Our Mission:New York Cares meets pressing

community needs by mobilizing

caring New Yorkers in volunteer service.

New York Cares | Annual Report 2010 1

Dear Friends,

New York Cares makes it possible for all New Yorkers to work together to better our city. Since 1987, our innovative model — creating programming that meets critical agency needs and providing and managing volunteers— has been a critical lifeline for organizations serv- ing New York City’s most vulnerable residents.

In 2010, we expanded our programs by 20% to support a city still reeling from the eco- nomic downturn. The 1,200 nonprofits, city agencies and public schools with which we work— our Community Partners— relied on our programming and teams of volunteers to maintain services in the face of severe budget cuts and intense community need.

In November, we won the prestigious Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation. The Drucker Institute at Claremont Graduate University recognized New York Cares’ Volunteer Engagement Scale (VES), our tool for measuring volunteer engagement through the length of service, amount of service and degree of leadership demonstrated by volun- teers. The VES is the foundation of our volunteer programs and helps increase retention rates, while building leadership skills among our volunteers.

We thank all of you— our funders, volunteers, Community Partners and numerous friends— who have contributed to our accomplishments this year. We send special thanks to Mayor Bloomberg’s NYC Service initiative for granting us the city’s largest team of NYC Civic Corps members again this year. This critical resource allowed us to expand during a challenging economic time, helping 400,000 at-risk New Yorkers build better lives.

Of course, the challenges that many New Yorkers face didn’t start with the recession, and there’s much more to do. With your ongoing support, we will continue to meet the challenges facing the city and our neighbors in need.

With best wishes for 2011,

Gail B. Harris, Board President Gary Bagley, Executive Director

A Lifeline for Community PartnersSince our founding in 1987, New York Cares has used the power of volunteerism to help our Community Partners effectively achieve their mis-sions, while accomplishing long-term impact in the neighborhoods they serve. Our innovative approach bridges the gap between partner needs and lim-ited resources by allowing partners to effectively outsource their volunteer management to New York Cares.

The Result: Agencies can augment their core activities and client services through our varied volunteer programs. In 2010, we developed programs that helped 1,200 Community Partners fulfill their organization goals, and then recruited, trained and managed teams of volunteers to deliver these programs.

Our Strategy: To focus on the breadth of our projects resulting in services being delivered wherever they are needed; and the depth of our programs by collaborating with partners to create results-driven services.

Last year, New York Cares increased our programs by 20% in response to the city’s growing community needs.

Our programs help struggling New Yorkers in two primary ways:

Meeting Immediate Needs Volunteers provide warm coats to people who are cold, companionship to lonely seniors, hot meals to people who are hungry and care for shelter animals.

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Volunteers work with children to enhancetheir math and reading skills, help unemployed adults find jobs, teach immigrants English and much more.

SAT Exam Preparation Through our longstanding partnership with Kaplan, Inc., volunteers provided SAT preparation to 844 low-income high school students who otherwise could not afford private tutoring. As a result, these students improved their test scores—often by hundreds of points—and were accepted to such prestigious universities as Cornell and New York University.

Academic Support One-on-one attention is key to enhancing aca-demic performance. In 2010, our volunteers devot-ed 34,000 hours to helping public school students develop a love of learning and improve their skills in math, reading, writing and science.

Activities for Children with Special NeedsVolunteers worked with 2,500 children and teens with disabilities. Projects included teaching cook-ing and nutrition to autistic children and running races, ice skating and more with children who have developmental disabilities.

Arts and Recreation Volunteers expanded the horizons of 14,400 children living in homeless shelters, hospitals and low-income neighborhoods through art activities, sports and cultural outings. They inspired creativity, built confidence and taught vital teamwork skills—and had lots of fun along the way.

One third of New York City children, ages five and younger, live in families whose total income is below the federal poverty line. These children are at a greater risk of dropping out of school, turning to drugs and crime or continuing a life of poverty. By reaching kids early, we can help break this cycle by setting them on a different path—one focusedon learning and self-sufficiency. Our children’s programs include:

Winter Wishes for Kids and Families Volunteers answered 34,000 gift requests from children, teens and families during the holidays. The letters showed the continued impact of the recession, with many asking for basic needs. One little girl wrote, “May I have diapers for my baby brother?” This program was generously sponsored by Julie Turaj and Robert Pohly.

Tax Preparation and Financial LiteracyOur volunteers provided free tax preparation ser-vices—delivered in partnership with ARIVA and the New York City Financial Network Action Consor-tium—to low-income New Yorkers that resulted in 10,300 tax returns and $18.7 million in tax credits and refunds. Volunteers also helped participants enhance their fiscal awareness and develop family budgets through our Financial Literacy program.

English Language TutorialsParticipants in our English language programs are recent immigrants who want to be successful in their new country and recognize the importance of speaking English to achieve this goal. Our vol-unteers played a critical role in realizing this dream by providing U.S. citizenship exam preparation and English training, which helped these New Yorkers better navigate their daily lives.

