Dear Sherri,
I hope everyone was able to survive the winter storms
comfortably, and so we welcome spring ... with a snow
storm.
We are looking forward to an exciting schedule of CE
programs at our regular meetings, and I hope you all
plan to attend. Work is currently going forward on this
year's "Catch the Wave" Conference at which time our featured speaker will
be Gerald Meyer, our current ASHP president. I think his is a real coup for our
organization so let's have a great show of support through your attendance.
The format this year will be a bit different so check the CSHP web site for all
the latest information.
The ASHP summer meeting will be the first week in June and our organization
can send up to 3 delegates. We currently have 2 delegates so if any one is
planning to attend and would like to serve as a delegate (you must be an ASHP
member), please let me know so we can get you registered.
I'm looking forward to seeing you on Thursday, March 28 at Backus Hospital
for our regular meeting, CE program and, of course, a delicious light meal.

CSHP is 65!
by Eric Tichy, PharmD, Senior Director
CSHP is proud to celebrate the 65th anniversary of
its founding in 2013. CSHP has benefited from a
long legacy of distinguished leadership and will celebrate past and present
Connecticut pharmacy leaders with ties to CSHP throughout this 65th
anniversary year.
In November of 1948, CSHP held its first meeting at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The meeting was presided over by John Zugich, the 1st CSHP president, 4th
president of ASHP, and Director of Pharmacy at Yale New Haven from 1947 to
1951. In the first years, CSHP meetings where held exclusively in New Haven
with meetings rotating between Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Hospital of
Saint Raphael. In the 1950s, the CSHP meeting sites began to rotate around the
state, and a joint meeting with the Massachusetts Society was held as well.
CSHP continues to hold meetings at Connecticut hospitals and schools of
pharmacy to this day.

Past Leader Profile: John J. Zugich, CSHP President 1948
Mr. Zugich was a founding member of ASHP, the 4th President of ASHP, and
1st CSHP President. He completed a residency with the distinguished Harvey
Whitney in the early 1940s and received the Whitney Award, ASHP's highest
honor, in 1987. In his Whitney Award speech, Zugich noted that "ASHP and
its practitioners have developed a noble tradition for pharmacy." We continue
to carry out to this tradition to this day.
During his time at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Zugich is credited with bringing
modern pharmacy practice to the medical center and even establishing a
residency training program. He was a prolific author of pharmacy leadership
over five decades with a body of work that is notable for its breadth as well as
its depth. As ASHP President, Mr. Zugich was credited with establishing the
first full-time staffed ASHP national headquarters in Washington, DC. In the
1950s, he returned to Michigan where he served as a hospital administrator at
the University of Michigan Medical Center until his retirement in 1975.

CSHP Legislative Committee Chair
The 2013 legislative session continues full steam, and
CSHP continues to screen dozens of bills that are raised
each week. The session adjourns at midnight June 5th.
If there is any specific bill you wish to follow, the easiest
way to track it is to go onto the general assembly
website (http://www.cga.ct.gov) and insert the bill
number at the top of the page.
In addition to bill screening in the legislature, CSHP is convening discussions
with the Pharmacy Commission and hospital pharmacies on the subject of
"tech-check-tech" as a PPMI initiative. This topic was discussed during a
recent state legislative chairs' conference call convened by ASHP, and CSHP is
collecting information from other states that are currently in this debate or
have recently changed their practice act. Further updates on this topic will be
communicated as it becomes available.
A very successful Pharmacy Day at the Capitol occurred on March 12th,
attended by many pharmacists and pharmacy students, and probably the
greatest number of legislators and staff the event has had in many years.
Legislators were engaged in many discussions with pharmacists and students
that evening, and follow-up communication has been exchanged between
legislators and attendees since the event. The small size of our State means
that simple face-to-face communication followed up by a single call or e-mail
can be very impactful.

