rev-el-ing (revacuteel ing) to take great delight in and occasional boisterous merry-making

Rachel Evans a 32 year old researcher for CNN wrote an article back in 2013 that for some reason I saved which tries to answer the question ldquoWhy are millennials leaving the churchrdquo In it she writeshellip

Time and again the assumption among Christian leaders and evangelical leaders in particular is that the key to drawing twenty-somethings back to church is simply to make a few style updates - edgier music more casual services a coffee shop in the fellowship hall a pastor who wears skinny jeans [God help us all] and an updated Web site that includes online giving

What millennials really want from the church is not a change in style but a change in substance

We want an end to the culture wars We want a truce between science and faith We want to be known for what we stand for not what we are against

We want to ask questions that donrsquot have predetermined answers

We want churches that emphasize an allegiance to the kingdom of God over an allegiance to a single political party or a single nation

We want our LGBT friends to feel truly welcome in our faith communities

We want to be challenged to live lives of holiness not only when it comes to sexuality but also when it comes to living simply caring for the poor and oppressed pursuing reconciliation engaging in creation care and becoming peacemakers

You canrsquot hand us a latte and then go about business as usual and expect us to stick around Wersquore not leaving the church because we donrsquot find the cool factor there wersquore leaving the church because we donrsquot find Jesus there

I think shersquos right The church has for so long described Jesus but hasnrsquot sufficiently prescribed him Wersquove ldquotold the old old story of Jesus and his loverdquo but havenrsquot created enough opportunities to serve in Jesus name It may be why the children of these same millennials are emptying out of our Sunday School classrooms and pouring onto soccer and football fields across the country Imagine if soccer leagues just sat the kids in classrooms and only taught them ABOUT soccer and its rules Imagine if they never actually played games never chased the ball in running blobs of kids never even got a chance to kick the ball towards the net with the hopes of hearing someone scream out ldquoGOOOOOOOOOAAAAAALrdquo What good is learning the game if you never get to play it Irsquom directing our program staff to get our kids amp teens back into the game We want to ldquotouch downrdquo pounds of supplies in the Food Bank ldquodo lapsrdquo around the Nursing Home delivering flowers to residents ldquohand offrdquo meals at the Drive Thru Cafeacute and send ldquotravel teamsrdquo into the mission field Itrsquos time to get back in the game people I donrsquot need fans Wersquove got more than enough of them in the pews already I need coaches trainers and athletes Halftimersquos over Letrsquos get out there and kick somehellip In the Spirit

CARE MINISTRY

Reflections on the Quotehellip A monthly column from church member Ruth Jones

Ruth is a retired elementary school teacher is a member of

our Chancel choir and participates in the Card Ministry of

the Care Ministry Team

When the fullness of time had come God sent forth His son

born of a woman to redeem those who were under the law

that we might receive the adoption as sons Galatians 44-5

As wersquore all created by God and Irsquove often

heard it said that we are children of God the

term adoption by God seems confusing

Just as God sent forth His son so has God

sent forth the Holy Spirit into every person who

believes in Christ We are no longer slaves to sin

nor children under the law Our relationship

with the Father has been completed by the

sacrifice of Christ

I think I get it

Itrsquos sort of lie that old song ldquoLove and

marriagehelliphellipyou canrsquot have one without the

otherrdquo How can you be a child of God without

the Holy Spirit to complete you

A while back I met a young man from the

choir of Center Church in Hartford He confided

that he had a very life changing event coming up

very soon He and his wife had been wanting a

family for some time Theyrsquod spent delightful

times picking out names but no baby came to

them In order to fill the longing that they had

for a child they decided to foster a little one It

didnrsquot take long for them to fall head over heels

for a baby boy who from the start pulled at their

heart strings

The court date they had to finalize the

adoption of their son was to fall on his second

birthday They would be a bonded family a

forever gift to parents and child

They kept his birth name putting aside their

choices for Mom Dad and son each had the

syllable ldquoanrdquo in their names It seemed to the

little family to be a quiet message from God that

they were meant to be a family

Their son is of their hearts adopted from the

love of the Holy Spirit in their souls

Lord we ask your blessings on all those who adopt from Your love

in gracious acceptance children programs projects and animals opening up their hearts and showing

your love to the world Amen

Be kinder than

necessary

for every one you meet

is fighting some kind of

battle

Our heartfelt prayers go out to the following family over the passing of a loved one who

entered into the more immediate presence of his Lord and Savior

Karen Myers and Jeff Sevich and their family

over the passing of father and grandfather George

on September 1 in Exeter New Hampshire

formerly of Marlborough George had been a

member of our church since 1972 A service in his

memory was held at our church September 9

SUNDAY SCHOOL

a note from our

Christian Education Director Gwen Lawson

Let There Be Light The earth was a formless void and darkness

covered the face of the deep

ldquoLet There Be Lightrdquo

Let the people remember

Let the sun the moon and the stars break

through the darkness

The day turned to night and darkness

smothered the lifes blood and body of

Christ

ldquoLet There Be Lightrdquo

Let the people remember

Let the taking of the bread and the wine

ignite the life of Christ within you

The night grows longer calling to the souls

from beyond

ldquoLet There Be Lightrdquo

we also hosted Denise Petersonrsquos

Ecclesiastical Council sold apple crumble at

the Hebron Harvest Fair acknowledged Chris

Walzrsquo nine years of service to our church as

Junior Youth Director brought in an

abundance of produce and delivered it all to

Marlborough Food Bank on Harvest Sunday

and had a successful golf tournament

We are blessed to have so many

volunteers who give their time to make sure

that we might receive the adoption as sons Galatians 44-5

Be kinder than

necessary

for every one you meet

is fighting some kind of

battle

rev-el-ing (revacuteel ing) to take great delight in and occasional boisterous merry-making

Page 4: Congregational Church of Marlborough United Church of ... · No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, ... We want our LGBT friends to feel truly welcome in our

rev-el-ing (revacuteel ing) to take great delight in and occasional boisterous merry-making

Be kinder than

necessary

for every one you meet

battle

Christian Education Director Gwen Lawson

Let There Be Light The earth was a formless void and darkness

covered the face of the deep

ldquoLet There Be Lightrdquo

Let the people remember

Let the sun the moon and the stars break

through the darkness

The day turned to night and darkness

smothered the lifes blood and body of

Christ

ldquoLet There Be Lightrdquo

Let the people remember

Let the taking of the bread and the wine

ignite the life of Christ within you

The night grows longer calling to the souls

from beyond

ldquoLet There Be Lightrdquo

Let the people remember

Let the children embrace the spirits and

find joy in the painted faces of the deep

Halloween whether they be giddy or

gruesome

What an exciting and busy

month we just had and it

was quite eventful Whoever said ldquoMany

hands make light workrdquo definitely knew what

they were talking about We got through

September with help from MANY people

Not only did we celebrate Rally Day but

we also hosted Denise Petersonrsquos

Ecclesiastical Council sold apple crumble at

the Hebron Harvest Fair acknowledged Chris

Walzrsquo nine years of service to our church as

Junior Youth Director brought in an

abundance of produce and delivered it all to

Marlborough Food Bank on Harvest Sunday

and had a successful golf tournament

We are blessed to have so many

volunteers who give their time to make sure

our church continues to thrive There are

endless volunteer possibilities throughout the

church and volunteering is such a rewarding

way to give back to the church and the

community

If you would like to know more about

volunteering opportunities feel free to reach

out to me We need many hands working so

that so that the workload does not become

overwhelming for a few
