Lord of the Harvest Tim Sievers

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” ~ Matthew 9:37-38

Detroit, known as the Motor City, in its heyday was a great industrial city and remains still home to the U.S. automotive industry with headquarters and major manufacturing facilities for Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler along with major automotive suppliers. As Detroit and its industry grew, people looked to escape the noise, pollution and other problems of the city and vacation in rural communities like my hometown, Clarkston, which, located just 45 miles to the north, in the early 20th century remained a farming community complete with its own mill. In fact, automotive magnate Henry Ford, himself would escape from the city for relaxation and recreation.

As the automotive industry flourished, Detroit flourished too and along with it, the desire of many to escape the city also grew. The surrounding villages and cities experienced steady growth until finally reaching the rural town of Clarkston which stands today near the northernmost edge of suburbia. As I grew up, I knew what a farm was - there was, after all, one working farm

remaining in Clarkston which grew hay. Unfortunately, agriculture was largely absent from my childhood. If we traveled north and west out of the suburbs there was plenty of agriculture – sugar beets, corn, asparagus, apples, peaches and cherries, but it wasn’t part of my everyday life. Living now in Palouse, agriculture is all around me. I’ve made friends with farmers, and I enjoy marking the changing seasons with the changing fields, from the dark brown freshly-tilled earth of spring to the light green of early summer and the gold of autumn which gives way to a blanket of white snow come wintertime. It’s magnificent to behold. While hard work and persistence are important to all farmers, I’ve learned here in the Palouse Region where we don’t irrigate our crops, that farming also is all about faith and prayer. From the tilling of soil to the planting of seed and the waiting – farming is having faith in the promise of the seed and that the labor invested in the sowing will yield a harvest. As harvest time approaches each year, I am reminded of a story from Matthew’s gospel regarding a different kind of harvest. Jesus had been traveling through the cities and villages teaching and proclaiming the gospel and healing every disease and affliction. When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them. He had compassion because he truly saw them – their brokenness and helplessness, how they were, “like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:35-36). Jesus then declares to the disciples:

“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Jesus isn’t speaking about a harvest of wheat, lentils or garbanzo beans, but a harvest of people for God’s kingdom. If the harvest is huge and the laborers are few, it makes the task of harvest seem overwhelming, if not impossible, for the Disciples and for us today. But, notice what Jesus says: “pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” The harvest already exists and so do the

laborers – the disciples are to pray earnestly that the Lord of the harvest will send laborers into the field to gather an already ripe harvest. The root of Jesus’ mission here is compassion while the root of mission for the Disciples and by extension, for us, is prayer. If we have faith in Jesus we must also be people of prayer. As F. Dale Bruner says, “faith is the mother of prayer and prayer the mother of mission…where there is prayer there is mission…where there is little prayer there is little mission.” In the coming months, as we look about us and see laborers in our fields, I want to encourage you to pray, because when we pray there is mission. Pray for the harvest and pray for the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers. And then, open your heart to the possibility that you might be one of the laborers he already has prepared to send into the fields for harvest. God of all power and peace, as Jesus sent his disciples out to heal the sick, cast out demons, gather the lost, raise the dead, and proclaim the nearness of your kingdom, make us ready to go and share the good news we have received; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lamp & Light Journey How you can participate Join us this summer as we strive to hide God’s word in our hearts through the Lamp & Light Journey! You can participate both at church as well as at home or even when you’re on the road! Here’s how: At Church | Each week, outside the sanctuary, we will post a new verse to memorize. On the resource table there will be 4x6 postcards of the same verse that you may take with you as a reminder or send to a friend. Additionally, there will be coloring sheets available for kids (or adults). At Home & On the Road | The verse also will be featured in our weekly e-mails, and on Facebook. If you’re interested in downloading the images for your computer desktop or mobile device, we encourage you to visit www.scripturetype.com, and click “Resources.” Encouragement | If you memorize all 16 verses and recite them to Tim Sievers by the end of September, you will receive a leather embossed bookmark to commemorate your achievement and encourage you to continue on the journey to hide God’s word in your heart. This summer, may we all turn to the scriptures as a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths – to guide us on the journey!

“Everybody Always” A Book Review Tina Laughary For author Bob Goff, life is full of reasons to celebrate. He owns his own helium tank and is known for handing out helium-filled balloons to celebrate just about any occasion. He also makes a regular practice of carrying medals with him at all times so he can award them for any behavior he witnesses that is worth celebrating (bravery,

perseverance, kindness, etc.). You see, for Bob, celebration is just one of the ways he has found to love people. Bob absolutely loves Jesus. He has made it his life’s mission not just to agree with Jesus but to actually obey Him. Agreeing and obeying are two very different things. It is pretty easy to read the Bible and agree with it. It is a much larger task to read the Bible and obey it. In Matthew 22, when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he said:

"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Goff likes to summarize Jesus’ words as: “love everybody always.” Bob has spent much of his adult life looking for ways to obey Jesus and love everybody. Celebration is just one of the ways he likes to do that. He also believes loving someone means serving them, being available to have a relationship with them and treating them the way Jesus would. Bob would be the first to admit that this is an impossible task without the help and guidance of God. In his newest book, Everybody Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks and Difficult People, he shares his journey of attempting to be obedient to Jesus’ call to love people. It turns out, when you make yourself ridiculously available to be used by God—He sends you into some ridiculous situations to love and care for people. Bob recounts many of these amazing stories in his book. Bob is a fun author to read. He has a way of telling amazing stories of being used by God in an incredibly humble way.

