Connecting Jacob Gable with His Parents Last Reviewed and Updated: 5/15/2018

I believe that Johannes Gebel/John Gable (1.2) and Elizabeth of the Wilhelm Gebel of Manheim Township and

His Children document are the parents of Jacob Gable and that his siblings are Benjamin Gable, Henry Gable,

Polly Gable and Catherine Gable Prowant. It is also possible that Jacob Gable is the son of one of Johannes

Gebel's brothers.

Both John Gable and Jacob Gable have records tying them back to Manheim Township, Lancaster County,

Pennsylvania. Jacob has no birth record. Two of his children have birth records which link his family to

Manheim township in 1817 and 1822. The first is from a Family Record for son William Gable's family (full

document shown later in this document.) The second is the obituary of his daughter Elizabeth Gable Klugh.

"Elizabeth Gebel" has a birth fraktur (see later in this document) which says she was born in Lancaster Parish

and is written in German.

The birth frakturs of his sons Jacob and Henry Gable (see later in this document), state they were born in East

Hempfield Township in 1825 and 1827.

According to the 1830 census "Jacob Gebel" still lived in Manheim township. In the 1840 and 1850 census he

lived in East Hempfield. No record of him in 1860 exists. In 1870 he was living at the home of his daughter

Elizabeth Gable Klugh in Mountville.

John Gable and his children Benjamin Gable, Henry Gable, Polly Gable and Catherine Gable Prowant moved to

Ohio around 1830 while Jacob Gable remained in Lancaster county.

Why Did My Parents Know Each Other Well Enough To Get Married?

Next, I'm going to mention some ways that these two branches of the Gable family kept in contact.

During the 19th century letters were written back and forth and there were visits back and forth across a

distance of about 350 miles. The Ohio Gables (descendants of John Gable) were from my father's side of the

Gable family and the Lancaster county Gables (descendants of Jacob Gable) were from my mother's side of the

Gable family. Some of these letters were saved by John Gable, son of Benjamin Gable. When my parents

were children they visited each other in 1925 and on some other occasions. In the photo on the next page my

mother is the child on the left and my father is next to her. John Gable, who saved the letters is the man with

the hat in the back.

The John Gable Letter Collection

The John Gable Letter Collection was saved by John Gable, who was the son of Benjamin Gable, and lived in

Medina County, Ohio. My mother got a copy of these letters from George Gable, who is the grandson of John

Gable's son Uriah Gable. These letters were written between 1866 and 1894 and include letters from

descendants of Benjamin and Henry in Ohio and Jacob in Pennsylvania. Also, of interest is that I have tried to

identify all of the people mentioned in the letters and the only Gable descendants I've identified are descended

from Benjamin, Henry or Jacob. None are descendants of other children of John Gable's father Wilhelm Gebel.

The only other Gable mentioned was a Jesse Gable, who purchased cider in 1885 from John Gable and his

brother David. Jesse Gable doesn't appear to be related to any of Wilhelm Gebel's descendants.

On the next page is a chart

1 showing how the Gable family members that participated in the letter writing

campaign or were mentioned in them are related. In the chart my father's Ohio relatives are blue and my

mother's Lancaster County, Pennsylvania relatives are brown. The chart uses the pen symbol for the letter

writers and the envelope symbol for people mentioned in the letters.

There is more information about the people in the chart and what the letters contained on the following pages.

1 Doug Baldwin, a descendant of Jacob Gable's son William Gable and Catherine Klugh, made this chart. Doug is the son of Karen

Gable on the chart. Thanks, Doug!

John's sister Elizabeth (Liz or Lizzie) lived in Lancaster County between 1868 and 1872 and worked for

Abraham Bausman and his wife Anna Brenneman in Millersville, Manor township as a domestic servant.

Abraham Bausman was related to the Gables through their Klugh spouses (see chart below). In blue are two of

Jacob Gable's children. John Gable's wife Sarah Campbell was also originally from Millersville and they were

married in Ohio in 1871. Letter writers are in red and letter numbers in green below.

Elizabeth's presence in Millersville resulted in a bunch of letters back and forth between John and Liz and also

with some of the Pennsylvania Gable family relatives and John to assure him that all was well with Liz. Below

is a sampling of some of these letters.

Letter # Date From To About

4 6/3/1867 Liz Gable, Mountville

John Gable, Ohio

Went with Barb and Molly Klugh, Lidy Laymon to eat ice cream. Molly Gable and Fred Mann came home with her. Aunt Kity's going to get boarders. Mentions a couple of visits to Aunt Kity. Wants Mary Koppes to answer her letter. Aunt Lica wants all to go to Uncle Henry's and Uncle Ruben's that night. Had visitors from Stark County, Ohio where Aunt Poll was.