PTCB Announces Pharmacy Technician
Certification Program Changes2/27/2013 Washington, DC
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) has announced future
changes to the PTCB Certification Program that will advance pharmacy
technician qualifications by elevating PTCB's standards for national
certification and recertification. During the next seven years, PTCB will phase
in the changes, including mandatory background checks, accredited education
requirements, and changes in acceptable continuing education (CE) programs
for recertification.
"PTCB is elevating our certification requirements in order to meet the
demands of the evolving healthcare system," said PTCB Executive Director and
CEO Everett B. McAllister, MPA, RPh. "We have made bold decisions on what
will be required for candidates to become certified pharmacy technicians
(CPhTs). Our Board of Governors is sharply focused on ensuring that the PTCB
Program prepares CPhTs for the integral roles they play in supporting
pharmacists in all practice settings." PTCB's requirements have remained
largely unchanged since the organization's founding in 1995.
The PTCB Board of Governors decided that new candidates for PTCB
certification will be required to complete criminal background checks,
beginning in, or around, 2014. Many employers already require background
checks as a condition of employment, and PTCB plans to collaborate with
stakeholders to synchronize with the existing systems.
As part of the 20 hours of CE required for recertification, individual CPhTs will
need to complete one hour of medication safety CE, effective in 2014, in
addition to the one hour of law CE already required. By 2015, PTCB will
7/30/13 CSHP March 2013 Early Spring News Brief.htm
file:///S:/Client Documents/CSHP/Communications/News Brief/March 2013/CSHP March 2013 Early Spring News Brief.htm 7/10
require all 20 recertification CE hours to be pharmacy technician-specific.
Many existing CE offerings already fit this definition. The allowable CE hours
from college courses will be reduced from 15 to 10 by 2016, and allowable in-
service hours will be phased out by 2018.
By 2020, PTCB will require candidates for the initial PTCB certification to
successfully complete an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists
(ASHP)- accredited education program. ASHP-accredited programs include
didactic course work and practical experience, thereby providing well-
rounded training for technicians.
Beginning today (2.27.13), PTCB is conducting a 90-day open, online comment
period at www.ptcb.org to allow members of the pharmacy community to
share best practices for implementing the new requirements. PTCB intends to
begin releasing the policies and procedures regarding the implementation of
these decisions later this year.
These program changes are the result of a PTCB initiative which began with a
2011 summit focused on five areas related to pharmacy technicians: Consumer
Awareness, Resources, Education, State Policy and Testing (C.R.E.S.T.). Summit
attendees included pharmacists, certified pharmacy technicians (CPhTs),
educators, major employers, state boards of pharmacy, and others. Summit
findings, combined with results from two profession-wide surveys, called for
PTCB and the pharmacy profession to make decisive changes in certification
standards.
Visit www.ptcb.org for more information on the certification program
changes.

Greetings from the University of Saint Joseph
submitted by Sharmon Osae, USJ Student Chapter President
After completing a recent general member meeting, we have a ton of exciting
things underway. We would like to welcome new leaders within our
organization including Gregory Jaszczur, Historian, and Farie Mohamed,
Student Government Association Liaison and Chair of Organ Donor
Awareness Committee. We truly appreciate them stepping up into these roles

to help further our organization.
In a continuing effort to obtain national recognition as a Student Society of
Health-System Pharmacy (SSHP) from ASHP, we have arranged for Dr. Tichy
and Dr. Sam from Yale-New Haven Hospital to come in and be guest speakers
for our April general member meeting. Our members enjoyed representing
USJ at Pharmacy Day at the Capitol on March 12th in Hartford. Looking ahead,
the warm spring weather is not far off and we are hoping to hold a number of
Organ Donor Registration Events at various locations throughout the Greater
Hartford area. Lastly, members have decided on their first fundraising project
and will soon be creating order forms to put them on sale for all USJ School of
Pharmacy friends and family. Be on the lookout for more exciting news from
the USJ student chapter!
UConnGreetings from the University of Connecticut
submitted by Chris Flores, UConn Student Chapter President
Our new semester at UCONN has gotten off to a very exciting start. The
UCONN-CSHP chapter recently finished our successful annual poison
prevention presentations in which we visited three elementary schools and
educated over 400, 1st and 2nd graders on the differences between candies and
poisons. In February, Teena Sam, PharmD, BCPS (YNHH) visited the
University of Connecticut to present on the fundamentals of the Pharmacy
Practice Model Initiative (PPMI) and on ways in which it can be implemented
into future clinical pharmacy practice within the health system.
Currently our student chapter has planned a wide variety of events to end off
the school year:
1) At the end of March we will be conducting a residency speaker event in
which a handful of PGY1 residency directors, P4 students, and residents
throughout the state will be visiting the University of Connecticut to talk
about their experiences and ways to stand out when pursuing a hospital
residency or fellowship.
2) To expand upon the Operation Donate Life Campaign that we established
at the University of Connecticut last year, (organ donor recruitment) this year
we have planned a full week long advocacy event (for the first week in April)
in which Kari Mull, a New England donate life representative, will be visiting
UCONN to talk about the importance of becoming an organ donor and ways
to spread the initiative. In addition to this presentation, a handful of students
will be going on a site visit at YNHH to learn more about Transplant
Pharmacy with Dr. Eric Tichy.
3) In support of ALS Connecticut, the UCONN CSHP chapter will be hosting a
6v6 dodge ball (sponsored by Rite Aid) tournament in which all the proceeds
from the event will directly benefit those affected by ALS. If anyone is
interested in putting together a team please contact myself or
