One of the primary activi-ties associated with relig-ion is prayer. Webster’s dictionary defines prayer as “an address (as a peti-tion) to God or a god in word or thought”. This definition is certainly ac-curate however it is a non-comprehensive definition of prayer. Our liturgy con-tains petitions and ad-dresses to God however the prayer experience (T’Filah in Hebrew) is much more than simply asking or begging God for our individual needs. If this were the sole function of prayer, prayer would then be inconsistent with the notion that God knows our needs and desires to fulfill those needs. Why would God need our shop-ping list if God knows our needs better than us? Why would Avinu She-Ba-Shamayim (our heavenly parent) need us to petition for parental assistance? Does any good parent wait for a petition from their children or do we, as par-ents, do our best to work in the interest of our chil-

dren.

Prayer - L’Hitpallel

The Hebrew verb for prayer is L’Hitpallel. Gen-erally this verb is trans-lated to pray, however the literal translation is to judge oneself. It is signifi-cant that this is a reflexive verb. When we stand in prayer requesting God’s

grace, mercy and protec-tion the process of self evaluation is initiated. Each time we ask for the goodness and mercy of God, we are forced to ex-amine our own lives to determine if we merit such treatment. When we ask for God’s forgiveness, we are forced to evaluate those areas of our life of which we may not be proud. The concept of prayer as a springboard to self improvement is an essential component of the

prayer journey.

Prayer - Avodah

The Talmud (tractate Taanit) tells us that prayer is the service or work of the heart. Prayer in the sense of service is an in-spirational process that connects words with ac-tion. Our liturgy incorpo-rates values and philoso-phies designed to inspire action. We discuss the attributes of God in a con-text that facilitates our ac-tions consistent with the image of God in our lives. When we translate reli-gious values into action we are putting prayer into mo-tion. Words of prayer (service of the heart) are brought to fruition through action (service of the

body).

Prayer – L’Tofel

Tosfot, in his commentary on the Talmud, discusses the concept of prayer as a

binding or attaching ex-perience. L’Tolfel is liter-ally translated “to bind”. This concept is broad based as it includes multi-ple facets. We have all heard the expression, “The family who prays together, stays together”. Family is the most essential and ba-sic community unit. Shared values, hopes, aspi-rations and dreams are the foundation upon which marriages and families are built. Reaffirming our foundational values, dreams, hopes and aspira-tions strengthen the family unit. On a broader scale, communities who come toge ther in prayer strengthen and challenge each other. We come to-gether with different per-spec t i ve s , d i f f e r en t dreams, and varied value structures. Over time we learn about each other, strengthen each others dreams, and challenge each other regarding our values and our spiritual direction. This binding through prayer is an essen-tial strengthening process

in the prayer journey.

As we approach the High Holiday season, may we experience the benefit of our prayer journey as a community family. May our prayers inspire us to live more meaningful and spiritual lives within the greater community of hu-

manity.

With Torah Blessings,

Rabbi David Ross Senter

As I write this it is the day after the Shabbat in the Park. I was glad that many of you braved the potential for rain to spend time in Hirsch-field Park and enjoy a meal together, camara-derie and of course prayer. Those are the mainstay of Congrega-tion Beth Shalom. I think I have the right order. Food, schmoosing

and of course prayer.

I also want to thank all of you who stepped up to support the Musical Shabbat program after the initial funding was withdrawn. I had only asked for a small dona-tion from a lot of people to make it happen and as far as I can tell today, the funding was more than adequate. I thank

you.

The above is an example of what I ask all of the membership to do, small things such as donations, and work on one project for a committee. Volun-teer to help out at a function. Help plan functions. Bring in a neighbor for services. Give your suggestions to those who are on the

board for things you

would like to see us do.

We will be getting our statements prior to the High Holidays to make sure that we are eligible to have seats. For the information of all our members and friends, your dues, contributions and any other financial arrangement can be made with credit cards. Get in touch with the office and talk to Bea about it. For those who do not wish to pay with the cards it is possible to pay either on a monthly basis, even though it does add to the office work or you can pay quarterly. For those who truly are financially hard pressed, this year due to the economy, please let me know and I will set up a meeting with the hardship committee to help you out for the

membership.

