100th Anniversary Celebration
Letter from the president
100 Years of ServiceIn 2014, the Alamance Chamber is
celebrating its 100th year in business. We have recently held a two-part Annual Meeting event to kick off our centennial year.
Though the organization was begun a few years earlier, 1914 is the year in which the Chamber was officially incorporated; and, it has since played an integral role, in ways large and small, in helping shape Alamance County as we know it today.
Two local historians, Don Bolden, retired publisher of the Times-News, and Avery Thomas, local accountant, civic leader, and Past Chamber Chairman, have collected a history of the people and events which have served to determine the development of the community and the Chamber.
Among the articles in that collection, is a report of the Chamber’s Annual Meeting of 1914. In reading the speaker’s remarks, it struck me that his message then remains relevant today. His main point was that people, working for their individual interests, can boost their individual success by also working, collectively, for the greater good. The speaker, E.S.W. Dameron, put it this way:
“In every city, there are two great forces which inspire and shape its activities and determine its growth and destiny – the individual and social. Each of these forces must be recognized and emphasized in the building of every City.
Every citizen has both an individual and social duty to perform. His individual duties would confine him to his own personal business and cause him to forget his social relations and that he is his brother’s keeper. His social relations would remind him that no man can live to himself or die to himself, and that the interest of the individual is inseparately linked with the interest of society. These are the two fundamental laws of human society and human progress and one is as absolute as the other.”
Fortunately, for our community and the Chamber, many people, over the decades, subscribed to this idea and contributed their time, money, and energy to advancing progress individually, in their own interests, as well as collectively, often through the Chamber, for the greater good.
It is those people, in each successive generation over 100-years, who have shaped the community we are and made the Chamber the venerable community institution it is today.

New Jobs, Investment for Alamance County“What a positive way to end 2013,” said Governor Pat McCrory when announc-ing Walmart (Project Swordfish) locating a perishable foods warehouse and distri-bution facility in Alamance County. With just two weeks to go in 2013, the com-pany announced their plans for a new 450,000-square-foot facility to employ 450 people and represent a capital investment of $100 million. This announcement was a positive end to not only the year, but to 18 months of work by the large team of local and state individuals and organizations that worked with the com-pany to identify, analyze and decide on the final location in Alamance County.
In addition to Walmart, 2013 was a strong year for economic development in Alamance County. Four companies announced plans to establish or expand op-erations for a total of $125 million investment in facility and equipment and over 500 new jobs (figures include Walmart).

And the Good News ContinuesWith less than a month into 2014, the county has already had two companies announce plans to expand in the area. Fitzpak specializes in consumer plastic packaging and will be renovating and adding equipment to its Graham facility. ARCA has announced plans to expand assembly operations for its cash handling machines used by banks and financial institutions. They will be adding jobs to their current facility in Mebane to manage the increase in business.

NC Commerce Secretary Decker to Address Focus on Readiness 3 Investors
Support from the Alamance County Economic Development Founda-tion (ACEDF) is critical for economic development success in Alamance County. The ACEDF is funded through private contributions raised two years ago through a campaign called “Focus on Readiness 3.” At this year’s annual report to the inves-tor group, NC Department of Com-merce Secretary, Sharon Decker, will be addressing the members about the development of the new private nonprofit structure for busi-ness recruitment and marketing. The address to local business executives is very timely as a “Jobs Plan: Rec-ommended Strategies for Economic Growth” was just recently delivered to Gov. McCrory by the NC Eco-nomic Development Board. The re-port addressed needs ranging from a new branding strategy, to iden-tifying targeted industry clusters, to assessing strengths and weaknesses, to incentive structures.
If you would like to read a copy of the report, contact Andrea Flem-ing at [email protected] or 336-228-1338.

workforce & leadership DEVELOPMENT
Let’s help STEM grow Lots of people are talking about STEM right now but it is certainly more than a trend. We know that we need future graduates with creative spirits, prob-lem-solving skills, the abil-ity to work in a team and competency in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.
Recently, a group of chamber members met with Melaine Rickard, ABSS Specialist for STEM Educa-tion, to discuss the need for STEM skills and partner-ship possibilities. The ABSS vision for STEM education is to provide engaging and innovative programming for students and teachers that is focused on raising participation and excel-lence in STEM disciplines and skills. Collaborations, including those with com-munity partners, higher education, and state and national organizations, will support teaching and learning during the school day and during unique extra-curricular activities. What can we do to support their efforts to incorporate STEM activi-ties into the curriculum and create extra-curricular activities at all grade levels? We need community partners who can serve as cur-riculum and industry advisors, classroom speakers, and partners for STEM clubs. If you would like to be included in future planning meet-ings or can volunteer as described above, please contact Barbara Massey, Vice President of Workforce and Leadership Development.
Melaine Rickard, ABSS STEM Spe-cialist, is clutching a silicon wafer which holds integrated circuits used in all our electronic devices. She is pictured in the clean room at the Monteith Research Center on NC State’s Centennial Cam-pus. She was able to see how the crystals that make up the wa-fer are grown, how the wafer is constructed, and then etched to create the desired circuit as part her Kenan Fellowship with the FREEDM Center at NC State.
Junior AchievementDo you value workforce experience in education? Do you see the im-portance of teaching lessons from a professional in the field? Do you find significance in building relationships be-tween businesses and the classroom? If the answer is yes, Junior Achievement (JA) of Central North Carolina can pro-vide an excellent opportunity for you.
JA is a program that empowers students to make a connection between what they learn in school and how it can be applied in the real world. Corporate and community volunteers spend time in the classroom with students teaching them skills in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. Though this may sound like a challenge, with the format JA has perfected, teaching is simple and fun! From kindergarten through twelfth grade, JA provides the lesson plans and resources needed to teach them. All that is required of you is to bring those lessons to life with your experience and enthusiasm.
Volunteering for JA is a rewarding experience for both you and the students you teach. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and would like to learn more information such as the time commit-ment involved or how to get placed in a classroom, see the con-tact information below for JA’s Program Manager.

February 22 is FAFSA Day FAFSA Day is a program offered by the College Foundation of North Carolina, the North Carolina Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and the State Employees’ Credit Union each February. Completing and submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the single most important thing you can do to get assistance paying for college. The U.S. Department of Educa-tion uses the FAFSA to determine students’ eligibility for federal stu-dent aid. Many state governments and colleges also use the FAFSA to determine eligibility for nonfederal aid. On FAFSA Day, Saturday February 22, 2014 college financial aid officers and other volunteers will help students complete their FAFSA forms. The program is open to students who plan to attend college in the 2014-15 academic year.
