    What Makes ProtestEffective?

ReutersProtestors gathered in front of the Russian Embassy in

Warsaw, on Aug. 17, to show support for the punk band Pussy

    Riot.

Its an interesting time forprotest. In Russia, a

punk band isjailed for an anti-government performance in a church. Across the United States,

nuns ride a bus to call attention to social issues and illegal immigrantsride to bring focus to their

cause. Meanwhile, Occupy Wall Street continues on city sidewalks and the Tea Party moves to

the corridors of power. Soon the national party convention will attract all varieties of the angry

    and disenchanted.

But what is the difference between a well-attended futile gesture and demonstrations that can

lead to real change, like the Arab Spring protests? What makes protests effective?

Fight the System, but Know How to Make It Work

    Michael Kazin, historian, Georgetown University

You can call for new forms of democracy, but to have political impact quickly,

know how to exploit the forms you already have.

Only Strong Organization Make Protests Work

    Natasha Vargas-Cooper, former union organizer

Political change comes through prolonged organizing, the sort of painstaking work

that few protesters can be bothered with.

A Bit of Drama Stirs Attention, Without AngerSarah Seltzer, pop culture writer

Civil disobedience disrupts our routines to create a 'crisis.' Artistic protest also

    intrigues us with provocative entertainment.
