As Connect Care continues to evolve, so does the refinement of the wave-based Implementation Timeline, which was

first introduced in late 2017, updated in early November 2018, and further updated in late December 2018. A number

of factors are considered in determining when sites across Alberta Health Services (AHS) will go-live / launch. The

original version of the Implementation Timeline was designed using a principles-based approach. Now, further

refinement of implementation planning is taking place with stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) across

the province.

How Each site undergoes a strategic sequencing process that is guided and governed by a number of principles. These

principles include:

Patient Safety and Quality

Patient Transition and Flow

Clinical Workflow

System Functionality: considering both current and future state

Implementation: resources, time, budget, scope, training, risk, ability to deliver

Supports Connect Care Overall Objectives (return on investment and benefits)

Vendor Recommendation

Clinician Engagement

Change Effectiveness

Service Delivery within Combined Sites

Interim State Impact and Variation in Sequence

In addition to these principles, there are a number of variables that directly impact the implementation and resource

planning. These variables include:

Services offered at sites and the type of services that are provided.

Complexity of service offerings considering the numbers of clinical areas, specialties, departments, units,

users and beds.

Staffing totals that impact the number of launch resources required at that specific site.

Geographical distance between sites across zones.

Minimizing the length of time clinicians and staff are working in an interim state, where part of a zone is

using Connect Care and other sites and programs are using legacy systems.

Changes Changes in the December 2018 Version

Here is a summary of the changes you’ll see:

Waves 1, 2 and 3: now include information for Provincial TB Services

Waves 4, 5 and 6: includes a list of AHS sites that will be launching with Connect Care in each of waves 4-6

Waves 7, 8 and 9: will now be focused on Connect Care implementation across a number of provincial

programs, taking into consideration the unique needs and provincial scale of these programs, including

standalone locations outside core AHS sites. Sequencing details for these programs will be coming in a

future iteration of the Implementation Timeline.

Next Steps In the coming months, further work will be done to drill down to the next level of sequencing detail to determine how

clinics, services, and programs not yet listed will fit into the Implementation Timeline.
