THE TOWNSHIP OF ST . JOSEPH has joined the growing number of municipalities across Canada that have formally acknowledged their citizens’ rights to a clean, healthy envi- ronment. At its May 5th meeting, Council received a presen- tation from Mary-Kay Stortini about the ‘Blue Dot’ movement that is now sweeping the nation and perhaps soon, the rest of the world. Conceived by the widely-respected David Suzuki Foundation, the ‘Blue Dot’ refers to a long-distance view of our planet from space with the caption “This Blue Dot is Our Only Home.” It not only stresses the importance of protecting our environ- ment for future generations, it chal- lenges municipalities to commit to making decisions that protect our healthy environment and natural resources, now and for the fu- ture. Although Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms guaran- tees our rights such as freedom of expression and protection against discrimination, we are actually one of a minority of countries left in the world that does not formally recognize its citi- zens’ environmental rights. One would think that everyone in the world enjoys such a fundamental right, but not re- ally, at least as far as government decision-mak- ing and legislation go. The official declaration reads: “Whereas The Township of St. Joseph understands that peo- ple are part of the environment, and that a healthy environ- ment is inextricably linked to the well being of our commu- nity, the Corporation of The Township of St. Joseph hereby declares that all people have the right to live in a healthy envi- ronment, including: The right to breathe clean air; The right to drink clean water; The right to consume safe food; The right to access nature; and The right to know about pollutants and contaminants released into the local en- vironment. All future decision-making and actions by the Township will adhere to this principle. Mary-Kay’s local initiative is supported by a number of fellow concerned citizens as well as local organizations such as the St. Joseph Island Horticultural Society. The ‘Blue Dot’ movement aims at every municipality, be it a city or a rural township, endorsing such a declaration in its jurisdic- tion. This would then spill ‘uphill’ to push provincial, then federal gov- ernment commitment to similar princi- ples. Is the environment really a municipal issue? Absolutely! THE ST. JOSEPH ISLAND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’SPlant Sale on Saturday, May 16 is a popular annual VictoriaDay Weekend Event. With members’ and island residents’ do-nations of perennials, veggie plants, herbs, ground covers, house plants, shrubs and small trees there was something foreveryone.

The official sale isfrom 8 am to 1 pmon Saturday, but anyremaining plant ma-terial stays in frontof Green Oaks theentire weekend forpeople to browseand pick up anythingthat takes their fancy.Just leave a donationfor the Society in theglass jar. The moniesraised allow the So-ciety to purchaseflowers, shrubs andtrees for beds andparks across the is-land.

Master Gardener Maria Smith and Sheila Campbell werepresent on Saturday to answer gardening questions. Commu-nity Garden members, with help from the 4H Society, pro-vided delectable muffins and coffee for our customers toenjoy by donation. Marig & Paul Cooper had a children’s ac-tivity table. Although the day was cool and some of our mem-bers were unable to attend, the sale still went well.

Everyone is welcome to join our Horticultural Society. Mem-bership is only $5 and you get discounts at local garden cen-tres and greenhouses. Our next meeting is on Thursday, May28 at 7 pm at Harmony St. Mark’s Friendship Hall. The topic

is the ‘Relocalization of Food Infrastructure’. Over the nextseveral weeks you might see our members working in themany beds the Society tends around the Island. Stop and helpor at least honk your horn to say ‘hello’ as you go by.

Thanks to all the members and their husbands, daughters, sons, relatives and friends who help us put on the Plant Sale.Without these dedicated volunteers, we could not put the Saleon each year. It is the main fund raiser for the Society and

adds to the dollarsdonated by our gen-erous local town-ships to “Keep OurIsland Beautiful”.

Watch for anotherpopular St. JosephIsland HorticulturalSociety Event, theAdcock’s GardenTour & Tea, whichwill be on ThursdayJuly 16th from 2 - 4pm. Everyone is wel-come!

Back in the Water! It must be spring! Once again, the Hilton Beach Marinawas where the Saturday boating action is, as the huge craneand its supporting cast appeared once again for the re-launching of the sailboats from their winter storage cra-dles.

