Needs based or resource based?
Museums and technology
One thing I can’t bear is when “digital” activity is treated as being separate to other marketing or thought of as some sort of dark art. As with our personal lives, the new tools available to us have an impact on pretty much everything, but the most significant thing for me is not how easy it is to contact other people, but how easy it is for them to share their thoughts and ideas with us.

Predictions for archives:
• The archive experience will become
more interactive and self-directed.
• Archives are already community
focused; they’ll become even more so.
• Archive design will follow suit,
becoming more public, welcoming, and
flexible.
• More and more of the users of archives
will never visit an archive

TNA Digital Strategy
“There is no long term solution to the challenge of
digital preservation. All that archives can do is
make the institutional commitment to continue to
invest, through generations of technological
change, in the engineering effort required for
records to continue to be available.”

Capabilities for digital preservationCapabilities for digital preservation skills are low. 15% or lower report that full
capability exists within their organisation across all activities questioned. Overall,
34% of organisations report capability (limited or full) for automated file format
identification, 38% for file format migration, 25% for data recovery, and just 10% for
software emulation.
Q43a – Q43d: Does capability exist within your
organisation to carry out the following activities?
Engaging the public with born-digital
collections
Q63: Does your organisation carry out any activities to engage the public with your born digital

Activities highlighted were:
• Websites

Digital Capacity Building Strategy
To build digital capacity across the wider archives sector through a comprehensive, robust and widely-accepted strategy.
Digital Capacity Building
• Regional consortia supported by TNA’s ‘Collaborate and Innovate’ fund has produced some relatively digitally mature ‘pathfinder’ services and regions:
– ‘Archives West Midlands’
– ‘Archives First’
• Launch ‘Digital Archive Learning Exchange’ (DALE)
• Provision of affordable training
• Produce advice and guidance on a range of digital archive management solutions from free open source software to ‘off the shelf’ digital preservation systems.
• Publish case studies on successful digital projects

Case study: Siemens DataFinity projectWith hundreds of thousands of employees generating, storing and sending media and content through a variety of different channels, it becomes almost impossible to ascertain what data actually exists - and if it does exist, how does one access it?
City Web worked very closely with senior Siemens professionals to design a system that would solve all their business goals. With a very tight deadline we were able to deliver a highly sophisticated and scalable data-management system in only 3.5 months which was an achievement in itself. But more importantly we hit the brief perfectly and the system is becoming an integral part of the Siemens internal ecosystem.