Needless to say the economy has had an im-pact on our finances and we have a greater deficit then ever before. For those of you, who are in better financial situa-tions, if you can, pledge a few dollars more —

I am back as Men’s Club

President and want to

let everyone know I am

looking forward to a

wonderful new 2 year

term full of

programming, fun and

learning. My goal is to

make the Men’s

Club something for all

men to enjoy and to

bring fathers and their

children to the Temple.

We have had a rough

year here at CBS. There

is no hiding from that

and a lot of bad feelings

have developed. That

being said I hope to put

that all in the past. A

rabbi once told me that

you should focus on the

things that you can

control and not waste

time on the things you

can’t. We can’t control

what happened in the

past. That is water

under the bridge. What

all of us can control is

what happens to CBS

and the Men’s Club in

the future. We have our

work cut out for us no

doubt, but with your

help I know we can

make it work. What I

need from you is to

join Men’s Club, come

to meetings and get

involved. Give me your

ideas of what programs

and events you want to

happen. Even if you

are not a member yet I

want your ideas, as

Uncle Sam says, “We

want you.”

Now, you may ask

yourself, what is in it

for me to be a part of

Men's Club? Perhaps

you are wondering if

you want to get

involved. You may

even look over your

busy schedule and

wonder if you have

time for us. The

answer is a sense of

community fun,

spending time learning

together, representing

men in our shul and

our community. Some

of our time can reach

out the those of us with

children and sharing

time together.

Involvement with the

temple will give them a

sure foundation. There is

so much that we can be.

Here is the fun part of it—

when I went to my last

Men’s Club convention

we were standing up on

the tables waving napkins

as flags as we concluded

the meal with prayer.

There was also the singing

and the friendships that

developed. This is what I

want to see for our

congregation. Please

contact me to join the

Men’s Club and give me

your ideas.

and the world community that Israel can not take risks for peace that will endanger her survival as a Jewish homeland. A safe Israel remains at the center of concern for our congregations. The threat of a nuclear Iran – We support the President’s program of preserving open communication with all nations, friend and foe, as the best way to make progress towards security and peace world-wide. We are alarmed, however, by recent developments in Iran which indicate that the radical anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and anti-American positions taken by Iran’s President do represent the thinking of the top level of Iran’s leadership. A nuclear Iran represents a fundamental threat to the existence of the State of Israel and will spurregional nuclear proliferation threatening all the nations in the region and many in the west. Every effort must be made to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons capabilities. Gilad Shalit – The kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit represents an escalation in the campaign of terror directed against Israel and its families by adding hostage-taking as a weapon in the arsenal of the enemies of peace. June 25th marked 3 years that Gilad has been held captive. Shalit has been denied the right to a Red Cross (ICRC) visitation, which is a violation of international law. The return of prisoners has always been a major value informing Jewish communal life, whether the numbers were large as in the movement to free Soviet Jewry, or small, as in the case of an

(Continued from page 1)

individual soldier. We ask the American diplomats to keep the return of Gilad Shalit and the renunciation of kidnapping on the agenda of conversations with the parties involved in Gaza and Egypt. Darfur – The situation in Darfur, Sudan has touched a raw nerve in our congregations where so many remember the world’s silence during the Shoah. We welcome steps the American government might take to enhance the safety of the people of Darfur and strengthen the African Union and UN forces in the area. DOMESTIC ISSUES Hekhsher Tzedek – A recent initiative of our Conservative movement called Hekhsher Tzedek (ethical food certification) is designed to ensure that kosher food is produced in ways that ensure the rights of workers and the humane treatment of animals. We have developed metrics to facilitate the granting of a seal of ethical certification for food products that meet the standards of Jewish ritual traditions and ethical traditions. Our hope is that this certification will become an important part of the recent move throughout American society towards a deeper awareness of how and what we consume and how sustainability can be integrated into more aspects of our society. Recent government decisions to bring cigarettes under the jurisdiction of the FDA and your family’s decision to model healthy eating and support local agriculture are to be applauded in this regard. Environmental Protection, Climate Policy and Energy Security- Energy independence and the nurturance of

