excited to move into this new era, and, of course, will be keeping you updated on its progress this spring with the expectation of going live in a couple of months.

Learn to chant Torah!Thursdays: March 8, 15, 29 April 5, 12, 26; May 3, 10

7:30 – 9:00 pm

You’ve watched other people chant Torah at a Friday night Torah service. They make it look easy, you think. I could never do that. But you can. If you can read Hebrew, you can chant Torah. Torah cantillation uses trope, a system of symbols organized into families. Using the V’ahavta and other passages, you will learn to decode the symbols, and chant Torah text. The class will begin with a brief look at the history of trope, its function, and its structure. We will then jump right in and start chanting. To register, email Cantorial Soloist Sharon Brown Goldstein at [email protected].

Brotherhood News – Breakfasts and Dr. Murray Spiegel

On Sunday, January 7, about a dozen men of CBS Brotherhood braved the frigid early January cold for a warm brunch at Jack’s Abby Brewery

in Framingham. The beer flights at 11:00 am probably didn’t hurt to warm things up a bit more. Following brunch, we all toured the brewery facility and learned about the brewing process that Jack’s Abby employs. It was a nice outing and a chance for the guys to spend some quality time together outside of the synagogue environment.

Brotherhood Breakfast on Feb 11 at 9 am Be sure to join us in the Social Hall on Sunday, February 11 at 9:00 am for our next Brotherhood bagels and lox breakfast. If you will be joining us for the break-fast, RSVP to [email protected]; the cost is $5 for Brotherhood members (free to members at the spon-sor/benefactor level), or $12 for non-members/guests.

Special Presentation on Feb 11 at 10 am

Then, in the Social Hall on Sunday, Februrary 11 at 10:00 am, we are delighted to have as our special

guest speaker, Dr. Murray Spiegel. See the box on page 8 for details of this special presentation. Dr. Spiegel’s presentation is free and open to the entire congregation, but RSVP here to help our planning: http://www.cbnaishalom.org/300-unforgettable-seders/.

Brotherhood Breakfast on Mar 11 at 9 am Please save the date for our March breakfast and gather-ing on Sunday, March 11 at 9:00 am, program TBD.

Brotherhood is always looking for new members. You do not need to be a CBS member or Jewish to partici-pate in Brotherhood events or become a Brotherhood member. To join or renew, go to www.cbnaishalom.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/SisterBrotherFY18-Fillable.pdf, or contact one of the officers. See the Brotherhood page at www.cbnaishalom.org/community/brotherhood for the list of officers.

B’nai Shalom Book Group for January, February, and MarchOn Monday, February 12, please join us to discuss My Jewish Year: 18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew by Abi-gail Pogrebin. Rabbi Suri Krieger will join us as guest facilitator. Pogrebin created this insightful yet entertain-ing work to increase her understanding of the Jewish calendar. She celebrated all holidays, immersing herself into their historical traditions and rituals. Peppered with writings from rabbis and Jewish pundits, the book is a good way to learn more about how Jewish holidays are celebrated in 21st century America.

On Monday, March 26, we will discuss And After the Fire by Lauren Belfer. This novel is inspired by events in 1783 to present, involving a European and Ameri-can woman at each end of the time period. In 2010, a long-hidden Johann Sebastian Bach musical masterpiece is found, and thought to conceal the manuscript of a Bach anti-Jewish cantata. The search for the rightful owner and the unraveling of the music’s journey through time are this mystery’s topics.

On Monday, May 14, we will discuss Suddenly, Love, a story of a unique friendship by Israeli author Aharon Appelfeld. Ernst, a Ukrainian Red Army veteran, dis-claimed his Jewish roots when he was a young commu-nist who persecuted Jews. Now 70 and in failing health, he is writing his memoirs, coming to the terms with his past beliefs, and seeking forgiveness. He engages Irena, age 36, whose deceased parents were Holocaust survi-vors, as his caregiver. Ernst and Irena form an inspiring bond that expands our understanding of forgiveness (excerpted from www.goodreads.com).

The February 12 meeting will be held at The Wil-lows in Westborough. The March 26 and May 14 meetings will be held at B’nai Shalom. Meetings start at 7 pm. All B’nai Shalom members are welcome. For more information, please contact Barbara Barry at [email protected].

We Could Use Some Help with the Bulletin

We now print the Bulletin in-house. Once it’s printed, we put together a small group to fold, tab, and label the Bulletins for mailing. We could use some more volunteers. This task is a couple of hours during the day usually the third week of the

month. We will send out an email specifying day and time, and if you can make it, you let us know. If you are willing to get asked, please email Lori Zembruski at [email protected].

Membership Social Clubs – Next Hike on February 4We had five hearty souls on our first CBS snowshoe hike on the Milford Upper Charles Trail on January 7. In spite of temperatures in the single digits and one broken snowshoe, we had a great time and even worked up a sweat. Our next trek will be on February 4. We have several possible places we can choose from, depending on the weather and the desires of the group. Intrigued? Email Pat, [email protected], for more info. See you on the trail!

On January 20, eleven members of our “What’s Playing” group became CBS Sleuths at a Murder in the Mansion – Clue Live event at the MIT Endicott House. CBS Sleuths was one of the five teams out of thirteen who solved the mystery. For the record, it was Mrs. White with the lead pipe in the first floor foyer.