6 2/23/1868 Barbara Klugh, Mountville

John Gable, Medina County

Liz likes life at her new home. She has lots of work for a big family. Gives address to John P. Gable in Mountville.

12 2/6/1870 Anna Bausman, Millersville

John Gable, Ohio Anna (daughter of Abraham and Anna) is in school, Liz in love with old Joe, refers to John going home, Anna's asking about boys in Ohio

13 2/6/1870

George & Sallie Klugh, John B. Bausman, Lancaster

John Gable, Ohio Liz and Bausman family are well. The "father" Abraham Koppes is mentioned.

17 12/11/1870 Liz Gable, Mountville

John Gable, Ohio

Barb says that Mariah (Elizabeth Gable?) is married to Levi Stoner and they have a young daughter, William Gable living with Aunt Kitty (his grandmother) Wants to know why her brother Sam doesn't send his picture.

This section only includes discussion of the letters from the PA Gables and related PA people. See the

document about Benjamin Gable for more information about the letter collection.

One of the things I noticed was how frequently Aunt Kity (Catherine Klugh Gable) was mentioned in the

letters. She was called Kitty as evidenced by this newspaper article when her daughter-in-law's father Joseph

Hess committed suicide in 1878. Miami Hess was the wife of Jacob Klugh Gable (1849-1933). The "Kitty

Klug Inn" was actually the Black Bear tavern run by Catherine Gable's father Jacob Klugh until his death in

1864.

Using DNA to Prove the Connection:

Below is a chart showing DNA matches between people descended from John Gable's OH branch (Catherine,

Benjamin and Henry) across the top and from John Gable's PA branch (Jacob) in the first column. This table

does not include myself and my sister Martha because we're descended from both Benjamin and Jacob.

You Can Help: I would like to find some higher matches. It would help if anyone descended from any of the

couples named in the chart (especially Jacob) who have taken the Ancestry DNA test would contact me. I can

tell you how to look for matches to John Gable's Ohio children. Please contact me at [email protected].

Jacob Gebel and Elizabeth Hambright

Elizabeth Hambrecht (Hambright) was born to Georg Hambrecht (1749-1826) and his wife Anna Maria

(Schindel) (1755-1828) on June 17, 1793 and christened on December 22, 1793 according to the following

record from Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, MI. Family records list her death as February 17, 1852. The

Hambrecht family lived in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, PA. Georg Hambrecht’s headstone is now

located at the Landis Valley Farm Museum in Lancaster, PA.

Elizabeth Hambrecht Birth Ledger Page 2 Jacob Gabel Headstone

3

Georg Freidrich Schindel’s will confirms that his daughter Anna Maria Schindel was married to George

Hambright:

“… It is further my bequest that my property shall be equally divided among my children who are George

Schindel, and my daughter Anna Maria married to George Hambright, … ”

Trinity Lutheran Church was not able to find a birth record for Jacob Gable/Gebel. Mabel Musser Kraiss

(Elizabeth Gable Klugh’s granddaughter) believed that he was born January 28, 1793 and died January 16,

1872. Based on the 1850 and 1870 census, it’s more likely he was born in 1794. The 1850 census lists him

and his wife Elizabeth as 56 on 9/9/1850. The 1870 census shows him living in the household of daughter

Elizabeth Gable Klugh and lists him as 76 on 7/27/1870.

It is not known who Jacob Gable's parents were. The most likely possibility is that he is the son or nephew of

John Gable of Manheim Township and about 1830 Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio. John Gable was

the son of Wilhelm Gebel of Manheim township. Many of John's brothers still lived in Manheim township

until at least 1810 or 1820. Another possibility is that he is related to John Gable and Elizabeth Marzall of

Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Wilhelm Gebel of Lancaster Borough or Henry Gebel and Susannah of

Manor Township. (See Wilhelm Gebel and Wives document for more information.)

Census records

Birth years: Jacob 1793, Elizabeth 1793, William 1817, Elizabeth 1822, Jacob 1825, Henry 1827

The 1830 census shows Jacob Gebel living in Manheim township. The Family Record of his son William

states that William was born in Manheim township in Oct 1817. The obituary of his daughter Elizabeth states

that Elizabeth was born in Manheim township north of Petersburg (today East Petersburg) in Feb 1822. The

birth frakturs for his sons Jacob and Henry state they were born in East Hempfield township in July 1825 and

September 1827. Jacob's age is wrong but all of the other ages match. It is possible in the early years they

spent the summers in East Hempfield township and the winters in Manheim township. This would make sense

if they returned to live with the more established Manheim township Gebels.

Jacob and Elizabeth’s children

Jacob and Elisabeth had at least four children: William, Elizabeth, Jacob and Henry. Birth records exist for all

four children which list their parents as Jacob Gable and his wife Elizabeth (a daughter of Geo. Hambright).

