Dear Friend of Guiding Eyes for the Blind:

We think of Guiding Eyes as a family. Our generous donors, hardworking volunteers and talented staff, together with our devoted, intelligent guide dogs, make it possible for people with vision loss to achieve greater independence and accomplish adventures big and small.

Our family shares three core values: connected, confident, compassionate. We are connected among ourselves and to the outside world; our students and guide dogs are confident when they graduate from Guiding Eyes; and we value our donors and volunteers as compassionate supporters of our mission. Our family accomplishes a life-changing goal: we enable visually impaired people to define their own future with a guide dog at their side.

This Annual Report demonstrates our core values in action during Fiscal Year 2019. You’ll read about the milestones we achieved, learn about our exceptional training programs, and hear from our inspiring graduates, who tell us — in their own words — how the gift of a Guiding Eyes guide dog has changed their life.

As we write this, our world is very different than before, as we all confront the unprecedented and unpredictable crisis of COVID-19. Our daily operations may change as we care for our puppies and adult dogs while supporting our working guide dog teams. However, our commitment to our mission — bringing independence and mobility to people with vision loss — is unwavering.

Connected, confident and compassionate are qualities that are more important now than ever before. Thank you for standing with us through these challenging times, and for being such an important part of our family.

Our commitment to our mission — bringing independence and mobility to people with vision loss — is unwavering.

John, Thomas + Blaze

Breeding & Genetics Program

The Guiding Eyes for the Blind Canine Development Center in Patterson, New York is a thought-leader in breeding dogs for the health and temperament needed for guide work. About half of the 536 puppies weaned go on to become guide dogs and members of the Guiding Eyes breeding program; the other half serve in other careers such as detection dogs or are adopted.

Guiding Eyes is an international leader in breeding and genetics. Our breeding program is built upon best-in-class analysis of data from every step of a dog’s life. From our reproduction/cryogenics lab where pups are conceived to the final years of a working, retired, or career-change dog’s life, Guiding Eyes chronicles millions of data points along the way.

Our breeding and genetics work improves new litters with each generation, so that when our pups enter formal training, they are already well on their way to a successful working career.

Puppy Raising

Our volunteer puppy raisers open their homes and their hearts to our pups at approximately eight weeks old and teach them basic obedience and house manners, while socializing them to the outside world. When puppy raisers return the dogs at 15-18 months old, our staff determines whether the pups are ready for guide dog training or more suited for another career. Our Puppy Raising community is a large and dedicated one: we have more than 400 puppy raisers, and over 65 percent are repeat raisers!

Brood & Stud Fostering

Volunteer fosters provide permanent homes for Guiding Eyes brood and stud dogs. These volunteers provide a safe and loving home environment and daily exercise, keeping the dog on leash when outdoors. Like puppy raisers, brood and stud fosters receive training in dog handling, care, and obedience, as well as regular check-ups from our veterinary staff.

Socialization

Early socializers introduce Guiding Eyes pups to new environments and experiences within our puppy center. From age one week to four weeks, the puppies receive daily massages to build the human/canine bond. Beginning at four weeks, the puppies begin daily ventures into the early socialization room and to our outside areas (weather permitting). These repeated positive experiences help build the puppies’ confidence.

Home socializers bring two puppies (age six to nine weeks) to their home for three to five days to expose them to new sights, sounds, and people, with training and equipment provided by Guiding Eyes.

Veterinary Services

Maintaining health and well-being for our world-class canines is of the utmost importance to us at Guiding Eyes. We operate two veterinary hospitals through our main campus in Yorktown Heights, New York and our Canine Development Center in Patterson, New York. Guiding Eyes’ state-of-the-art veterinary facilities are fully staffed with veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, and administrators. Our vet team cares for our dogs in the Breeding, Puppy, and Training Programs. Our top-notch veterinary care extends to graduates of Guiding Eyes and their dogs through remote communication and referrals or using our own facilities if proximity allows.

Our veterinary staff performs surgical and dental procedures, radiology (“x-rays”), ultrasonography (“sonograms”), endoscopy, MRIs, laboratory work, routine vaccinations and an array of wellness services. We also work closely with veterinary specialists in the fields of ophthalmology, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, and radiology. Many of these doctors donate all or part of their services to help provide our dogs with the best care possible throughout their lives.

