Welcome to the School of Arts and Communication’s 2019-20 season at Pacific Lutheran University! This year we present an incredible array of events and performances featuring our talented students, faculty, and guest artists — from intimate recitals to large-scale productions. We are committed to providing our students with an exceptional education, and to building and enhancing our community through the study, practice, and understanding of artistic expression. We boast some of the region’s most outstanding performing arts venues —Lagerquist Concert Hall and the Karen Hille Phillips Center for the Performing Arts — that provide exemplary environments for learning and creativity.
This calendar represents thousands of hours of student training, practice, and rehearsals under the expert guidance of our incredible School of Arts and Communication faculty. Our performances and events are some of the finest you’ll see and hear anywhere — at a fraction of the ticket prices you’d pay elsewhere, including many that are free.
I express my heartfelt appreciation to our many friends that support these performances and events, as well as our School of Arts and Communication programs, facilities, and student scholarships. In 2018-19, 396 donors contributed $427,000, bringing the cumulative amount of lifetime donor support to $42.6 million, including 54 endowed student scholarships! I encourage you to join me in supporting the School of Arts and Communication. Every donation makes an incredible difference to our students and the impact on our community is substantial.
Please visit us at plu.edu/soacevents for the most up-to-date listing of our events (schedules can change) and to purchase tickets. Please keep connected with us through our various media sources or directly with me at [email protected]. I look forward to seeing you at our events this season!
Warmest Regards,
Cameron Bennett, Dean
Dear Friends, Support SOAC The reasons for making a gift to the School of Arts and Communication are personal and varied. “During my time at PLU, I have consistently felt encouraged to follow even the smallest interest to its end. While earning a degree that follows my passions, I have had the opportunity to find unexpected interests in improv, marketing/communications, and a cappella singing. I even had the chance to study away in Oxford, London, and Italy for J-term. Thanks to PLU’s small school atmosphere and strong emphasis for community and care, I truly feel a sense of at-home support in every endeavor.”

“At PLU, I’ve had the opportunity to blend my two passions, music and theatre, in a much deeper fashion than simply taking classes in both. I have had multiple chances to compose and sound design for both faculty- and student-directed theatre productions. These plays have been the highlights of my college experience so far.”

“I realized that attending PLU was the right choice after becoming immersed in the curriculum of the Art & Design department. Not only are there classes tailored to my interests, but also classes that have helped me discover new ones. The university has no shortage of opportunities to improve yourself as an artist. PLU’s student newspaper has allowed me the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the client and designer and how to create work that fits another person’s vision. I will have a similar experience while working at Impact. I look forward to future opportunities that will arise during my remaining time at PLU.”

“Coming to PLU was my first plane ride ever, and was also to a place where I did not know anyone — I only knew of evergreens and rain. After spending a couple days on campus for a Lute OverKnight, I immediately knew there was a strong, supportive community here. Since then, I have had the privilege of being a part of great communities like Lute Nation, Ultimate Frisbee, PACE, and ASPLU. This upcoming year, I look forward to continuing to be a part of the community while working as the Masculinity Intern for the Center for Gender Equity and as Public Relations Director for ASPLU! I also look forward to leading Lute Nation and traveling to Tobago in January!”

“I chose to attend PLU over the other universities I was considering because the faculty were extremely welcoming and open. When I visited campus, I had an overwhelming feeling of comfort and home, and knew this was where I wanted to continue my education. I am currently a member of the National Theatre Honor Society, Alpha Psi Omega, at PLU and am active within the theatrical community. I look forward to furthering my work in theatre and continuing to build the larger arts community.”
