Chapter News

The Kamloops and Area Chapter MS Connection Newsletter is intended to provide news and information to people living with MS, their families, caregivers, medical professionals and other stakeholders. Information/opinions contained in this newsletter are obtained from sources believed to be reliable, but their accuracy cannot be guaranteed. The MS Society does not approve, endorse or recommend specific products or services and respects an individual’s right to make their own health management decisions. However, we can provide information to assist people in their decision process. For specific, personalized information, please consult your physician or other health care professional.

I’ve been a Programs and Services Coordinator with the MS Society of Canada since September 2012. I live in Kelowna with my husband, and spoiled cat Snickie! Prior to my work with the MS Society, I worked for over 20 years managing programs for adults with developmental disabilities, and was a part-time instructor for the Special Needs Worker Program at Okanagan College. If you have any questions about programs and services, or would just like to say hello, please feel free to call me at 1-800-268-7582 extension 7299 or e-mail me at [email protected].

A Hello From Sherry Wezner:

Programs and Services Update

We would like to thank the MS Society Kamloops and Area Chapter for welcoming and allowing us to work with their agency this semester on our community project. Our community project entailed identifying resources and supports within the community and compiling them into a local resource manual for the chapter office. The resource manual includes services we believe can empower people affected by MS and their families by improving access to their community resources in an organized

and timely fashion. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with the MS Society in this capacity as it has increased our knowledge on community supports which will help us with our future nursing practice and the skills obtained on locating these services will follow us through our careers.

2016 Comedy for a Cause a Howling Success

Comedy for a Cause on March 5th at Cactus Jacks nightclub was a great night of hilarious comedy.

Greg Kettner opened the night with enter-taining stories, while Winston Spear closed off the night with a dance.

Between ticket sales, 50/50, Balloon Pop, and Silent Auction, over $6,000 was raised.

The MS Society would like to thank all the generous businesses who donated items for our Balloon Pop and Silent Auction, as well as to all the volunteers, and to everyone who attended this fun event.

Special thanks to Cactus Jacks for hosting and to Accent Inns for sponsoring this event.

On Family Day, February 8th, a dedicated group of cyclists hopped up on stationary bikes and rode all day to end MS. The In-door GranFondo and Family Day Festival was a fun day which saw over 1,800 visitors in addition to the 36 cyclists. This event raised over $7,000!

The MS Society would like to say a special thank you all the great participants and vol-unteers, including the organizing committee.

Thanks also to the businesses and organiza-tions who sponsored this event:

These groups operate independently, supported by the MS Society of Canada with information and resources. The Kamloops and Area Chapter recognizes the importance of support in one’s own community, and providing a means for

individuals and families to reach out and connect with each other. Each community is unique in the kind of support that is available.

World MS Day - May 25th

This might be thanks to support from family and friends, adaptations and flexibility in the home and workplace, support from MS organisations, effective treatment and lifestyle choices, a steady income, or even just a shift in attitude.

What's the idea?

By sharing examples of independence from lots of different countries, we want to inspire people to challenge perceptions of what people with MS can do.

To give you some inspiration, we’ve spoken to people with MS from around the world and asked them to share their “MS doesn’t stop me” story.

How to get involved

Social media

We’re asking you to tell us how you’re independent by completing the phrase “MS doesn’t stop me...”

Share your photos and stories on social media and don’t forget to use the hashtag #strongerthanMS. We’ll feature your posts on the World MS Day website www.worldmsday.com

Events

On our website we’ll map all of the events that are happening around the globe for World MS Day. You can find out what your local MS organisation is doing near you or add your own event.

Advocacy

You can use the campaign to shout about all of the things that people with MS are doing every day. You could use the toolkit materials on the website to support advocacy around employment, independence, access or anything else that is important for people with MS.

Together we’ll generate thousands of messages that celebrate the huge range of things that people with MS can do, raise awareness and inspire action around the world. Together we are #strongerthanMS.

A diagnosis of MS can turn your world upside down. Many people think that MS can stop you from living a ‘normal’ life, but this isn’t necessarily

the case. For World MS Day 2016 we’re celebrating all the ways that people affected by MS maintain independence and get on with their lives.