alternative fuel sources has implications for the long term health of our planet and our ongoing desire for a foreign policy that should not be unduly influenced by our need for foreign oil. We support programs that will facilitate new forms of energy development in the United States. We note that Israel continues to do cutting edge work in this field and we hope more joint projects can be developed. Conservation also plays a major role and our institutions will continue to model and encourage “green” building and home based conservation and recycling projects. Affordable Health Care – We support plans to find a solution during the current term of Congress to our nation’s need for quality, affordable health care for all. We recognize that this will involve a number of compromises and we want to know how we can be helpful in developing and selling the emerging program to our communities. Immigration Reform – Our nation is a nation of immigrants and the Jewish community is particularly aware of the marginal position of immigrants and foreign workers. Scripture reminds us over again that we were strangers and that we should understand the plight of the stranger. We support moves towards comprehensive immigration reform and we are prepared to speak out on the subject when it next returns to the national agenda.

night service at the syna-gogue? The air condi-tioning is working well, so you can cool off, par-ticipate in the service, and join us for refresh-ments and pleasant con-versation after the ser-

vices, all at no cost.

Also keep in mind that we are having an Instru-mental music service on Friday night, August 7 at the synagogue. There will be a free hot dog dinner beginning around 6:00 PM, with the ser-vices beginning by 7:30. Please join us for this

different type of service.

Lastly, I ask all of you to keep in mind that summertime is when we have the greatest diffi-culty at getting minyons at our services. So please also consider coming to some other Friday night services during the summer, and also coming to some of our Saturday morning services. Please remem-ber that services on the second and fourth Satur-days of the month are held at Cedar Crest re-tirement village. And that our need for having enough people for min-

SUMMERTIME – AND

THE LIVING IS EASY

As the line goes in the song “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess, “Summertime and the living is easy”. During the summer, we are all occupied with such things as lawn mainte-nance, what to do on our vacations, and on how to save money (in these

tough economic times).

I am hoping that many of you decided to join us at the June 17 picnic dinner and Friday night Sabbath services at Hirshfield Park. (I am writing this before the

event.)

Over the summer, why not join us at a Friday

yons on Saturday morn-ings is greatest for the first, third, and fifth (if applica-ble) Saturdays of the month, which are held at

the synagogue.

I hope that you are all hav-

ing a great summer.

I hope that these sum-mer months have been fun and relaxing for all

of you. I wish that

I had the magic formula to slow down time. It

always goes too fast!

Plans are underway for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year. Reg-istration forms are due now. I will be sending out the Parents’ Hand-book shortly. While the majority of the packet is the same as last year’s, there are new dates, a new calendar and some

other incidental informa-tion that you should take

the time to read.

Just a reminder to please have your child bring his/her books from this

past year in to

class at the beginning of this school year. Some of those books may be used to re-

view last year’s mate-

rial.

I look forward to greet-ing you all again at our Welcome Back Bagels and…. on Sunday, Sep-

tember 13th.

Our 2008-2009 TZEDA-KAH DRIVE for Chai Lifeline’s Camp Simcha is coming to an end on Rosh Hashanah. Please send in any monies that you may have collected over the year. Although you don’t need the actual tzedakah box to make your donation, we still have tzedakah boxes that Chai Lifeline designed for us available. If you haven’t pick yours up yet and would like to have one, please call Bea in the office. They can be picked up during syna-gogue office hours or

during Shabbat services.

We will be having an-other Tzedakah Drive for the 2009-2010 year. We are asking that our Hebrew School students submit their choice of a charitable Jewish or-ganization that we could take collections for. Their choice should be presented to their class-room teacher by the first day of Hebrew School classes on Tuesday, September 15th. We will announce the se-lected charity during

High Holiday services.

We thank you in ad-vance for your support of this most worthwhile

cause.

I would like to thank everyone,

who made donations on my behalf to the temple and other funds, sent cards, called with concern and cheered me up, said prayers for me to recover, and contributed to the im-mense amount of food for Philip and I that will last till next year. All of you have been wonderful and all this love and caring will surely help me heal and get stronger much sooner.

Love and thank you, Ellen Steuer