Guide Dog Training

Our guide dogs spend five to 12 months undergoing formal training with a professional instructor. They learn the skills needed to safely guide a person with vision loss, such as indicating changes of elevation and navigating around obstacles.

Our proprietary Successive Training & Enrichment Program (STEP) uses a relationship-based approach to raising and training our pups, using positive rewards to build a spirit of cooperation and willingness. Dogs raised through this program display significantly increased confidence and focus.

FISCAL YEAR 2019 TRAINING

Here’s what supporters like YOU have made possible

283 dogs entered guide dog training

262 Labrador Retrievers, 21 German Shepherds

157 dogs graduated

126 dogs went on to other careers

■■ Each guide dog is carefully matched with his or her blind handler based on pace, pull, personality, and other critical factors.

■■ Guide dogs do not know how to cross the street. Their handlers listen to traffic sounds and determine when it’s safe.

■■ Guide dogs are taught “intelligent disobedience” and will ignore the command to move forward if a car or other dangerous object is in their path.

We ran the 2019 New York City Half Marathon!

Three Running Guide Dogs — Westley, Waffle and Gus — took turns leading Guiding Eyes President and CEO Thomas Panek through the race. The team’s historic run, including Gus’ retirement at the finish line, brought awareness to the Guiding Eyes mission and earned media coverage worldwide.

The Guiding Eyes for the Blind Running Guides program, the only one of its kind in the world, enables people who are blind or visually impaired to have the opportunity to learn how to safely run with their guide dog’s support.

Our Running Guide Dogs enhance their handlers’ independence, autonomy and overall physical fitness — whether the team is going for a casual run in the park or training for a 10K. The health and safety of the dogs and people are of the utmost priority; therefore, Running Guides are fitted with a specialized harness and boots. For students who love to run, this training can be added on to any of our other programs.

Running Guides Program

Career-Change Dogs

Guiding Eyes spends months getting to know our puppies and dogs, to make sure they’re suited for guide work. Just like people, dogs have different personalities and want different careers. (And for some, that means a career as a pet!)

Dogs who aren’t suited to guide or other service work are placed in loving homes through our public adoption program. These loving, impeccably bred puppies and dogs are in high demand but are well worth the wait.

Student Training Programs

Guiding Eyes for the Blind is proud to offer a variety of programs, so our students can receive the training that best suits their needs.

■■ On Campus Training Students spend three weeks at our Yorktown Heights, New York campus to learn how to care for and travel safely with their new guide dogs.

■■ Specialized Training Program This innovative program empowers people with vision loss who have additional challenges such as gait and balance issues, cognitive challenges, and individuals who are DeafBlind. Highly customized training ensures that each team achieves maximum independence and mobility.

■■ Home Training This program takes our dogs and training staff to the home of students who cannot attend the On Campus Training Program in Yorktown Heights, New York.

■■ Accelerated Client Training Option (ACTION) This abbreviated program is designed for experienced guide dog users.

Graduation

Monthly graduation ceremonies are the culmination of training for our guide dog teams. They are an opportunity for puppy raisers to meet their dogs’ new handlers and for all volunteers, donors, and supporters to share in the celebration of new independence.

Graduation ceremonies are open to the public and held Saturdays at our Yorktown Heights, New York campus, or can be viewed on our website anytime.

RetirementIn retirement, a guide dog often goes on to live with its handler who is blind or visually impaired, or with a family member or friend of the handler. Sometimes, Guiding Eyes is able to place retired guide dogs with their original puppy raisers or another adopter. We are committed to caring for our dogs from the moment of their birth throughout their lives.

I go more places and do more things, partly because of the enjoyment of using a dog. That sense of independence and freedom of movement contributes to having better spirits, being happier, engaging more and being bolder. For me, life is fuller with a guide dog.

Graduate Spotlights

I’m just so extremely thankful and really humbled for the opportunity given to me. The gift I’ve received will change my life.

David found a perfect match in his first guide dog, Tessi, a petite yellow Labrador with a heart on her nose. He describes her as “active, keen and ready to work,” an “intelligent and energetic partner” in his busy life as a U.S. Army veteran and higher education professional at Stetson University.

Since their graduation, David and Tessi have been busy working on campus and have traveled to Indiana, Colorado and Mississippi. Says David, “I actually don’t know how I functioned without Tessi. She is my best friend, and she keeps me out of trouble on a daily basis.”