William was born on Oct 20, 1817 in Manheim Township and died on Sep 4, 1851 in Mountville, Lancaster

Elizabeth Gable Klugh obituaries:

Slightly different version7:

Mrs. Elizabeth Klugh, widow of Charles Klugh,

died yesterday morning at 2:30 o'clock at the home of

her son-in-law, M.G. Schindle, at Mountville, from

acute indigestion and infirmities due to old age, she

being in her eighty-seventh year. Mrs. Klugh retired on

Saturday evening in her usual health, about 2 o'clock

yesterday morning she summoned her daughter and

expired shortly afterwards.

Deceased was the daughter of the late Jacob and

Elizabeth Gable. She was born in Manheim Township,

north of Petersburg.

For a number of years she resided east of

Mountville. Her husband died forty-six years ago and

she had resided with her daughter for the past thirty

years.

Deceased was a member of the Mountville

Reformed Church, the following children survive:

Jacob H. Klugh of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Mary Musser, of

Mountville; Mrs Barbara Shindle.

The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at

1:30 o'clock from the home of her daughter in

Mountville. Interment will be in the Mountville

Cemetery.

I assume this means that Elizabeth was born in Manheim Township. We know she lived in East Hempfield township by 1825 because her siblings Jacob and Henry were born there (see their birth frakturs below).

As you can see in the 1864 map8 below, "Manheim Township, north of Petersburg" doesn't really make sense

because no part of Manheim Township is north of Petersburg. Wilhelm Gebel lived slightly northwest of

Oregon P.O. in Manheim township, but we know of other sources that many of his children had moved into

Lancaster and other areas surrounding the northeast corner of Manheim township.

Jacob Gable was born July 4, 1825 in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, PA. It is unknown when

he died or if he married. I didn’t find him in any census record, but I don’t have a matching record 1830

census record for his father either.

Jacob Gable Birth Fraktur, July 4, 1825

In 1880, Jacob Gable lived in Marietta Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and worked as a Couchman.

Son Henry Gable was born on September 16, 1827 and married Mary Klugh in July 1852. I assume Mary

Klugh is related to the siblings Catherine Klugh and Charles Klugh who married Henry's siblings William and

Elizabeth Gable, but was unable to identify their parents. Henry was a blacksmith and lived in East Hempfield

Township at the time of the wedding.

About the Hambright Family:

The Hambrecht family (including Hans Hambrect, Adam Ambright, Conrad Ambright, Viet Hambreght and

(not listed) children Eva Catherine, Heinrich and Frederick) arrived in Philadelphia via Rotterdam on October

27, 1738 aboard the English ship St. Andrews, Captain Steadman, master. The father, Hans Conrad

Hambrecht, died shortly after arriving in America. His oldest son Johann Adam reared his younger siblings.

The Hambright family came from Neunstetten, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. Johann Adam Hambrecht

lived in Manheim Township and was a farmer and soldier. He rendered material aid by purchasing supplies

and enlisting soldiers in Lancaster County. His younger brother Colonel Frederick Hambright was famous for

the battle of Kings Mountain in NC during the Revolutionary War.

Son Johann Georg Hambright was a Lieutenant in Captain Martin Weybright's Company in the Lancaster

County Militia during the Revolutionary War and was a farmer in Manheim Township. Children: George,

Michael, Adam, Anna Maria, Rosina, Frederick, Martin, and Elizabeth.

William Gabel was the oldest son of Jacob Gabel and Elizabeth Hambright. His wife Catherine Klugh was the

daughter of Jacob Klugh and Maria Peters. They were married in 1840. According to the 1850 census they

lived in the same house as father in law Jacob Klugh in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County,

Pennsylvania and William was a blacksmith. William died in 1851. According to the 1860 Census Catherine

Klugh Gable and her children continued to live with her father. Her profession was "domestic". Jacob Klugh

ran the Black Bear Inn on the Lancaster and Columbia turnpike one half mile east of Mountville. In 1860 Jacob

Klugh was listed as retired and his wife Mary as Hotel. Jacob Klugh died in 1864. In 1870 Catherine Gable

was living next door to her sister in law Eliza Gable Klugh, wife of her brother Charles Klugh. She was listed

as keeping hotel (see below).

Below is an 1875 map of Mountville13

which shows the location of the Black Bear Hotel and also the residence

of Catherine Gable. She was still living in the same location in 1899 according to another map.14

Also

living nearby are Frederick Mann, husband of Catherine Gable's daughter Mary Catherine and Levi M. Stoner,

husband of Catherine Gable's daughter Elizabeth. Census records also show Jacob Klugh and his daughter in

law Elizabeth Gable Klugh, daughter of Jacob Gable and sister of Catherine Klugh Gable's husband William

living nearby. Also, nearby is the home of Anna and Elizabeth Neff, which you'll hear more about later.