Adult Programs

Now more than ever, our adult volunteer programs act as a safety net for struggling New Yorkers, helping them to build brighter futures for themselves and their families through free tax preparation services and intensive career development.

Our adult programs include:

Job ReadinessThrough one-on-one and small group career development assistance, volunteers helped adults prepare to enter or re-enter the job market. They worked with participants to create and revise résumés and cover letters, plan for job interviews and learn computer skills essential to enhancing their job searches.

Programs for Adults with Special NeedsVolunteers worked with adults with disabilities to enliven their minds and spirits in a variety of ways. They created art and enjoyed recreational outings with developmentally challenged adults, recorded books for the blind and dyslexic and jogged with disabled and visually impaired runners.

Support for Elderly New YorkersMany elderly residents in nursing homes have no one to visit them other than their doctors. Volunteers provided much-needed companionship and engaged 8,500 senior citizens in recreational activities, such as reading, Bingo and social events.

Community Programs

Our volunteers helped individuals and families get by during challenging times, while also ensuring our city’s community parks, gardens and public schools remained healthy.

Our ongoing community programs include:

Parks and Gardens RestorationNew York City’s parks and gardens reduce pollution, provide recreational space and lift the spirits of all New Yorkers. From March through November, volunteers rolled up their sleeves to revitalize vital green spaces citywide.

Meal ServicesVolunteers prepared and served 266,000 nutritious meals to New Yorkers in need at community centers and homeless shelters.

Disaster ReadinessSince 2003, New York Cares has been designat-ed as the city’s lead organization for coordinating volunteers during citywide emergencies by the Office of Emergency Management.

School, Community Center, Library and Shelter RevitalizationThroughout the year, New York Cares volunteers painted, cleaned and rejuvenated these important community spaces.

Animal CareVolunteers spent 14,000 hours ensuring 25,472 animals waiting to be adopted remained happy, healthy and socialized at shelters citywide.

Hands On New York Day (April)Five thousand volunteers gave 70 parks and gardens a spring greening on the 16th annual Hands On New York Day, sponsored by HSBC Bank USA, N.A. Volunteers raked leaves, pruned trees and bushes, repaired fences, planted hundreds of shrubs and bulbs and removed winter debris to prepare spaces for summer.

New York Cares Day (October)Seven thousand New Yorkers transformed 116 schools into inspiring learning environments by revitalizing playground spaces and organizing libraries on the city’s largest volunteer day for schools. In celebration of this day, students also participated in our “Students Give Back” mural contest with one lucky winner painting his mural design at PS 171M.

New York Cares Coat Drive (December)For 22 years, the New York Cares Coat Drive has provided desperately needed coats to homeless people, recent immigrants who arrived with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, seniors on fixed incomes and others in need. In 2010, with the support of Presenting Sponsor Health Plus, we distributed 58,000 coats to help low-income and homeless New Yorkers survive the harshest winter in decades.

National Days of ServiceNew York Cares offered a range of volunteer opportunities for New Yorkers eager to give time on MLK Day of Service (January), 9/11 Day of Service (September) and during National Volunteer Week (April).

In 2010, Youth Service

volunteers provided crime

prevention programs at 41 high-risk

public schools.

12

Youth Service ClubsIn 2010, we partnered with 41 schools in low-income neighborhoods to offer valuable volunteer opportunities and service-learning activities to 2,300 students. Youth volunteers participated in monthly service learning pro-grams, followed by team-based volunteer projects.

Teen Service Team This new program provided individual high school students with the opportunity to participate in commu-nity service. Students met weekly throughout the year to learn about and deliver a range of service projects citywide.

Program focus areas for youth include:

Crime Prevention Students learned about the importance of crime prevention by painting murals that inspired their peers to find their “anti-drug” and teaching young children about personal safety.

Environmental Sustainability New York Cares partnered with organizations to teach Youth Service students about ecological sustainability in an urban environment. Through a series of 33 hands-on projects, volunteers learned how to test water quality and identify and remove invasive species—knowledge that they then shared with elementary schoolchildren.

Hunger Student volunteers served more than 2,100 meals in food pantries and soup kitchens and learned how to combat hunger in their communities. They also learned about nutritional issues facing low-income populations and how food rescue opera-tions work in New York City.

Leadership DevelopmentNew York Cares taught 115 students to plan, recruit and manage their peers at service proj-ects—vital life skills that will have a lasting impact.

Youth Helping Youth Youth Service Club volunteers completed 75 proj-ects that served elementary schoolchildren. They provided added resources to afterschool programs and acted as positive role models—helping young children develop a love of science and reading.

New York Cares’ award-winning Youth Service program cultivates the next generation of volunteers. Our goal is to inspire young people to become lifelong contributors to their communities by educating them about social issues, engaging them in youth-led volunteering and developing their leadership skills.
