Class Descriptions

Accessing Community Agencies including Respite Care: The course will assist students and families in accessing services in Central Texas.

Anxiety and the Brain: this session will examine a profile of what anxiety means to teenagers, what psychological and physiological effects are happening to them when anxiety occurs, and what brain research teaches us along with a few coping skills to add to their toolkit.

ARK2Freedom: SOCIAL MEDIA: Social media is a great way to connect with friends and make fun posts, but it can also be scary. Apart from the obvious (more severe) threats like human trafficking, there are spambots, fake profiles, and cyberbullies. It is vital to know how to protect yourself on Social Media. This session will give some statistics about different social media issues and discuss how to be safe when using social media.

ASK + Training: Like CPR or the Heimlich maneuver, the fundamentals of ASK are easily learned and may save a life. The presentation focuses on the warning signs, clues, and suicidal communications of people in psychological distress and what action to take to take to prevent a possible tragedy.

Common Sense Media: This session will focus on what parents need to know about social media and anxiety.

Community Resources: for Community resources for both military and non-military connected families. who have concerns about their children’s mental health?

COVID -19 & Anxiety: Learn how to recognize the signs of anxiety in your children and how to provide resources to help them.

Effects of COVID on Children: This session will examine the effects of Covid-19 onYouth: Trauma and Isolation, Age and Development, Response and Resilience

Helping Children and Adolescents to Self-Regulate: This session will discuss helping students to identify their emotions and how to offer practical strategies to help them practice self-regulation.

Human Trafficking: Learn how to recognize the signs of human trafficking and support victims to find help.

Killeen/Heights Veterans Center (Dept of VA): The presenter will brief on free and confidential services in counseling available for Activity Duty, Veterans, and their Families.

Managing Mental Health: The session will define mental health, causes and signs of mental illness, and how to maintain mental wellness.

Managing Your Feelings: This session will help in learning to identify your feelings and identifying and practicing appropriate strategies to respond positively to negative feelings.

Meridian Tapping (Self-Regulation Strategy): Meridian Tapping Therapy is a mind/body healing technique for eliminating fears and painfully intense negative emotions. The technique involves physically tapping on specific meridian points on the body while the subject focuses on a traumatic situation that is elicitinga strong emotional response.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: The presenter will share mindfulness and relaxation techniques that will help in developing skills that will uplift positivity, build confidence, and self-awareness.

Mindfulness for Kids! The presenters will discuss what mindfulness is and how to use it with children of all ages; including breathing techniques, music, and positive thinking/speaking.

Mindfulness Matters: Gain knowledge of the physical, emotional, and mental benefits of mindfulness, and learn mindfulness techniques to use with children and adolescents.

Parenting in Times of Stress and Transition: Learn how to recognize stress in yourself and in others and learn skills and interventions to improve parenting and coping.

Class Descriptions

Reframing Negative Thought patterns: This session will walk participants through the steps to identify negative thoughts and replace them with helpful, realistic thoughts. The participant will gain a strategy for reducing stress and creating positive thinking patterns.

Restorative Parenting: Restorative parenting refers to a philosophy that emphasizes repairing harm over punishing and shaming, this approach creates opportunity for personal accountability and a chance to repair any harm done while building relationships in the home. This proactive approach is designed to use the best parenting techniques and incorporate the restorative values of empathy, accountability, making things right for everyone in the family.

Self-Care for Caregivers: This presenter will offer practical strategies for self-care.

Self-Care for Families: The presenter will offer practical strategies for Self-Care.

Self-Regulation & Student Wellness for Elementary Students: This session will teach students and

parents how to self-regulate by using animal stretches. The presenters will also explore the connection

between physical and mental wellness with guided meditation and mindfulness practices.

Sensory Bottles: One of the most common activities to encourage sensory play are sensory bottles. A

sensory bottle is any sealable container filled with a base like water and glitter or glue with different

types of objects to help keep your child engaged. Sensory bottles are easily customizable making them

fun to make! You can use beads, sequins, pom poms or any other small objects that will keep your kids

interested. You can customize sensory bottles by the child’s interests and needs. If parents would like

to have their children join in the session to make a bottle along with the presentation, you are welcome

to do so. Be sure to have your materials and be ready to follow along.

Setting Those Limits 30 min per week To Reduce Anxiety: This session will provide strategies for

reducing anxiety.

Signs & Symptoms of Common Stressors for Children: Discussion of common stressors for children to

include recognizing signs and symptoms of stress and self-care techniques. Resources for Military

Children and Families will also be provided.

Talking to Children/Teens About Death, Sadness & Depression: The presenter will offer talking points

for conversations about death as well as provide insight on recognizing signs of sadness and depression.

Teen Cell Phone Addiction: The presenter will discuss how to recognize signs of cell phone addiction

and resources for intervention.

The ABCs of Meaningful Conversations: This session will discuss awareness and avoidance of becoming

emotional, building trust through clarity, and communicating with patience and understanding. The

participant will come away with a way to bridge the communication gap between themselves and their

child(ren) and themselves and the school.

Trauma Informed Parenting: Gain basic understanding of ACEs and trauma responses. Learn ways to

help children cope.

Trauma of the Deep Freeze in Texas 2021: In February of 2021, there was a record-breaking event that

brought conditions for Texans who were impacted throughout the entire state of Texas. We will be

discussing concepts for ways to identify trauma and align best-practices to help students better

understand themselves as they recover.

Turning Your Words to Gold: This student will discuss how to help your student with fostering positive

self-esteem through modeling positive self-talk and communication.

Understanding Your Conflict Style: Do You Fight, Take Flight, or Freeze? How to identify their conflict

style; How to incorporate strategies to working through “conflicts” faced at home; and how to

understand feelings that exist during conflict and the potential action to solving problems peacefully.

Unlocking the Heart (Being Aware of Your Core Beliefs – Conflict Resolution): This activity is a useful

resource for discussing adolescent conflict. It is an ideal interactive tool to get kids talking and sharing.

This activity can be used for grade levels 2-12. This is also a fun activity to encourage discussion at

home.

Will the Behavior Meet your Needs Over Time: This session will discuss how to help your child think

through current situations by exploring positive and negative consequences, while focusing on the end

goal?
