Daring to Live On Purpose! An Evening for Women with Author Rochelle Frazier

Rochelle’s story of audacious faith, her infectious love of the Word of God, and her southern storytelling charm will breathe new life into your spiritual journey. A mom of three (including twin boys), blogger, author of He Gave Me Pearls and the children’s book series, “The Sweeteas,” Rochelle has allowed her personal story of brokenness and desperation to be transformed into a source of inspiration and hope through Christ. Hailing from Mississippi, Rochelle has been used by God across the country to unveil for women their calling to seek God passionately, love him deeply and follow him fearlessly.

This is gold!Dear Frazer Family,

You are holding gold! This little booklet can change your life! How can I say that with con-fidence? First, be-cause I know that Jesus is the source of life, the fountain of hope, peace, joy, and love—and the

way we connect to Jesus is by connecting to one another in a body of faith, sharing life together in groups like the ones listed in this magazine.

Second, I know how transforming word-cen-tered discipleship groups can be because my own life contineus to change as I share life in small groups, and I have talked to so many of you whose lives have been changed. I wish I could sit down with each one of you and tell you all the amazing stories I hear of how God is recreating the lives of those who make the effort to get “connected” to a group at Frazer. (We will be sharing just a few of those stories in our next issue of Following Jesus magazine, so be on the lookout for that coming soon.)

That’s why I’m so excited that, coming this fall, we will be expanding with even more ways to connect in even more places—not only here in the Frazer building, but out in the community, through Small Groups meeting in the homes of our members. Our pastors have a vision for this to impact our city for Christ, but we need lots of volunteers to step up and be willing to be used by God to make it happen. Check out pages 12-13 for more information about this exciting new initiative.

Even in the summer season when we relax from many of our regular schedules, you’ll still find plenty of opportunities here at Fraz-er in this issue of Connections. If you’re brand new to Frazer, good places to begin would be our First Steps and Places to Start (p. 5-6).

Be sure to check out the many fun summer activities we have planned for children (p. 18) students (p. 19), and college-age (p. 15), as well as special events for women (p. 14) and for married couples (p. 5), plus a day of prayer for everyone (p. 5).

It’s going to be a golden summer as we seek the Lord together!

We’ve got a BIG vision for SMALL groups, but we need your help! You’ve heard a lot this year from Frazer’s pastors about Small Groups, and you’ll be hearing even more coming in September, 2013. That’s because we’re looking to launch 100 new adult small groups all across our city to transform our city for Christ.

Small Groups bring 6-12 adults (singles or couples) together in some-one’s living room for an hour or so each week to discuss the Bible, pray for one another, and work together in mission.

What we’re finding is that, while Bible studies that meet at the church are great, groups that meet in homes report closer relationships and more spiritual growth together.

Which is where you come in. We’re asking God to lead 50 or more new volunteers (singles and married couples) to step up this summer to host a group in your home in the fall. Small Group Leaders don’t have to be Bible scholars or skilled teachers; training and curriculum will be provided, and sessions are discussion-driven rather than lec-ture-based.

You only need to have a love for people, a desire to grow spiritually, and a willingness to open your home and be used by God. The initial commitment is only for one semester (Sept. through early December).

To volunteer or explore more information, contact Sandy in the Discipleship office at 495.6391 or [email protected]. Host Training Dates: 6 p.m. June 26 or 6 p.m. August 14.

Online Bibles & AppsSeveral free web sites allow you to read, search,

and study the Bible online. We recommend

www.biblegateway.org or www.youversion.com.

Free Bible Apps are also available for mobile

devices including smart phones, iPads, etc. We

recommend the Holy Bible App from Youversion.

it not only allows you to read several different

translations, you can also track your progress

in a Bible reading plan, and make notes for

yourself or share them with others.

of course, for many people the best “app” is still

a printed Bible, notebook and pen. Whatever

your method, remember: the question is not

how you are getting into the Bible, but how the

Bible is getting into you.

ChronologiCal one year planThis plan will take you through the whole Bible in one year, in the order in which scholars

believe the events happened. For example, many of the Psalms were written by david, so those chapters are interspersed into the historical accounts of david found in 1 & 2 Samuel.

e100 bible reading planThis plan will take you through some of the most “essential” Bible passages in 100 days (or less

if you do more than one per day) to give you a broad overview of what God is doing in the scriptures. You can also find this plan online at youversion.com.

What version should I read?the bible was written in hebrew, Aramaic

and Greek, so it must be translated into

english. one way to do this is “literal,” or

word-for-word translation; another way

is “paraphrase,” or thought-for-thought.

Most translations fall somewhere in-be-

tween.

Versions that try to combine the best of

both paraphrase and literal translation

include the New international Version

(NiV) and New living translation (Nlt).

paraphrase versions may be easier to understand or may capture more of the emotion of the biblical writer. this makes them good for devotional use and for beginners. examples are the Contemporary english Version (CeV) and the Message (MSG).

More literal translations, on the other hand, may be more accurate and precise, making them good for in-depth study and more experienced readers. examples are the New revised Standard Version (NrSV) and the New American Standard Version (NASb).

What about the old king James Version? it is a beautiful work of art, although english

has changed so much since 1611 that

most readers find it almost as difficult

as a foreign language. the New king

James Version (NkJV) is an attempt to

modernize it that is considered almost

as literal as the NrSV and NASb.

remember that, whatever version you

use, translation is only one part of under-

standing the bible. the more important

part is giving full attention to what you

read, and being open to allow the holy

Spirit to teach you not only what the

bible says, but what he wants you to

do about it.
