. Philippians 3: 7-11
MAKING DISCIPLES:
WHO ARE KNOWING GOD MORE FULLY
How does a person maintain a lifelong commitment to Jesus?
It’s not always easy. It’s often easier to avoid bad behavior
than to get involved in good, world changing, behavior. Jesus
wants both. So, how do we do it? We need a support system.
We need a sense of belonging. We need to be part of a group
with similar goals and aspirations. Did Jesus make any provi-
sion for that? Of course He did. It’s called the church. Any
fully developed follower of Jesus is going to be active in
church. Why? I want to give you 5 reasons.
1. JESUS WANTS IT. How do we know that?
a. Jesus started the church and is building it
(Matthew 16:17-19). He is building it by the Holy Spirit
through leadership, and each person doing their part
(Ephesians 4:11-13, 15-16).
b. The church is the body of Jesus (1 Corinthians 12:27;
Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:15-19).
c. The church is also His bride (Ephesians 5:25-27, 30-
32).
d. The Greek word for “church” is “Ekklesia” which means
“ called out ones .” It is used 116 times.
e. People who were saved were automatically part of the
church (Acts 2:40-41; 46-47).
f. It is His way of resolving conflict among His followers
(Matthew 18:15-18).
g. It’s where He shows up in a special way (Matthew
18:19-20).
h. Satan and the world want to destroy the church be-
cause Jesus wants it so badly (Acts 8:1-3).
2. JESUS DESERVES IT
a. Jesus left His throne in heaven, lived a sinless life, was
opposed every step of the way, and died on the cross for
our sins. He deserves our love and gratitude and church
is one way we express that.
b. After everything He has done for us the very least we
can do for Him is be active in the church He started and
died for.
3. WE NEED IT (Hebrews 10:24-25)
a. It’s not easy living for Jesus. We need to be encouraged,
loved, supported, instructed, motivated, and corrected, as
well as providing these things for others. That’s why we
use the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16).
b. We need to spend time with others who are trying to
live for Jesus.
c. We need to know that there will be a faithful group of
believers gathering every Sunday.
d. We need the opportunities the church offers to impact
the world (Galatians 6:10).
4. THE WORLD NEEDS IT
a. Can you imagine what the world would be like without
the church’s influence? Granted, the church isn’t perfect
because people aren’t perfect, but the world is so much
better because of the church.
b. Without the church the message of Jesus would have
faded away years ago; crime, violence, poverty, and im-
morality would run rampant.
5. BECAUSE OF WHAT IT DOES . The church basically
does 5 things.
a. Worship (Matthew 22:36-40) – Biblical worship in-
volves: joy and gratitude (Psalm 100), new songs (Psalm
96:1), praise and offerings (Psalm 96:7-9), humility and
listening (Psalm 95:6-8), multiple instruments and danc-
ing (Psalm 150), spirit and truth (John 4:23-24), being
engaged (Mark 7:5-8), a lifestyle that matches (Isaiah
1:12-18; Romans 12:1). Evangelism (1 Peter 3:15).
Fellowship (Acts 2:42-47). _____________ (Matthew
28:20). ____________ (1 Peter 4:10).
KEY: WANTS, started, building, body, bride, called out ones, con-
flict, shows up, destroy, DESERVES, love, gratitude, NEED, spend