The large crew of ‘pros’ and volunteer boat owners had itall down to a fine art, or perhaps more of a ballet, as onegroup prepared each boat for hoisting, another handledthe hoisting and moving of each boat to the water, whilestill others dealt with getting the boats moved and settledinto their slips, where their owners can complete the rest ofthe setup work.

As far as we know, everything went off without a hitch, asusual. It seems these folks have done this before, a time ortwo!

BLUE DOT . . . continued from cover

and a myriad of other issues that directly affectthe quality of our environment.

How our society deals with its waste is always amajor concern. “We all need to re-think ourattitudes about the way in which we throwthings away.” Mary-Kay tells us. “We need tounderstand that there really is no ‘away’. Evenwhen it’s out of sight, everything is still here, part of our environment for better or worse.”she adds passionately.

Bravo, St. Joseph Township! And Brava, Mary-Kay! You’re leading the way for the rest of us,our children and our children’s children yet tocome.

To find out more about the ‘Blue Dot’ move-ment, visit www.bluedot.ca … or just askMary-Kay. It’s a subject that’s always close toher heart!

WHILE IN RICHARDS LANDING last Saturday, wedropped in at the Grand Opening of ‘the Deal House’ wherethere really were ‘deals’ aplenty. Located in the former ‘CalicoHen’ space next to the Island Market, the new store bears lit-tle resemblance to its former self. Everything is new, from thesleek, modern décor to the stylish designer clothing, hand-bags, sunglasses and acces-sories and, of course, the newfaces of the equally-stylishstore staff. Even the subtlecolour treatment is carefullychosen for its ability to makethe customer feel happy andrelaxed.

We’re not sure how ‘relaxed’the store staff was on GrandOpening day. They seemed tobe kept busy, as new shopperswere steadily arriving tobrowse and check things out.Owner Katherine Henshellwas on hand to lend a help-ing hand to her two hard-working sales ladies, BrielleFord and Amy (Manchur)

Bringleson (we hear that a third person has since been hiredas well) but she did take a brief time-out from her hectic dayfor a quick chat with us.

“For several years now, I’ve been thinking about what a greatidea it would be to have a ‘factory outlet’ kind of store, offer-ing name brand fashion items, right here on the Island.” she

smiled. And it appearsthat she’s right on themoney. “We’re carry-ing designer fashionsand accessories thatyou can’t get aroundhere or in the Sault.”she adds. “At veryleast, you’d have to goto Toronto to findthese things … andprobably even then, not at these prices!”

Katherine shares a lit-tle secret with us:most of her fashionitems are overstockitems bought directly

from Macy’s in New York. What’s more, the store’s inventoryof designer clothing and accessories at ‘deal’ prices will beconstantly changing, with new items arriving every week.

The Henshells actually did a ‘soft launch’ a few weeks ago, opening the store to customers, even though they hadn’t yetbeen able to stock their complete inventory. That’s allchanged now. The kinks are worked out, the store is fullystocked and it looks a lot different than it did just two weeksago!

“Is there really a market for upscale, designer stuff here?” weasked. “Oh yes!” she replied instantly. “Fashion discountstores are always popular with shoppers. In fact, usually themore similar stores like this there are in an area, the morethey tend to attract people – either locally or people whotravel to the location. Look at the popularity of outletmalls!” she added.

Katherine is definitely on to something here. She and hus-band Thomas are expanding the clothing offerings availablein Richards Landing and they expect their lineup to appeal toeveryone – local residents and tourists alike.

Indeed, retail history shows that a grouping of stores offeringunique but similar inventories - clothing, for example – tendsto improve sales for all of such stores in that area. The newcustomers they attract also create more business for everyone.“Ideally, we want to stimulate a marketplace where shoppersfrom the Sault or elsewhere are attracted to ‘make a day of it’,coming here to shop and dine in our stores and restaurants.”she adds. “That’s good for business … everyone’s business!”

We wish Katherine and Thomas Henshell, as well as Brielleand Amy, the very best of success with the new store. We havea hunch they’re going to be kept pretty busy!
