ST. MARY PARTICIPATED IN THE 30TH

ANNUAL NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY BEE St. Mary Catholic School participated in the 30

th anniversary

of the National Geography Bee on Monday, January 15,

2018. This is a geography competition designed to inspire

and reward students’ curiosity about the world. Students in

grades Sixth through Eighth took a written test that answered

questions on geography. Ten students with the highest scores

from the written test moved on to the next step, which was a

live oral competition if front of their peers. Those top ten

students were Joe Burke, Joe Goff, Nick LeVasseur,

Finnegan Beecher, Grace Tervo, Chase Dewey, Zach

deBeauclair, Evan Kinter, Nick Marcicky, and Miranda Hall.

After many final rounds to break the tie between Zach and

Nick, Zach deBeauclair came out on top as the final winner.

Thousands of schools around the United States and in the

five U.S. territories will have their school champion,

including Zach deBeauclair take a qualifying test. Up to 100

of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be

eligible to compete in their state Bee on April 6, 2018.

The National Geography Society will provide an all-expenses

paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state winners to participate

in the Bee national championship rounds May 20-23, 2018.

The first place national champion will receive a $50,000

college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society,

including a subscription to National Geographic magazine,

and an all-expense paid Lindblad expedition to the Galapagos

Islands. Second and third place finishers will receive

$25,000 and $10,000 college scholarships, respectively.

Good luck Zach and congratulations to all of our participants.

HELP NEEDED St Mary Men’s Club will again be hosting our Parish Lenten

Fish Dinners beginning on February 16th. We take great

pride in serving a quality product to our patrons. Some folks

travel quite a distance, passing several Parishes who also

serve Lenten Fish Dinners, just to come to our dinner.

Serving a quality product takes a lot of work and

commitment. Having said that, if you have the time to help

we will take it! Prep work is done on Thursdays mornings

before each dinner starting at 8am and we try to be done

around noon. You don’t have to be a chef as there are many

work stations where your help is needed. A light lunch will

be provided. If Thursday mornings don’t work we can

always use the help on Fridays as we begin setup at 1pm and

there is plenty to do right up until cleanup is finished. Any

assistance you can provide for any length of time is

appreciated. Naturally this allows you bragging

rights to your friends and family that you were a

part of serving the greatest fish dinner in the

history of the world. Quite an honor indeed,

thank-you for your consideration!