A Sad Story

William and Catherine Gable's son Jacob K. Gable married Miami Hess, daughter of Joseph Hess. Joseph Hess

worked in the hotel business and unfortunately came to a very sad end. His descendant, Douglas Baldwin, sent

me this sad 1878 newspaper clipping. After my earlier research into the Klugh family and also of Catherine

Gable, I immediately associated "Kitty Klug Inn" with the Black Bear tavern15

. It appears very likely that

Catharine Klugh Gable probably spent some time working at the Black Bear tavern most of her life and after

her father's death people started to call it the Kitty Klug Inn.

15

This drawing is from the Mountville 200 Years 1814-2014 Anniversary Book, p. 15. The original source is the Mountville 175

Anniversary Book, page 15. In the Mountville 175 Years book it says "The earliest known business built in the mid 1700's was the

Black Bear Hotel at 325 E Main St. In its last years as a dwelling, it was torn down about 1908 and its beams used to build a new

barn. Mrs A.G. Hess painted this picture of it from her early memories of it." There is no known photo of it. Mrs. Kathryn Drumm

Hess (1885-1993) was the wife of Dr. Ammon Gross Hess, a physician in Mountville. According to 1910 - 1940 census records she

lived in Mountville.

Death Of Joseph Hess

The York Daily 03 May 1878 Friday

The suicide occurred on 2 May 1878 on a farm owned by J. Neff east of Mountville. J. Neff is not

on the 1875 map, but A&E Neff is listed as residence right next to Mann and Stoner residences by

the railroad. Frederick Mann and Levi M.Stoner are the husbands of Catherine Klugh Gable's

daughters Mary Catherine and Elizabeth.

In 1880 Frederick Mann and his family lived with Elizabeth Neff, age 64 "Aunt" in West Hempfield

Township. Based on a FindAGrave entry16

I found that Elizabeth had a sister named Anna and a

brother named Joseph which I assume are A & E and J. Neff. They lived in Mountville and

Millersville.

Henry Gable and Mary (Klugh?)

William K. Gable (son of Jacob Gable's son, Henry Gable and Mary Klugh) is described below.

WILLIAM K. GABLE.20 For twenty-four years Mr. Gable has been in the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad

Company, having risen from the position of brakeman to the more responsible post of engineer. In the discharge

of these duties he has exhibited the keen intelligence, quick perception and rugged honesty which have

characterized him through life. He was born in the township of West Hempfield, Dec. 15, 1852. His father,

whose Christian name is Henry, was born in 1827. He is by trade a blacksmith, but ceased active toil many

years ago, and is passing life's evening in well earned repose. The name of Mr. Gable's mother before marriage

was Marl Cluke (assume this is Mary Klugh). She was born in 1831, and passed away Oct. 4, 1891. Both she

and her husband were earnest members of the Reformed Church. They came to Columbia to reside in 1877, and

were the parents of four children : William K., Harry H., Anna and Martin. Harry H. is a Pennsylvania

Company's flagman and lives in Reading. Anna is the wife of John Kleinfelter, of Cumberland county. Martin is

also a railroad man, his home being in Reading.

William K. Gable remained at home until he had passed his thirteenth year, when, a mere boy in point of age,

yet full of pluck and grit, he found his way to Chicago, 111. For a year he attended school there, and for three

years worked in a box factory. In 1870 he returned to Lancaster county, finding employment as an apprentice in

a blacksmith shop in Mountville, where he remained for three months. From Mountville, he went to Lancaster,

where he passed six months. The next eighteen months he spent in Mt. Joy. Having learned the trade he readily

found employment in Harrisburg as a journeyman during the three and a half years following. He subsequently

found work at his trade at Pittsburg and at other points, but his natural impulse was toward the exciting, perilous

(and sometimes underpaid) life of a railroad man. His yearning was gratified in 1876, when he entered the

Pennsylvania Company's service as a brakeman. Six months later he was made a fireman ; and after riding in

the cab for five years and eleven months in that capacity, he was promoted to the position of engineer. He is a

member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and in politics is a Republican. Both himself and family

attend the Lutheran Church.

He married, June 18, 1878, Sally E. Jeffers, who was born at Lancaster, April 3, 1857. Her father, John, was a

Union soldier, who sacrificed an arm in his country's service. He died in 1864, in his forty-first year. Mrs.

Gable's mother's name before marriage was Catherine Lingars. Mrs. Jeffers survived her husband for five years,

and died in 1869, aged forty-two years. Mrs. Gable was their only child. Her mother, however, married again,

her second husband being Benjamin Roodman. The issue of the second marriage was one daughter, Anna, who

married William Noxtoof, of Lancaster.

Twelve children have been born to the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Gable: Albert, Harry, Florence, William,

Mattie and Stella (twins), John, Irene, Greda, Edna and Alex (twins), and Howard. Five survive and live at

home with their parents: Albert, Harry, Florence, Stella and Howard.
