Come in from the cold, as the Johnson County Public Library celebrates its eighteenth year of Winter Reading. We're challenging families to "Feed Your Mind, Read!" during the whole month of February.

JCPL hopes to encourage families to read together and to visit their library branch. Each time a patron or family visits the library, each person will receive a prize and a bonus ticket, up to four times. Ladies, it's time to clean out those closets! The Clark Pleasant Branch is seeking donations of gently used bridesmaid and prom dresses for a Prom Dress Swap. This is your opportunity to give new life to your formal wear and help area teens. All sizes, lengths, and styles of dresses are welcome, and donations of gently used shoes and accessories will also be accepted.

Beginning on Monday, January 7, donations can be dropped off at the Clark Pleasant Branch, located at 520 Tracy Road in New Whiteland. Please be sure that dresses are clean, in good repair, and are donated on hangers.

Students needing a prom dress can stop by the Clark Pleasant Branch on Saturday, March 9 and browse the collection. It is not necessary to donate a dress to receive a dress or other items. The event is free and runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Clark Pleasant Branch will donate any leftover dresses or other items to a local charity. For more information, please contact Adult Services Librarians Jen Hoffman or Kelly Schmidt at 317-535-6206.

They're here! After many years of wishing and hoping, the White River Branch has drive-up drop boxes! Now, instead of dodging through rain, snow, sleet, and hail (or sunshine as the case may be) you can pull your car up to one of our drop boxes and unload materials in either the Book drop box or the Audio-Visual (DVDs etc.) drop box.

Each morning, the circulation staff goes out to the drop boxes with one of their two motorized book carts, nicknamed Thing 1 and Thing 2, and retrieves the materials dropped off the night before. Then they back date the computer system to the previous day's date and check the items in. At 9:00 a.m. sharp, they make another trip to the drop boxes and collect anything that was returned between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

The drop boxes are emptied 2-3 times each day, though that will no doubt increase once Summer Reading begins.

  • Dr. Seuss coined the word “nerd” in his 1950 book If I Ran The Zoo. Fun Fact !

If you frequent the Franklin Branch, you have probably had the good fortune to meet and work with Linda Kilbert. Linda has been the Adult Services Manager at the Franklin Branch for the past ten and half years. She joined the Johnson County Public Library staff in 1999 as an Adult Services Librarian.

Born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana, Linda credits her father, who was an elementary and junior high band teacher, for her insatiable appetite for learning and helping other people. “I greatly admire my late father… [he] had the patience of a saint. He was humble, caring and good-natured. He had an analytical mind and was always striving to learn more. His faith was very important to him and every day he demonstrated what it meant to be a loving and faithful servant. I miss him a lot.”

After graduating high school, Linda attended the Cleveland Institute of Art where she earned a Bachelor in Fine Arts with a major in Medical Illustration, a degree she put to good use during her first post-college job was as a Graphic Artist in the Medical Illustration Department at the Indiana University School of Medicine. “I created posters, illustrations and graphics for physicians to use at conferences and in textbooks. Linda also did freelance illustration work for the Indianapolis Zoo.

Eventually, she began taking library science classes at Indiana University and went on to attain her Masters in Library Science. During her library science studies, she worked as a Reference Associate at the Indiana University School of Medicine Ruth Lilly Medical Library. Later, she became the Assistant Librarian at Mother Theresa Hackelmeier Memorial Library at Marian College (now University), working there for 5 years. “The challenge of research and digging deep to find answers is what drew me to a career in library science. I especially

enjoy helping patrons make discoveries regarding their family history research and putting together pieces of their genealogy puzzle.” Linda does a great deal of work promoting and maintaining the Franklin Branch’s Historical Room, an essential tool for local historians and genealogists.

Linda also puts her interest in wellness to work as the head of the Library’s staff wellness program, SWAT (Strategic Wellness Action Team). “It is wonderful to see colleagues make strides toward their goals [for] a healthier lifestyle and to realize their efforts are making a difference.”

When not at the Franklin Branch, Linda enjoys one of her many hobbies including photography, playing trombone in the Franklin Community Band, cooking, reading, doing word puzzles, gardening, hiking, bird-watching, or just being outside in the warm sunshine. Like many librarians, Linda’s interests in music and movies are varied and wide-ranging: from classical composers like Bach to the Carpenters; the original Star Wars trilogy to Sleepless in Seattle. But when asked about her favorite book, she gave the unequivocal answer, The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom, which tells the story of how middle-aged Dutch watchmaker, Corrie Ten Boom, became a heroine of the WWII Resistance, a survivor of Hitler's death camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century.

The next time you visit the Franklin Branch, be sure to stop by the reference desk when Linda is working and ask about the enormous amount of resources available to you in the Historical Room – or any other reference question that’s putting a hitch in your research project. She will put her detective skills to work to find your answer!

operator, and a general gopher. This was an exciting adventure for me. I had been raised on a farm in Northern Indiana, but I never felt as much a part of farm life as when I was working with and watching my husband and sons do work that they saw as a challenge and a fulfilling job.

As the boys grew and became involved with school activities, I decided to return to the classroom.

I began teaching sixth grade at Indian Creek Middle School in 1985. I later began teaching only sixth grade Social Studies. This became my favorite time of teaching. I continued until June of 2008. It was a very rewarding career, sometimes more so than others, but I did enjoy the time I spent there. I met many wonderful students and parents and other teachers.

As time went by, our sons each had children of their own. We have four grandchildren. I was fortunate to be able to spend time with them and took them to storytime at the Trafalgar Branch with Miss Vickie. They too loved the time they spent listening to her stories and participating in the crafts that she provided for them.

I feel that I have almost made a complete circle with the library. I am happy to be a part of the Friends and to be able to help provide opportunities for other children to be involved with the library and be transported to “distant lands” and magical places, if just for a few minutes.

I have much to learn about our library, and I hope that each of you will share your time and experience with me to help me be a good leader for the Friends.

Hello, allow me to introduce myself and 2013’s Friends of Johnson County Public Library Board Members. My name is Carol Spurgeon from Trafalgar, IN. My husband, David, and I have lived in the Franklin area since 1967. We both taught school in the Franklin School Corporation. David taught Vocational Agriculture at Franklin from 1966 to 1976 when he left to pursue his life long dream of farming. I taught at Union Elementary for one year then moved to Needham Elementary for the next five years before I left to start a family. We have two sons, Mathew and Jonathan.

I first became involved with the Johnson County Public Library while teaching. I would contact the librarians and they would send books to my classroom since the school’s library was limited at that time. This provided a wonderful opportunity for my students.

When our children were old enough to participate in storytimes, I took them to the Franklin Branch where they attended the weekly story hour presented by Avyce Hendricks. She had a soft accent and was able to transform their world into a magical time for an hour a week. They loved to listen to the stories then check out books to read at home.

We moved from the Franklin area to live in Trafalgar. First on the newly purchased FFA center for a year and a half then we moved to our current farm southwest of Trafalgar. David farms and raises beef cattle. He and our sons ran a successful hay baling operation and metal fabrication business for about 20 years. I spent my time being a liaison between the three balers, a food wagon
