DAY 1: WEDNESDAY 3 APRIL 201310:00 - 11:30am Ask me anything about Creative Writing

Students are asked to participate in a literary version of ‘speed dating’, spending 15 minutes with one of the Creative Writing academics before moving on to the next …and the next….

Ask academics/writers Cathy Cole, Alan Wearne, Timothy Daly, Joshua Lobb and Merlinda Bobis anything you’d like to know about being a writer, writing, style and structure.

2:00 - 4:00pm Industry Panel: Writing Drama

This panel offers students the chance to hear from some of Australia’s leading playwrights, dramaturgs, directors and theatre professionals. Want to write a play or script, act, direct or manage a theatre? Tim Daly will lead the discussion.

Panel: Tim Spencer and Angela Betzien (both shortlisted in the UOW/Belvoir Playwright’s Commission), Timothy Daly (Playwright and participating chair) and Theatre director, Chris Ryan.

CREATIVE WRITING INDUSTRY WEEK PROGRAM

Timothy Daly is one of Australia’s most internationally-produced playwrights. Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush have appeared in his plays. His 2008 play, Derrida In Love, was written expressly for the 2011 and 2013 Academy Award nominee, Jacki Weaver. His play Kafka Dances has won over a dozen national and international awards since its première, and is the one of the most internationally performed Australian plays of all time. His new play The Man in the Attic was awarded Australia’s most prestigious award for a new play, the Patrick White Playwrights’ Award, and will be performed at the 2013 Festival of Avignon. He is a recent winner of the Keesing Paris Residency award. Timothy Daly is proud to be working with the Faculty of Creative Arts, one of the best artist-training bodies in Australia.

About the Panel

Angela Betzien is a multi-award winning writer. Her work has toured nationally and internationally. Her recent writing credits include Where in the World is Frank Sparrow? (Graf�ti) Helicopter (Melbourne Theatre Company), The Dark Room (Belvoir), Girl Who Cried Wolf (Arena & Windmilll), War Crimes, Hoods and Children of the Black Skirt (RealTV).

Christopher Ryan was a founding member of The Sydney Front and has also performed with One Extra Dance Company, Sidetrack Performance Group, Kicking & Screaming Theatre, Chunky Moves and collaborated extensively with �lmmaker/ photographer Stephen Cummins (1960-1994). Chris was Artistic Director of PACT Theatre from 1997-1999. He is also a current member of version 1.0 devising and performing in The Second Last Supper (2001), CMI - A Certain Maritime Incident (2004) and From A Distance (2006), as well as dramaturgy on Deeply Offensive and Utterly Untrue (2007/09) and This Kind of Ruckus(2009/10). Chris is currently lecturing in Theatre & Performance within Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong, directing: Don Juan and Woyzeck (2012), Orestes 3.0, and Zeitgeist '71 (2011), Ubu, Hamletmachine and Re: Medea (2010), Angels In America [Part II] and Pre-Paradise/Sorry Now (2009), Everyone & No One and Antigone & Creon (2008), Oedipus Wrecks & The Trickle Down Effect (2007). Chris has had an ongoing artistic relationship with My Darling Patricia since it's inception in 2003, dramaturge for Politely Savage (205/6), Night Garden (2009/10), Post in the Paddock (2011/12).

Tim Spencer is an actor, writer and theatre maker. Whilst studying a Bachelor of Arts/Commerce he performed and directed numerous shows at Sydney University Dramatic Society. In 2010 the performance he created in Shopfront Theatre’s ArtsLab Words They Make with their Mouths won the People’s Choice Award in the Adelaide Fringe Festival. In the same year he wrote and performed in I Scare My 6 Year Old Self (Underbelly Arts) At the Drive In (Shopfront Theatre) and The Pursued, The Pursuing, The Busy and the Tired (Brand Spanking New). In 2011 he was mentored by the Belgian theatre company, Ontroerend Goed, and performed in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Arts Radar). His monologue Fun in a Cup was performed as part of Tell it Like it Isn’t (atyp) and published by Currency Press. His performance Show Me Yours, I’ll Show You Mine �rst appeared in The Horse’s Mouth Festival (Tamarama Rock Surfers) and went on to win the Best Performance and Innovation in Theatre awards at the 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival. Join us in celebrating Song in the Dark by UOW academic and novelist Christine (Chrissy) Howe. A moving and beautiful rite of passage, Song in the Dark is Chrissy’s �rst novel. It will be launched by Dr. Merlinda Bobis.

Christine Howe grew up in the far South Coast of NSW, and currently lives in Wollongong. She has a PhD in Creative Writing and teaches at University of Wollongong. Song in the Dark was her doctoral creative project.

This panel session will talk about the �rst �ve years after graduation: How do you maintain your writing? What challenges will you face? How will you overcome these challenges? Five graduates from the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Creative Writing) will talk about their experiences and will answer questions you may have about writing life after uni. Joshua Lobb will lead discussions.

This session allows students to participate in 2 hour workshops on specialist themes. Writers in each of these groups will discuss their area, offer exercises and lead discussion. Please ensure you register for one of the sessions - lists will be available throughout the morning on 3 April.

Alan Wearne, the Melbourne poet and 15 year resident in the Illawarra, has recently had his latest collection Prepare the Cabin for Landing published by Giramondo. He will read from this work. His publishing out�t Grand Parade Poets is about to bring out UOW MCA Graduate Rachael Munro’s Indigo Morning.

Catherine Cole has published three novels, two non-�ction books, and has edited two anthologies. She has published poetry, short stories, essays and reviews and has judged some of Australia’s leading literary prizes. She’ll read from her short story collection, Home.

Joshua Lobb’s plays include Wilde Tales (Belvoir B Sharp 2004, 2004; Critical Stages 2007) and Still at Aulis (State of Play 2003). His short stories include ‘Cubicles’ (TEXT, 2012) and ‘I forgot my programme so I went to get it back’ (Bridport Anthology 2009; Best Australian Stories 2010). He will be reading from his work-in-progress: a novel, Remission.

Shady Cosgrove teaches Narrative and Editing at the University of Wollongong. Her novel What the Ground Can't Hold will be published in August with Picador. Her memoir She Played Elvis was shortlisted for the Australian Vogel Prize, and her short stories and articles have appeared in Best Australian Stories, Antipodes, Southerly, Overland, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Age. Shady will read an excerpt from She Played Elvis.

Merlinda Bobis has published nine books in various genres (novel, poetry, short story) and her plays have been performed/produced in Australia and overseas. She will be reading her poetry and an excerpt from her latest novel ‘Fish-Hair Woman.’