Reading his book has inspired me to become love by allowing God to love others through me. It seems like an overwhelming task, but I keep reminding myself to take it, as Bob suggests—just 30 seconds at a time. Are you having a difficult time loving those around you? Is it more common for you to be served than to serve? Are you finding yourself becoming cynical and seeing the worst in the world? Then I highly suggest you add Everybody Always to your summer reading list. It is sure to inspire you and renew your spirit.

Lament Joanne Wilson Yahweh, it is You alone who are God Almighty, Sovereign God, Holy, Righteous and Just. It is to You alone that I can truly look to and ask for help. This business Lord God of getting older, becoming less able to do the simplest of things wears down on me and causes me to fall into a place of sorrow, self-pity and sadness. Even Lord as I know that it is You alone who can help me, heal me and bring me back to a place of simple trust. Lord I know that only You can understand because for each of us this challenge is unique. You Lord are well aware of the struggles that I personally have, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I am so grateful for the fact that You are constantly and completely aware of what I am dealing with. I thank and praise You Lord God for You are with me at all times and in all events and circumstances of my life. I am thankful and aware that it is You who have poured out Your steadfast and faithful love into my heart through the Holy Spirit who You, Lord God have given to me. It is my heart that seeks after You, that knows Your healing, redeeming and restorative work within me; and for that I give You thanks and praise and rejoice that it is You alone who are my God. This word Lord God comes from my grateful and humble heart, Your servant, Joanne Wilson

Lament Betty Sawyer O Lord my God, I am troubled by the awful enemy of our bodies called cancer. It devours the life we once knew. It changes personalities as people go through treatments. It eats away at our very being. It is not fun to watch, as a caregiver. But I place my trust in you, O Lord, as we walk through this trial. I know in my heart that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character and character produces hope. I ask for that endurance O Lord. Only you and your comforting Spirit can give me the eternal hope to get me, and so many of my dear friends, through cancer diagnoses. So I praise you every day whether things go well or not. You are with me, my Rock and my Redeemer. I trust in you.

A Prayer of Lament Tim Sievers O LORD, My God, How long will you ignore my plea, my longing for peace, my desire for justice? The earth trembles under the weight of war, and the rivers run with blood, as nation ravages nation. Your people lay, slaughtered in temples of worship dedicated to your praise and glory, now laid waste by the rod of our enemies, houses of horror and despair. Fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, weep for the dead. Do you not hear the cries of your people? How long, O LORD, must the warmongers reign? How long must we fear? Will you forever stay your hand from justice? Yet, even in our darkness, you are our light. You alone are our hope. Holy are you, our strength and redeemer. By faith, our fathers walked in your ways, and you delivered them from the hands of our enemies. Our enemies you gave over to us. Be not far from us now, O LORD. In the face of destruction, you alone are our refuge and help. You alone are our light and hope. Behold, you have heard my petition, you have answered my cry. I will declare your praises from the gates of the city, and in the halls of your people, and all will know of your wondrous deeds. O God, our redeemer.

In June, Tim Sievers preached about lament and its use as a spiritual discipline. In that sermon, Tim shared a prayer of lament he had written and challenged the congregation to author their own. Tim’s lament is above and the two laments to the left were created by members of the congregation.

Harvest & the Sojourner Pastor Corey Laughary 19 “When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over them again. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. 21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not strip it afterward. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. 22 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this.” ~ Deuteronomy 24:19-22 In the Bible, God teaches the Israelites to remember the “sojourners” in their land. What is a sojourner? A person who is traveling through, someone who is not a permanent resident or citizen of a particular place, but still lives there

and has real needs. We might call these folks “resident aliens” today (I highly recommend the book Resident Aliens by Willimon and Hauerwas). I believe followers of Jesus are “resident aliens.” What do I mean by this? We live here on Earth, and in our particular places, but our citizenship is in Heaven (Philippians 3:20). Now, according to our scripture in Deuteronomy 24, the “sojourners” or “resident aliens” will be provided for from the extras of the harvest. For those of us who see ourselves as “sojourners,” what can we learn from this scripture? First, we need to seek justice and have mercy for the true sojourners of

this world. Essential to being a follower of Jesus is having compassion for those in need and the “least of these.” Secondly, and my bigger point, is that the harvest is only secondarily about us “sojourners.” The harvest is for those who need the harvest. That makes sense, right? But what am I saying spiritually for us Christians? I am saying that God will provide for us, His followers, as we work in the plentiful harvest (Matthew 9:37) to restore lost souls to relationship with their Father. Jesus says that there is a plentiful harvest out there, a harvest of people who are broken, hurting and far from God. This harvest is filled with people who see themselves as permanent citizens of Earth, people who believe there is no eternal life or grand plan. These folks are critical to making the economies of the world run, and in so doing their hard work produces all kinds of rewards and income. We, as Christians are part of these economies, and we need them too. But we don’t view worldly wealth as the real “harvest” or the point of life. We use whatever resources we can get, whatever falls from the powerful economies and through people’s bank accounts and into our coffers, as a means to fuel our movement to participate in the true harvest. The true harvest is rescuing people from a meaningless life with no good eternal purpose or destiny, into a soul fulfilling, joy-filled, hope overflowing, loving relationship with God. We are workers sent from God to work for the harvest that matters. In the meantime we are committed to using well whatever resources fall our way to take care of our basic needs and leverage all we can to build bridges that bring people closer to Jesus and His eternal plan for their life.