David + Tessi

Maricar is a DeafBlind woman who works as an independent living supervisor at the Helen Keller National Center. She was recently paired

with black Labrador Cliff, her second guide dog from Guiding Eyes. “When I met him, I fell in love with him,” she says.

Maricar and Cliff completed two of Guiding Eyes’ specialized training programs: the partners learned to communicate using non-verbal commands through the Specialized Training program, and also completed the Running Guides program, which trained Cliff to safely guide Maricar on exercise runs. “Cliff allows me to be more independent. I navigate better. He’s an amazing, special being, and he works so hard,” she says.

Maricar + Cliff

With this dog, I see so many possibilities for myself. Especially running. I am free again!

Walking independently with Flint is amazing. I don’t have to be so cautious all the time — he guides me around obstacles with ease.

First-time guide dog user Karen is a Connecticut school administrator who loves cooking and hiking with her husband and teenage daughter. Her Guiding Eyes black Labrador Flint was a perfect match from the start. “The first time I walked with him, the instructor was describing the obstacles that Flint was guiding me around, and I hadn’t even realized that he was doing it! It was pretty cool to hear.”

Flint also fit right in with Karen’s family. “He had made himself part of the household,” she says. “It’s an incredible experience. Sensing the intelligence of these guide dogs and feeling how they care for you is impossible to understand unless you’ve experienced it yourself.”

Clayton refused to let blindness slow him down. As a father, a high school wrestling coach, a weightlifter, and a runner, he is always busy. “I consider myself a strong person. But I wanted my independence back.”

He found a loyal partner in his first guide dog, black Labrador Eddie. “My Eddie is the perfect guide dog for me: he is very confident and focused, but at playtime he’s a complete goofball,” says Clayton. Eddie was named in honor and in memory of Detective Edwin Ortiz, who served 20 years in the New York City Police Department. “He walks along my side to keep me safe, just as Detective Ortiz did for so many others.”

Clayton + Eddie

Eddie helps me do it on my own and believe in myself. He makes me a stronger person.

Guiding Eyes is grateful for our 2019 Volunteer of the Year, Allison Bernstein. On a neighbor’s recommendation, Allison came to Guiding Eyes seeking new challenges as her children grew older and more independent. This committed, eager supporter found volunteer opportunities and much more: “At Guiding Eyes, I have found my second home… I feel a real sense of purpose,” she says.

Allison began her volunteer adventure in our headquarters, assisting the Development team with data entry,

She also completed training to assist with kennel enrichment at our Canine Development Center and perform home socialization. “It’s fun to interact with the puppies, but it’s fulfilling to know that I’m helping them on their journey to become guide dogs,” says Allison.

Allison particularly enjoys meeting Guiding Eyes students, and recalls one four-time graduate who told her that every volunteer helps change the life of everyone they interact

with. “That was an eye-opening moment that really touched my heart,” she says. “What the dogs do for our students is truly phenomenal.”

Allison, a true team player, volunteers more than her time; she and her husband Eric are generous donors, and she recently recruited Eric’s company, Broadridge Financial Solutions, as a corporate sponsor.

Thank you, Allison – we are honored by your support!

PATHFINDERS

We gratefully acknowledge our Pathfinder Society members (“Pathfinders”), generous, forward-thinking supporters who have included Guiding Eyes in their estate plans.

Barbara Brunner

After driving by Guiding Eyes’ Canine Development Center in 2015, Barbara went online to learn more. She soon became a volunteer in the whelping kennel and home socialization program, opened her home to Viking, a black Labrador stud in our breeding program, and adopted career-change German Shepherd pup Max.

Barbara has helped fund the whelping kennel’s remote camera system, donated a dog treadmill, and volunteered at countless events. She recalls sponsoring a graduation ceremony when one of Viking’s first pups completed training. “Even though I wasn’t directly involved with that puppy’s accomplishments, I was still so proud,” says Barbara. “The puppy raiser, along with Guiding Eyes volunteers and staff, did so much of the work to get that puppy to graduation day. It really takes a village!”

Barbara became inspired to make a lasting impact when she learned about the Pathfinder Society. “Designating Guiding Eyes as a beneficiary of my IRA gives me peace of mind that Guiding Eyes dogs will continue to make a profound difference in people’s lives for years to come.”

Barbara, the Guiding Eyes village is grateful for your support!

Guiding Eyes appreciates the dedication of Pathfinder Society member Barbara Brunner, who took a passerby’s interest in our mission and developed it into a passion.
